Click HERE to register now best firewire cable? - 16 years agoHey all, So, 12:30am last night I get a desperate tech call from a client - 'I'll pay whatever you want to get my firewire drive working now'. OK I say. Run him over basic steps over the phone, asking him at least 3 times if everything is plugged in correctly - "yes, yes yes" says client. OK, give up, get in car with laptop, drive 20 minutes. Arrive, discover firewire lead fallby jusrus - Café LA Re: Disable Gracenotes in iTunes - 16 years agoI use Little Snitch to monitor incoming and outgoing network connections. Its an excellent piece of software for the paranoid. It's also handy in this situation, as you can choose whether to get track names on the fly JUST before iTunes trys to do it. Also works with MySpace vids and a whole bunch of other things. Good when you are in a hurry (I always am.....) JR.by jusrus - Café LA Re: ProTools question - 16 years agoYep. Can be done a variety of ways. Certainly should be no issues with having them both installed etc etc. Shoot through some more details! JR.by jusrus - Café LA Re: Spring Cleaning -- - 16 years agoAlso means that FCP doesn't load the AU/VST plugs that I can't NOT install with Garageband and a few of my RTAS plugs. I guess the only downer is the 1 minute reboot time when working on a project that requires both FCP and PT, but I'm dealing with that OK so far. I think the improved performance wins out at the end anyway.by jusrus - Café LA Re: Spring Cleaning -- - 16 years agoHi Wayne, Obviously my "Tiger installed on both drives" wasn't clear enough. I'm rebooting for each process, and it works well. Easier to keep the system clean too. J, I've only got an LE 002 rig at home. TDM uses a lot less of the G5s grunt (as you are no doubt aware). You have to manage everything very carefully in 002-land.by jusrus - Café LA Re: Spring Cleaning -- - 16 years agoI've just re-formatted both of the drives in my G5 (250 & 300gb) and backed up all necessary data to external firewire and DVDs. Trying a new workflow with Tiger installed on both drives - audio apps on one and video on the other. Just to try and eke a little more performance out of ProTools and FCP. So far all working well. If you are unhappy with your system's performance, I seriousby jusrus - Café LA Re: Legalities: One on the desktop, one on the laptop? - 16 years agoI'm reading this at 2am on Sunday morning, so that probably makes me the sadest of the lot! The thread, I'm NEVER gonna read that agreement. Interesting though, I never knew that I could have it installed on both my machines at the same time. Thanks for that.by jusrus - Café LA Re: Which Cam to choose? - 16 years agoYup - me too. Excellent observations I think Dan - and well written. Thanks for putting in the effort. Anyone going to argue against his points I wonder? Devil me advocate JR.by jusrus - Café LA Re: More Space Better Quality? - 16 years agoYou can get -R DVD9s (dual layer). I haven't bothered as yet - single layers are doing me just fine. ALL DVD9s (burns or not) have the layer change. You are correct - there are two types - either with both layers on one side, or one on each side. I have a box set that requires the disc to be flipped - can't remember what - but its old. I don't think you get many of those anymore. I haveby jusrus - Café LA Re: OT - mac tablet??? - 16 years agoI still just want my 12 inch powerbook back....PLEASE.by jusrus - Café LA Re: Widescreen Filter Does Not Work on Some of My Clips - 16 years agoI had this randomly happen on 4.5 a year or so ago. I zoomed and cropped and moved on from memory. Mine was a short one. Never found an answer....(looks wistfully off into the distance)....by jusrus - Café LA Re: Replacement DVD R/RW drive for a G5 (abaout 2 years old) - 16 years agoPioneer - DVR-116 or whatever number they are up to now. Internal yes? A little tricky to get in, but as long as your fingers are quite nimble you won't have any problems doing it yourself. I bought one last week - about $60 australian, so probably less if you're stateside.by jusrus - Café LA Re: OT But interesting. 1986 Mac Plus vs 2007 AMD DualCore PC. - 16 years agoUntil 9 months ago I drove a 1965 Ford XP Sedan. The *newest* guitar in my (sadly extensive) collection dates from 1981, the oldest from 1962. We were using a G3 iMac as a media centre in the kitchen until a recent laptop upgrade meant the kitchen got the old G4 ibook (now that IS an improvement). My predominant work computers are both less than 2 years old, and the G5 will be upgraded soon.by jusrus - Café LA Re: intel performance increase - stumbling blocks? - 16 years agoThe only thing I notice about Rosetta apps is they are a lot slower to boot - functionality while open seems fine. I'm a medium to heavy photoshop user, and CS3 is massively better, but CS2 wasn't killing me under Rosetta I have to say. Go for it - you'll be better off in the long run.by jusrus - Café LA Re: I'm a bear! - 16 years ago"What about if an actor hums a current tune in a scene? Is one breaking the copyright law if the tune ends up in the movie?" Is the 10% rule global? I read an article many years ago - 10% difference will get you through. Think K-Tel tapes. Think about a chorus that has 10 