What I like about this DVD based training it that they touch in not just the tool (FCP) but identify every facet of the technology in the process. There areby John Foley - Café LA Re: Building a mac editing system - 18 years ago""Also, what is the verdicct on FCP Studio so far?"" Well, since I only got it installed today but did a presentation tonight to our NAProViG group on HDV and Multi-cam, I'd say it is worth the effort. If you do any more than one camera shooting of a subject, then Multicam is a BIG timesaver. HDV looks great if you have the equipment. We had to rent a HIDef projector with 50by John Foley - Café LA Re: NLE System requirement's - 18 years agoStart by specifing the formats of video that you will be using. SD? Different capture cards for different formats. Different formats require different disk systems.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Multi-cam Editing - 18 years ago""is it as simple as lining them up in the timeline and saying, "show me these 16"?"" No not quite - Mulit-Cam is a way to selet the appropriate clips in the browser and tell it to make a multiclip which shows up in the timeline as one track. Then the Viewer turns into a picture in picture with all those selected clips in seperate boxes. You then play the multicliby John Foley - Café LA Re: VRAM on PowerBook and FCP - 18 years agoVideo RAM does, of course have some effect on how good the GUI gets redrawn, but FCP is no where as dependant on GPU power as is Motion, for instance. Additionally, I didn't know that you could upgrade the video card in a PowerBook???by John Foley - Café LA Re: update osx for fcp 3.04 - 18 years agoIt is my considered opinion that Sandro is correct about 10.2.8 causing problems. I have been running 10.2 on an old G3 Beige desktop and at the point where 10.2.8 was available, I installed it. NOTHING BUT TROUBLE! I finally reinstalled 10.2.6 and that is what has worked. All that to say that you'd be better off to go to 10.3 than to stay with 10.2.6, in my opinion.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Help fcp 5 Drop Frames - 18 years agoMulti-Clips are multiple streams of video. I am assuming this DV content and even one SATA drive should be able to handle 6-7 DV streams, but perhaps not the G-Raid??? Anyhow, dropped frames are always about disk throuput.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Compressor 2 acting crazy ! - 18 years agoHere is a link to a massive MPEG-2 encoder shootout and their conclusion about Compressor 1 was: One might assume from the misinformed chatter around that Compressor cannot compete with the more sophisticated (and pricier) products in this shootout. The blind test, however, demonstrated the contrary. In more than one case, a judge confused the Compressor's output with that of the Sonic Solutionsby John Foley - Café LA Re: will this PROCESSOR upgrade work with FCP5 - 18 years agoMotion 1 needs a G4 that was an 867 MHz system and the best video card available (that I am aware of) is the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition (4x AGP)with Panther and QuickTime 6.5 Motion 2 will load on the same minimal system but needs Tiger and QuickTime 7by John Foley - Café LA Re: will this PROCESSOR upgrade work with FCP5 - 18 years agoMotion won't load on that box even with an upgraded CPU bcause it knows what the original speed of the box was. No one I know of has found a way to fool the installer yet. Don't both with the 9600 ATI card either. The only card for the G4 with a 4x AGP video slot is the ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition with 128 MB VRAM (well that is for using Motion) which you can't anyhow!by John Foley - Café LA New 500 GB drives - 18 years agoSeagate has announced the 500 GB Barracuda 7200 rpm disk drive. The new Barracuda 7200.9 internal disc drive will combine 3Gb/s SATA throughput - double that of first-generation SATA - with 500GB of capacity, 16 Mbytes of cache and Native Command Queuing (NCQ) for even higher performance, and the quietest operation in a desktop PC hard drive. Seagate will also begin offering 3Gb/s SATA across alby John Foley - Café LA Re: Color Correcting software - 18 years ago"But can someone break down for me what some of the differences are besides maybe price." FCP Color Correction is 8 bit and Color Finesse is 32 bit and floating point. The color accuracy is the heart of the matter.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Hey Mike (LAFCPUG news letter) - 18 years ago"there are users that believed there software investments can be upgraded on the same system they spent big bucks on in the future WITHOUT a re-investment in equipment. " I guess if you plan to stay with FCP HD for 5 years you might have a point, but for those of us - mindless robots - who purchase every Apple Pro Video upgrade like children in a candy store, it is pointless. You can aby John Foley - Café LA Re: It's Official - Intel Inside - 18 years agoHers's another interesting look at what might have happened between Jobs and IBM.by John Foley - Café LA Did we drink the koolaid? - 18 years agoAn associate of mine asked this question. Did we drink the koolaid? We Mac users have been a smug bunch for years watching the dog and pony show we call Keynote. Steve and Phil stand there and proclaim how much better a MAC is doing Photoshop..Audio...whatever, using the PowerPC CPU that a PC doing the same operation. We all cheer - HU- RAH! Now the new Steve comes to a few developers and proudby John Foley - Café LA Re: