It looks like I'm going to have to find a good training manual and get my hands dirty.by MikeDerk - Motion Re: What's the purpose of Motion? - 16 years agoThank you. I've been having trouble getting an answer to this (and similar questions about other, mostly Adobe, programs). I have been able to find many AE tutorials on line, and in podcasts, but they seem to be lacking for motion. Even on this forum when I asked how to do something, I was referred to AE. (I was drawing a box on the screen. I think someone just asked a similar question about aby MikeDerk - Motion What's the purpose of Motion? - 16 years agoSeriously, I have motion, I see a lot of talk of particles, but I don't get what people use it for. Can someone point me to a video (maybe on YouTube? maybe on your site?) that shows me what Motion can do when you pull out all the stops? Thanks. I'm just sort-of confused about why this was lauded when it first came out, and every time I see a promo for the NFL I think "Is that Motioby MikeDerk - Motion Re: 3-point edit - 16 years agoOkay, you've all verified what I thought. I was hoping there was a way around this. But, overall, it's not too bad. Thanks.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: OT After Effects - 16 years agoCreative Cow also has AE podcasts that I have found to be very helpful. But I agree with Wayne: it's a tough place to navigate.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Image formats in final cut pro - 16 years agoI use tiffs. For some reason I have the easiest time with tiffs if I'm using masks/mattes. I have no reason for this; I just stumbled on what worked for me.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: FCP Studio 2 vs. Adobe Premiere CS3 - 16 years agoWayne, That was before my time, so I don't even know what you're talking about! I did just post a "three-point edit" question, though, coincidentally. From what I remember, Premiere did what seemed reasonable (the in and out points were the "outside" of both frames) and not what FCP does (the in and out points are the front end of both frames.) Am I to understandby MikeDerk - Café LA 3-point edit - 16 years agoI was using the three-point edit a lot over the weekend, and I was constantly annoyed by one aspect of it. I was setting the in and out points in the sequence, and then just setting the in or out point on the footage I wanted to add to the sequence. (I was matching audio from one camera to picture from another camera.) I would use the already-established in and out points for the video,by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: FCP Studio 2 vs. Adobe Premiere CS3 - 16 years agoWow. Great responses, thanks. Wayne, I'm curious what differences you see -- I saw only negligible differences in '99, but then again, I barely knew what a three-point edit was. I rarely share my un-finished project files with other people, but when I do, it's good to remember that other people are probably going to have only FCP. (At least in my world.) Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA FCP Studio 2 vs. Adobe Premiere CS3 - 16 years agoI started editing for the first time ten years ago on Premiere. I knew nothing else and loved the program until my computer started crashing endlessly. Switched to a mac, switched to FCP. Love FCP. I wasn't a good enough editor to recognize any major differences. (I've never even touched an Avid.) With CS3 coming out, I'll likely get AE (for the first time) and one of the options has itby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: .avi + NTSC 29.97 audio - 16 years agoKoz, You are right. The files are QT, but they are still 30fps. (They were taken on a still camera.) Select the clip and press APPLE-9 to check what settings were used to capture that clip.<< Awesome shortcut. Thanks. Now I need to wonder why it would have changed... I've only ever captured video from the same camera ever since whenever. Mind if I start saying "digital re-encoding" instead of captby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: .avi + NTSC 29.97 audio - 16 years agoUnless I'm mistaken, .avi files are 30 frames per second, and the Canon XL-1 files are 29.98 fps. I'll primarily be using the .avi files, and in the end, everything is going to be output to mp4 and wmv.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: subtle but annoying noises - 16 years agoI'll add another question to this (assuming for now the answer is in the same spot). My mic (fine a week ago) turned to crap yesterday and I have a terrible hum. I haven't checked to see if it's consistant; I think it goes from bad to worse and back to bad as the shoot went on. I'd love to minimize those. I think I listed before that I have FCSP2, but I just have Studio Pro, so no "by MikeDerk - Café LA Video suddenly has to render - 16 years agoI uploaded some video (using the Capture Now technique; it was just to check my cable) but I noticed that the video needed to be rendered. I've never seen this before. I'm worried that my program has been corrupted somehow. Although, in one of the captures (but not both), I was warned about timecode breaks. I'll admit that is what I thought caused the need to render, which is why I uploadeby MikeDerk - Café LA .avi + NTSC 29.97 audio - 16 years agoSo, without going into the details as to why, here's my situation. I have my video on in .avi form, and my audio at 29.97 shot with a Canon XL-1. I'm going to be uploading it all shortly, but was looking for suggestions on my workflow. My video isn't going to have timecode, or at least it's not going to have timecode that resembles the timecode on the audio. Sadly, I don't have After Effects, and was hoping to avoid the "mask method," which was all I've been able to think of up to this point.