Can this be done with clips that are off-line? Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Media Manager? - 17 years agoI have a question about deleting media, and saving just the bits I need. When I was just getting used to using MPEG Streamclip, I didn't realize that I could grab just a part of the DVD. So, I have an 18GB file that I use maybe a minute from. When I go into Media Manager, it tells me it can shrink the file from 18G to 17.9G, so I think I'm missing something. Is there a way to extract just the cby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: d'oh, editing out a sound - 17 years agoOh, whoops, I meant STP, not Compressor.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Please settle a debate re: DV comp. - 17 years agoJust to squeeze a detail out of you. Once the DV is 4:1:1 compressed and put into FCP and edited, why does outputting it at 8-bit uncompressed matter? I did a very quick comparison between the same movie output both ways, and 8-bit had fewer artifacts (most visible in the blacks). And thank you for settling the argument my direction. :-)by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: color balance - 17 years agoDon't forget that you're probably focusing on the whole image, whereas a viewer may be only looking at the important details. A curtain in the upper right corner that changes color a tad might not be that important in the overall scheme of things.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: 16:9 in 4:3 sequence - 17 years agoThe widescreen filter doesn't need to be rendered. It's in the "effects" tab in your browser, under "video generators".by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: d'oh, editing out a sound - 17 years agoCompressor has a tool for locating and elimitating electrical hum.by MikeDerk - Café LA Please settle a debate re: DV comp. - 17 years agoYesterday an editor and I were talking about where the 5:1 compression takes place in DV. My answer was "the camera," his was "during the transfer to the computer." So, his claim says that DV tapes have a better picture than we can pull into the computer. (And that repeated copy-to-tape and captures will reduce the quality of an image.) Who's right? And along the lines of coby MikeDerk - Café LA Are QT files lossless? - 17 years agoI got a surprise call that I have to deliver my project on digibeta. I don't have a digibeta, so I have to take my program to somebody who does. (And I have to do this in like an hour.) If I export to QT, are they going to be the highest quality? Or do I need to output to tape? Another option would be to move all of my files to their system and let them do it directly, but I'm on FCP 5 and theyby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Editing and Quality loss - 17 years agoThanks for the full answer. I'll check for the even numbers -- I never knew that mattered so much, but I guess if other numbers force every pixel to get interpolated, it would of course affect quality.by MikeDerk - Café LA Editing and Quality loss - 17 years agoI have a basic question, but an easy answer. I have a short QT movie, DVCPRO codec, 720x480. Due to many reasons, one of the scenes, an establishing shot, has no letterbox. (Most people never notice.) But I'd still like to add one. Here's my question: 1. If I go into FCP, and add a letterbox and reframe the shot by lowering it, and then export to QT, will I lose any quality? (I lower it so theby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: General Editing Question - 17 years agoHmmm...perhaps I wasn't as clear as I thought I was. I pulled the .m2v from a DVD I already have AND I pulled an JPEG A. I have yet to successfully make an mpeg2 version that didn't look terrible. I'll see how the JPEG A looks after I put a letterbox on it, and go from there. But, like I thought, I can't edit the .m2v. The DVCPRO looks fine, not great, and compression (in Compressor, anyway) mby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: General Editing Question - 17 years agoDerek, Sorry for the lack of info in the post -- I'd asked about compression in an earlier thread and 2 weeks ago on the DVDSP forum, and I'd only meant for this to be about the sound. BUT... since you are the first person to respond (and Greg Kozikowski simultaneously in the other thread) I would like your help answering this question: #1 More important question: I finally was able to recoveby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Compression problems QT to DVD - 17 years ago>>You may be trying too hard.<< Oh, man, that's funny. Because listen to what else I did: I went through the entire film (it's 3 minutes) frame by frame and added compression markers all over the place, like 700 of them. Seriously. And you know what, it still sucked. Every frame that I hadn't specifically pegged, sucked. Boy, did that ever hurt. So, advice to everyone... um, no neby MikeDerk - Café LA General Editing Question - 17 years agoThis is part of my struggle today with compressing a QT file (still not resolved.) The QT file has audio at 44.1 MHz. My understanding was that this was specifically for CDs and was inappropriate (if that's the right word) for video. I expected it to come back at 48. Is this something I should complain about? I got it done at a professional video house because I can't handle the big tapes (beby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: I've lost all hope for the "film look" - 17 years agoI just downloaded it. I'm not going to have a chance to play with it for a few days (at least until the compression problems I'm asking about in another thread is dealt with). But I'm excited to try it out. Thanks again, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Compression problems QT to DVD - 17 years agoFollow-up: Using Compressor, I've gone to Best Quality 90 min 4:3 and jacked the Mbps as high as they can go and changed the GOP to 6, IPPPPP. This looked better than the preset values, but no better than using a GOP of 15, IBBP. Also, MactheRipper can't pull it off the DVD I already have. It simply does nothing when I push GO!. MPEG streamclip tells me the the VOB_1 file is only the first 30 sby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: I've lost all hope for the "film look" - 17 years agoMontreal is where my DV film screened and looked kind of mleh. Had I only known... I'm excited to try the trial version, thanks for offering it.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Compression for iPod - 17 years agoThanks Jude, I read the tutorials and get on it. Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: I've lost all hope for the "film look" - 17 years agoI've never seen the magic of Natress. How well does it achieve the film look when DV movies edited in FCP are projected in a theater? I assume that's the goal, but nobody has specifically said that's where their movies are going to be playing. Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Compression problems QT to DVD - 17 years agoHello, I'm having problems compressing a large .mov file. The end result is that on a DVD the frames look terrible. I'm not talking about jagged lines. Imagine the frame is split into 6 horizontal slices -- those six slices are not always in sync, and I can pause and "catch them in the act." The original film was on film, then telecined and eventually converted to a large .mov file (by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: I've done something obvious, but... - 17 years agoWonky does not have an "e". Just doing my part, because I can't answer most of the FCP questions.by MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Compression for iPod - 17 years agoAlso, is it worth up-rezzing (if that's the right word) the letterboxed 4:3 to 16:9 before compressing it since it's going to be so much smaller anyway?by MikeDerk - Café LA Compression for iPod - 17 years agoCan Compressor be used to convert a short movie to the right kind of mpeg-4 for an iPod, and assuming the answer is yes, can someone point me to a place to find the right settings? Both movies are under 5 minutes. Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Way OT: need suggestion for good Mac site - 17 years agoThanks for suggestions on the sites and the printers, guys!by MikeDerk - Café LA Way OT: need suggestion for good Mac site - 17 years agoMy printer has died, and it was never a very good printer to begin with (the scanner NEVER worked). So, I'm going to get a new one. But, I don't want to run into the same problems that I had before, and want a recommendation, but I don't know a good general Mac site to go post questions and read archives. Can anybody recommend one? Thanks, Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Audio issues... - 17 years agoFCP hates compressed audio. Use iTunes to convert the mp3 into an aiff file and use that.by MikeDerk - Café LA Widescreen Matte asking as Mask - 17 years agoIf I have two video tracks and apply a widescreen mask to the top mask (to make 4:3 look 16:9) the matte inevitably works as a mask, and shows the underlying track -- I just want it to be black. I don't want it to expose anything. Is there something that I accidentally toggled on to make this happen, and how do I turn it off? I don't want to have to clean-up the tracks underneath the track I waby MikeDerk - Café LA Re: Copy/Paste from Seq 1 to Seq 2 - 17 years agoI'll try that. Thanks. This is the first use I've ever seen mentioned of those buttons. (I'm sure they do more, and are great once you understand them.) Mikeby MikeDerk - Café LA |