It's Official - Intel Inside - 18 years ago"is this a lot different from the move from OS9 to OSX?" I think it will be more like the move from 68000 to PowerPC. The actual OS needed to be rewriten and emulation was enabled to run non PowerPC apps on the PowerPC hardware. The move from RISC (IBM) to CISC (Intel) is no minor feat. There was talk about some company who has technology for emulating MacOS X PowerPC apps on Windowsby John Foley - Café LA Re: FC 5 freeze on start up - 18 years agoDid you Repair Disk Permissions after loading the software? Try it!by John Foley - Café LA Re: G5 Hardware Install - 18 years agoIf the 2.0(G5) is in good working order, (used) I would start by verifying the memory is in good working order and possibly installing more. 4 Gigs is what FCP 5 can access. The Radeon video card you mention is a good one. Install you disk drive(s) and do a fresh install of OS X. If the hardware is in good shape you should be good to go. Depending on what type of video formats you will work witby John Foley - Café LA Re: Best chroma keying software - 18 years agoThe Primatte Keyer is considered to be one of or the very best keyer available.by John Foley - Café LA It's Official - Intel Inside - 18 years agoJust watching the "blogging style" on MacCentral and it is official. No more PowerPC Mac's. Well, maybe until next year when they ship with Intel Inside. Also shown is the "secret" PC version of Tiger 10.4.1 running on an Intel platform. Velly Interesting!by John Foley - Café LA Re: DVD recorder recommendation - 18 years agoIf you want an external DVD burner then any of those would be usable, For replacing an internal unit, there may be some issues. I bought a Pioneer A09 with dual layer capability for either -R or +R and I have heard claims that as of Tiger, that burner is supported. (I used Patchburn) One problem I have encountered is that I still have a bunch of 2x DVD-R blanks that I can't use with this burner.by John Foley - Café LA Re: OT: More fuel on the rumor of IBM - 18 years agoThe tech analysts are betting that it is a "slap in the face" to IBM about their development of the speeds of the Power PC chips. This could open up MAC OS X to run on any PC as well. And don't forget, that the Next operating system that OS X came from was X86 based, so it is a distinct possibility that Jobs feels somehow, a move of this magnitude could benefit Apple in the bigger pictby John Foley - Café LA Re: linking to a PC server - 18 years agoFiles saved to Windows will loose their identity as MAC files. Since MAcOS uses a forked file and Windows does not, upon loading the MAC file onto Windows the intergity of the MAC file will be destroyed. That is why there is a MAC OS X Server. If you are "stuck" in a mostly Windows environment and don't have any choices there are tools like DAVE and other things that might help.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Quick Q about encoding for web - 18 years agoNaw! It doesn't matter to streaming but it does matter to the server and it's size. Using Sorenson Squeeze you can get a very good compression rate for moving images. A 36 megabyte sized file ought to get down to something like 5-6 MB in size using Squeeze.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Another question - 18 years agoSandy, How comfortable with this process are you? It sounds like you are unsure of what the next step is for you. First, I would not recommend to you to install Tiger over the previous OS. This can cause some major problems. I have personally found that it is a good thing to clear off your boot disk when loading a major OS upgrade (like between Panther and Tiger). Then , horrors! You can not duby John Foley - Café LA Re: OT Hardware: Dual processor accelerators for older G4's? - 18 years agoJust keep in mind that when Apple provides minimum system requirements for an application, the installer will check the original system specs to see if it fits. This is especially true for Motion as it will not load if your original system was slower than the minimum even IF you have installed a faster G4 CPU upgrade. There is a smaller benefit to upgrading your G4 that buying a bottom of the lby John Foley - Café LA Re: Alarming download policy from Apple! - 18 years agoI guess we had better save every important download until the next version of it comes around. I recently uninstalled and reinstalled DVD Studio Pro 3 and I went to the Apple site to d/l the latest updater and it took my serial number??? That was around 2-3 months ago.by John Foley - Café LA Re: 1 Terabyte LaCie drive - 18 years agoWith 4 disk drives inside that case, it might just be the rpm of each drive "beating"acoustically against the next one, especially if the drives are touching each other. I would go into the Apple System Profiler and try to find out what manufacturer of disk drives is inside the case. If it is Maxtor - RUN AWAY!by John Foley - Café LA Re: FCS HDV XSAN - 18 years agoWhat? What? What???? Xsan for HDV work? You must understand that most of us do not know what an Emulex 355 switch is as this is not a hardware specific forum. HDV can be captured to a one hard drive solution as long as that hard drive is IDE or SATA. An XSan is great for multiple computer connects but way overkill for HDV! You do mean HDV not HD uncompressed - Yes?by John Foley - Café LA Re: FC won't open. - 18 years agoI would probably then try to reload FCP next. Be sure to run Disk First Aid and use DiskWarrior too, if you have it.by John Foley - Café LA |
