First purchase an IDE/ATA disk drive of your choice. I would advise you to stay away from Maxtor, but I have used Western Digital and Seagate equally well. The larger Hitachi drives use more than 3 platters which create more rotational heat, but are very good drives as well. I mentioned that the Seagate drives cost a little more but give you a 5by John Foley - Café LA Re: my next harddrive ( next week) - 18 years agoLaCie seems to like to use Maxtor drives inside their enclosures and they have a very bad reputation lately. I like to build my own Firewire devices since you can pick the enclosure and when purchasing an internal IDE/ATA disk drive you will get the full three year (or 5 year for Seagate) warranty instead of the reselers one year warranty. If you are handy with installing hardware, check out wwby John Foley - Café LA Re: will sony dvd/cd burner work? - 18 years agoYou can find the latest Pioneer A09 internal mechanism for under $80.00 these days. Tiger supports it natively and it burns dual layer DVD discs. I use my A09 as an external Firewire device so that it can be moved around between computers. THat Sony unit might work as an internal replacement for your current DVD -ROM reader or whatever is in there.by John Foley - Café LA Re: erasing everything - 18 years agoall it's crap? What is: all it's crap? To erase your disk, load the Panther installation disk and hold down the "C" key as you restart and it should boot up into the installer where you can open Disk Utility and choose Erase tab. It will wipe out the entire contents of your boot disk before loading. Make sure you have the lasts 10.x(9 or 8) combo updater and Qt 6.5.1 installer availaby John Foley - Café LA Re: iMove Vs Final Cut - 18 years agoThe last time I looked, iMovie could only do DV or HDV with iMovie HD. iMovie has a lot of quteze effects built in but they can not be edited once outside iMovie That is quite limiting except when you want to cut a simple movie in DV or HDV and want to finish edit it later in FCP as a Quicktime file. I wouldn't even use it for HDV because the Apple Intermediate codec is not as good as the Nativby John Foley - Café LA Re: Anybody Else Get This in the Mail? - 18 years agoGarsh! Jethro!! I did not know that this thing was so fun and easy! Have I been do'in it wrong all these years????? Can I edit parfessional video for 4 hours a day and eard those big bux?? HAR-Har-har!by John Foley - Café LA Re: sleeping disorder - 18 years agoThe sleep function of MacOS X is dubious at best. Sleep was designed for Powerbooks to conserve battery life. but some idiot thought that it would work well on non-powerbooks. Well, it has caused mucho troubles for people leaving their computers on and letting them nod off. This and other forums are repleat with user woes after waking up a sleeping MAC. Don't allow you system to sleep if you keby John Foley - Café LA Re: MPEG4 Audio Files in FCP HD - 18 years agoNope- AC3 is not a current audio format for FCP. You are not allowed to use iTunes music in video production anyway.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Kona 2 Vs. BM Decklink - 18 years ago"DV to HDV and I need some advice. I would like to know which card will produce the best results" As mentioned but not prominently, you do NOT need an HD card for HDV. HDV is Firewire about the same speeds as DV. The advantage of any card with proper outputs is being able to hook it up to a production monitor which can be done from a deck to the monitor.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Buying a mac and FC Studio - 18 years agoEnd of the Quicksilver 2002 lifespan? Are you kidding! My Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz system is perking along just fine with Studio and a ton of other applications. Sure I will get a G5 or whatever when they hit 3.0 GHz (that is the promise I made to myself) but in the meantime, what a deal!by John Foley - Café LA Re: iMac G5 1.8 GHz and G5 2 GHz for FCP5/MOTION/LIVETYPE - 18 years agoI don't disagree with anything said here except that I believe the latest iMAC 2.0 GHz video card WILL run Motion. That said, the iMAC is not a system up to professional use for video editing and DVD authoring. The iMAC is just not expandable enough to qualify as the best solution. You can make it work, but at a cost.by John Foley - Café LA FCP Studio Tutorials DVD - 18 years agoI loaded the Tutorial DVD in a set top player and watched the first tutorial - Final Cut Pro 5 and I have to say it is very good as a starting point for learning most all the features of the tool. It is definitely not the Dance tutorial of yesteryear.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Disappearance of a Hard drive Icon - 18 years agoPossibly a hard drive failure - OUCH! Open Utilities>Disk Utilities and check if you can "see" the drive listed. If not, then it is toast and has either lost power or some sort of connection to the motherboard. Make sure the data cable didn't come loose. If the drive shows up in the Disk Utilities, you may be able to ressurect it with DiskWarior.