Not registered? Click HERE to register now machine is breathing heavily - 16 years agoSince I got my computer in January, it's been offline, and therefore had no updates. Recently, it started to "breathe heavily" -- the fan would turn on and off very quickly twice. This would happen occassionally. Today, I lugged it into the house for an update (including PowerPC) and now it's huffing all the time. Has anyone else experienced this? They?re still on the hard-drive. These errors are exactly WHY I?m doing this now, to see the problems. The same clips are off-line in both the old and the new file, btw. So, first off, I'm done with the project and have learned my lesson about file management and Capture Now. I'm only trying to suck every lesson I can out of my blunder so next time I'm way better off. The way I used Media Manager was... (The project's already 6 weeks past deadline...)by MikeDerk - Café LA Media Manager - 16 years agoI have a media manager question. (Clearly, I have just finished up a project.) I used media manager to clear out a bunch of files I don't need, yet it retained a shocking number of files that I don't use in any sequence. Why did it do this? I'll admit this up top as a lesson learned: I used quite a bit of Capture Now to capture my data -- and then renamed it in FCP. Now, I can't even manually dby MikeDerk - Café LA Formatting after project - 16 years agoI've heard mention of people reformatting their external drives after they finish a project. Is this just a good way to clean the disk, or does it also prolong the life of the drive? Basically, is it a good idea? Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Warning? - 16 years agoThanks Nick, this is the answer I needed. I was tired and worried that I was overlooking white off-line files and that redering had hidden other issues. Good news is that there wasn't a problem, but this will be handy in the future. Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Warning? - 16 years agoYeah, that explains it. I wish the warning would come when the render or export happened -- that's when it REALLY matters.by MikeDerk - Café LA Warning? - 16 years agoSay I put together a sequence and include Clip A in the sequence, and then for some reason, Clip A gets deleted or renamed or lost. When I open FCP it will let me know that some media is off-line, but let's say I already know this. (But I don't know Clip A is offline.) Will FCP ever tell me again? When I go to render or export the file, will it say, "ho there buddy, you're asking to use a cby MikeDerk - Café LA highlight changes - 16 years agoI'm going through and editing something and wanted to mark the changes I was making. It takes about two weeks for changes to show up.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: letterbox filter? - 16 years agoYou can always apply the built-in screen, and then match the one you make to that to get the size right. I think going from full frame to 16:9 in Photoshop is... 853x480 (full frame) 853x405 (with letterbox) I'm not 100% sure, and you'll have to do the math, but I think that's right.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Is it possible to glue back the sound track once it's razored to smithereens? - 16 years agoI've been having a little trouble following your project, so I'm going to throw this out as a possible solution. IF your pieces are not continuous (meaning you had a clip ABC, and now you have AC, because you cut out B) then you can export the sound and reimport it as one clip. Use the green buttons on the left to "turn off" the video if you only want to export the sound. Also, if youby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Sound editing help needed on feature film - simple tricks of the trade. - 16 years agoYou can easily make a loop of ambient sound: just find the 12 frames you want, create a new track for them, and paste them endless times. (A process you can speed up by pasting 4 times, copying the new "4x12", and pasting that several times, recopying it... etc. It'll grow exponentially.) But, just so you know, 12 repeated frames will probably be picked up by the human ear as a rhythm.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: OT: ...an awesome performance... - 16 years agoI googled Chris and found another juggler repeating the same exact routine with two more balls (and an obvious grudge). This guy then also juggles 10 balls!! Anyway, they were both incredible. I don't think I've ever seen so much juggling without a drop.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: The Art of Editing - 16 years agoI've never heard of cutting without the audio, even though I've watched movies in languages I don't know to see if I can figure out what's going on -- sort-of the same yet opposite thing. I gotta try that too. I don't play an instrument, but I would say that I developed my sense of rhythm by learning to tell jokes. They're little builds and climaxes, just like a scene. Want to see if your rhythmby MikeDerk - Café LA iPod/iSquint - 16 years agoI recently downloaded iSquint (1.3.1) and am using it to convert projects for a video iPod. I've noticed that they get slightly more red/amber in the compression. Has anyone else noticed this (in any compression program)? If so, do you have the right fix? It'll save me the trouble of trial-and-error. Make sure that the line that connects the Menu icon to the Movie icon has arrows on both ends of it. If it does not, delete it. Then, add it back on by dragging it from the video folder (or whereever you keep it). Hope that helps.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Importing images with alpha channels - 17 years agoI have a more detailed description of the issue: In Photoshop, it is easy to use a vector mask to hide (or show) things. In the layers tab, this mask appears as a small thumbnail, and in the Channels tab this appears with the name "mask" and is italicized. (It is not an Alpha Channel, which is a mistake I was making.) When trying to reproduce the same image in FCP, the vector mask neeby MikeDerk - Café LA Importing images with alpha channels - 17 years agoI'm having trouble importing images with alpha channels. It works if I import a .psd file, but then it comes in as a sequence. If I import just a single image (on which I've made an alpha channel in Photoshop) it never seems to come in. I'm eventually going to build up to a more complicated effect, but for now all I want to do is import a pre-drawn waft of smoke, and then have it rise. I couldby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Using Flash in FCP - 17 years agoIt's important to remember that flash files are not video files. They are built for the internet and run using vectors, not pixels. That said, I had no problem dragging them into FCP 5.0.4 and opening them. (I did have the original .swf files.) They turned out to be half the size of the screen, though -- which was fine for my project. FCP will not play Flash Audio. I left it off so Joe could see the transformations he was making to the clip more easily. But Opt + drag is the way to go, you're right. Thanks for the compliment.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Taming Very Hard Reflections on Leaves - 17 years agoBoy, if you'd asked me how long it would take before someone like you was getting advice from me, I'd've said "um...never." Maybe I do have it, but I didn't realize it came bundled with FCP (I have Studio).by MikeDerk - Café LA Workflow question - 17 years agoI have a possibly complex question: I would like to tweak a video clip to give it a certain look, and right now I can only achieve the look in photoshop. The big question is: how can I export frames, tweak them, and then bring them back in? My idea is to export a targa sequence, adjust each image in photoshop (which will be as easy as applying a premade filter), and then... well, what? Is theby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Taming Very Hard Reflections on Leaves - 17 years agoYou can also adjust the luma to make a travelling matte, and then sandwich a layer inbetween with a suitable substitute color. 1. In other words, make a luma key -- this will put holes into your clip where it's very bright. 2. Beneath that, put another image that you would like to see where those holes are. 3. Pray.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Taming Very Hard Reflections on Leaves - 17 years agoI have no idea if this will work, but if you're desperate: 1. Move the clip you want to adjust to the second track. (Assuming it would normally be on the first track.) 2. Desaturate it. 3. Use the brightness/contrast controls to turn everything black except the light on the leaves. Assuming this is superwhite, you should be able to turn everything else black. (In my test clip, I was putting contby MikeDerk - Café LA |