notes in its melody - change one and you're OK supposedly. It'll still sound like turps of course.... Mby jusrus - Café LA Re: I'm a bear! - 16 years agoI'm going to ignore the controversy here and stick to the aussie thread... Of course - all our animals kill people. Kangaroos regularly hop over the Harbour Bridge to work, there are more deadly spiders here than people and snakes inhabit all our urban areas like gangsters.... Oh hold on, that's the USA that has gun issues? JR.by jusrus - Café LA Re: I'm a bear! - 16 years agoJust a little sidenote here that in Australia (yes, I know, jokes will be forthcoming) its actually illegal to put songs from CDs you own onto your iPod. I believe while I was overseas last year they changed the copyright laws somewhat, mainly reharding television recording, but left the music laws in place? Can Jude/Nick/J Corbett confirm/deny? JR.by jusrus - Café LA Re: OT : Nice broadband speed test - 16 years agoIndeed strange Johan, but my real world experiences would suggest that Australia isn't that far behind in real terms if you're on a high quality ADSL2+ connection.by jusrus - Café LA Re: OT : Nice broadband speed test - 16 years agoJohan, No arguments there. I've just moved to Optus from Netspace. From everything I've read I'm on the fastest internet plan going in Australia, so I better like it here, cause there's no going any faster. It would seem that what I've got is decent? $60 a month when you bundle your phone is fine.....by jusrus - Café LA Re: Cheap analog capture? - 16 years agoI have to do SOME editing I believe - I'll need to find out more. I guess you're probably right - I just would have preferred to use the macs for better compression rates, fancy menus etc. I may still do via DV passthrough - get some old broken cameras off eBay! Here we go again....by jusrus - Café LA Cheap analog capture? - 16 years agoHi guys, As many of you know, I have a variety of machines - G4 & G5 towers, G3 iMac, G4iBook and a couple of MacBookPros at my disposal. I want to digitise about 300 hours of VHS tape. I'm after the cheapest most effective solution to do this. Obviously I could do the dv pass through thing, but if possible I'd prefer interal cards for the G4 & G5, and USB2 devices for the laptopsby jusrus - Café LA Re: OT : Nice broadband speed test - 16 years agoHmm indeed interesting. Are you with Optus? Latency seems a bit high for mine, and surely you aren't 'about' (I presume that's what the symbol means?) 50 miles from your exchange?!?! You're in Perth, not Albany right? It was interesting when we went around the world last year. The best speeds I got anywhere was actually at my parents house, halfway between Paris and Geneva in the south ofby jusrus - Café LA Re: OT : Nice broadband speed test - 16 years agoI'm surprised too - I've just moved to Optus ADSL2+, which I understand to be the fastest possible domestic internet connection available in Australia - not bad. 88% global 82% country Though I did do this test on a Saturday morning - would that make a difference? And yes, I agree its within the scope of this forum - upload speed was why I moved ISPs. I'm surprised Australia is sby jusrus - Café LA Re: FCP 6 manuals are now online for download at Apple - 16 years ago18th May - still 13 days before they break the promise - I guarantee someone has a copy before then. Should I mention the war? Or the fact Aussies are now the best punt kickers in American football?by jusrus - Café LA Re: FCP 6 manuals are now online for download at Apple - 16 years agoI own 2 copies It's a pot not a pint where I come from. The days of Australia being second class citizens with these things finally seem to be coming to an end - bought 2 new version MacBooks for clients today. So na na na na naaaaaa...... I didn't know Johan was on the right side of the world also... I'm NOT upgrading to 6 in a hurry anyway - far too much going at the moment...by jusrus - Café LA Re: P2 long way roung via Windows - 16 years agoOK - thanks very much for your imput. The Panasonic manual I read yesterday needs updating then - specifically stated that I couldn't connect straight to the MBP via FireWire. I had already watched your tute Shane - thanks. John, does it specificaly have to be 120gig? Can the HVX bus power a 2.5inch firewire drive? Think the MBP is the safer option. I presume that the transfer fromby jusrus - Café LA Re: Is this firewire drive too slow? - 16 years agoHi Harry, With the drive plugged in, go to Apple Menu/About This Computer/More Information.... See if it comes up under Firewire or USB tabs. My bet is it won't be oxford chipset (is Proline or something the dodgy one?), and I reckon wayne is right that it might be 5400. Combination of bad case and bad drive = lots of baddness....by jusrus - Café LA P2 long way roung via Windows - 16 years agoHey guys, So I've read a bit now, and I'm going to hire a HVX200 for the weekend - I expect after all the praise on this board to be blown away - we will see... Anyway, now my question. The hire place does not supply a card reader, which I believe I need to import via OSX. Should this actually come standard with the camera? Anyway, I've been led to believe I can output via firewire undby jusrus - Café LA |