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Way OT - 18 years agoJust plain Hilarious! Add a little Star Wars music and Sapphire plugins and you have - Emperor Juniorby John Foley - Café LA Re: many crashes in new FCP studio - 18 years agoIt's not unthinkable that there could be a problem with the Apple RAM. RAM is the most obvious cause of crashes, especially operating system lockups (freezes) Other that that, I would start fresh with an erased drive and load Tiger back onto it. Run Repair Disk Permissions after installing the 10.4.1 update. Then install ONLY the Apple FCP Studio apps. Leave everything else off the system, incby John Foley - Café LA Re: Old and Retro - 18 years agoI am not too sure that you are really talking about color -saturation-luninance as such with these older classic films, but rather the locations and the film stock used to shoot. Film emulsions have changed greatly since those films were shoot in the 60's. That is PanaVisions territory. Trying to emulate or more likely recreate those images is really a lost art. I look at it this way. Music andby John Foley - Café LA Re: Compressing to Internet from FCP - 18 years agoFlip4Mac is a plugin and a standalone encoder for WMP. Sorenson Squeeze needs the plugin to encode WMP from 4.1. Flip4Mac is not included in FCP 5 or any other application for that matter. Compression Master is also another encoder that does WMP. (sounds close to WiMP doesn't it?)by John Foley - Café LA Re: New g5 - 18 years agoThey have exceptionally good prices as of the last time I visited their web site. I purchased a software upgrade recently from them and it all went well.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Time Code Math... - 18 years agoWhoa - there big fella! Film is usually shoot at 24fps and telecined to video at 29.97 or 30fps, depending on the pull down rate used during the telecine. The real difference between 29.97 and 30 fps is the way timecode is counted from start. 29.97 drops a frame count at the end of each minute and the beginning of the next minute except at each 10 minute interval. 30 fps is non drop frame of cby John Foley - Café LA Re: Final Cut 5 wont boot - 18 years agoUnless the project you opened first corrupted the preferences for FCP 5, I would ask if you have done the Repair Disk Permissions after loading Tiger and after loading FCP 5 or the Studio as the case may be?by John Foley - Café LA Re: Storage Input - 18 years agoJoe, Do you mean "traveling the system" as in a Powerbook that needs Firewire portablity or a boxed up G5 tower? Since I doubt you'd be able to do HD on a Powerbook, look at a Serial ATA RAID for an internal disk system that is currently over 1.6 TB. Go to www.transintl.com and look at the SwiftData 200 package. With 4 - 400GB SATA drives inside your G5 Tower that is right at 1.5 TBby John Foley - Café LA Re: Weird pixelation - 18 years agoCould be as simple as dirty heads on the record device.by John Foley - Café LA Re: To Linear or Not to linear that is the question - 18 years agoI love how easy it is to get off track when people throw in the own experiences instead of sticking to the question. Linear Editing - That is using at minumum, two tape decks. One deck has the Master tape and the other one the assemble/edit tape. In the later days of Linear - It was much easier than in the early days IE:60-70's to play the Master tape with Timecode and make decisions what pieby John Foley - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoMike, You are thinking that you can know a little of every facet of film/video and get by, but that would probably be a mistaken path to take. In life, you can be informed about many things but only really good at one or two things. I would suggest you find out WHAT you want to be and focus on that first. Once there, you will earn what other pieces of information you need to know. It really isby John Foley - Café LA Re: thinking out loud 'feature request' - 18 years agoPerhaps it is not apparent, but on a computer based NLE system, EVERY EDIT is a 3 point edit. Dragging a file from the browser to the timeline is a 3 point edit. Moving a clip from one point on a track to another point on the same track is a 3 point edit. That mathematical calculation performed by the computer takes a clip with two points (IN/Out) and places it at a third point - where ever itby John Foley - Café LA Re: High Def Cameras/With FCP5 - 18 years agoYour choices for HI Def are one of three. Either HDV, DVCPRO100-HD or uncompressed HD. BIG difference in prices and hardware requirements. Are you aware of the differences between those three?by John Foley - Café LA Re: thinking out loud 'feature request' - 18 years agoI know that this is really early to request , but how about making whatever window the mouse rolls over - active. Since there is no - frontmost window in FCP, it is sometimes hard to remember which window is really active. I would love, I think; to be able to roll the mouse for the Viewer over the Timeline and have it become the active window.by John Foley - Café LA Re: FCP5 Multicam Edit Question - 18 years agoWhen the multiple clips are loaded into the Viewer, you can Control-Click on the individual clips and scrub (roll edit) through the clip. There is a lot to learn about the capabilities of Multi-Cam editing. Probably the most to learn is how to propely orchestrate using the timecode from multiple cameras shooting the same sequence.by John Foley - Café LA |