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: OT: Can anyone out there make me feel better about owning a Mac? - 17 years agoMy fan revved up like crazy, but it only took one phone call to fix. (I had to reboot the computer holding down two keys -- maybe r & f -- and that was that.) I second the Disk Warrior purchase, and the Archive and Reinstall. The second one is a pain, but it solved a lot of problems for me a couple of times. As for the DVDSP, I have found that using Compressor first and then importingby MikeDerk - Café LA "chalkboard" effect - 17 years agoIs there a simple way to do the "drawing on a chalkboard" effect? They use this a lot in sports -- to circle players or draw arrows to show where a play is going to go, etc. I have the suite and Photoshop, and have access to Shake, if any of those programs are helpful. Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Noobie question: can I delete a file? - 17 years agoHi Nick, I?m not so much an oldie, but someone who cycles through phases of writing, shooting and editing, so I?m always a noobie when I get back to editing. And since every problem is visible in the editing room, I always feel like I have training wheels on and that I?d better get it right. There is no next step. Your advice was terrific, and terrifically detailed. Thanks. I think I managby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: How to activate subtitles through a menu. - 17 years agoI have a follow up question. I have a disk with two films. One of them is subtitled, the other is not. I would love to have radio buttons on the main menu to a) indicate which film is subtitled (I'd put them near the title) b) allow the user to activate/deactivate subtitles without using a submenu or the button on their remote. Is this possible? Thank you, Mikeby MikeDerk - DVD Studio Pro Re: Way OT: organizing files - 17 years agoI'll do that search, and I'll start using underscores. Two more good pieces of advice. It's amazing how files proliferate, and suddenly, ouch.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Way OT: organizing files - 17 years agoGiven how much I need help with this, I hope it is soon too. And I need help with it across the board -- my script documents are all a mess. My closet is a mess. My kitchen...by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Way OT: organizing files - 17 years agoThanks, I just needed the voice of experience to guide me. This is getting even further OT, so feel free to ignore it: is the Mac feature of "smart folders" designed to do this for us? As in, create a smart folder with the key word "cover" and voila, all the covers are there? (I've never looked into it, but I might soon.) As I said, way OT, so you can ignore the questionby MikeDerk - Café LA Noobie question: can I delete a file? - 17 years agoOkay, clearly (based on my other post) you can see that I am cleaning up a messy disk. So, here's my question: I shot a short on film, had it telecinied, and now have it in .mov form on my computer. Parts of it were letterboxed, and others were not, so I went in and letterboxed the scenes that needed it. That FCP file references the original, non-letterboxed file. I have several files and am looking for the best way to organize them. Example: I have two short films, the images that go along with them, and various formats (raw footage, cuts for DVD output, iPod files, etc.). I have various builds for DVDs that are one film or both films. Uncompressed 8 or 10-bit > ? the frame rate of the video How can I do these things? This isn't anything professional, so generational loss isn't crushing, but I want it minimized anyway. So, nobody is the bearer of bad news. I will do the above steps, and if the results are amazing or terrible, I'll let everyone know. Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA editing .m4v - 17 years agoA friend of mine e-mailed a .m4v (or maybe mp4) video to me and I would like to go in and tweak it. When I render it, it stays small, and I'm worried that when I revert it back to .m4v it will be doubly-small. What's the best way to take an .m4v file, open it, edit it, and put it back into an e-mailable form while not schrunching the image (or hopefully losing too much resolution.) Tby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Compressor 2 Batch Monitor - 17 years agoI have had this exact problem. Not the most elegant solution, but it went away when I reinstalled the entire FCP Suite. Neither trashing preferences nor using the program with a different user name had any effect. When you have the time, reinstall.by MikeDerk - DVD Studio Pro |
