My work around is to disable all the tracks, and then enable the one i want to work on. Then i can tweak, process, etc at well and then send that soundtrack project back into FCP, and isolate that one track again. There's prob better ways but for me, thats been good enough since im usually only dealing with one mic track.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Export is Blurry! - 14 years agoOK, so of course as im getting these ready for final assembly, Motion starts blurring my export. But only on my replicator! Basically i have a lot of high res stills that i made into a sequence, replicated them all out into a line and panned across, then zoomed in on the main one. Everything worked like a charm but now, all of sudden, when i zoom into the image, it looks like its a draft resolby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: OT- is it me or can we no longer scrub in the finder? - 14 years agoQuickLook is the best, it's become my favorite way of dealing with files, music plays instantly, psd's show up with alpha channels, documents pop up with readable navigable text, its the best. And it's wicked slick for dealing with FCP, i keep a Finder window open on my 2nd monitor, slide up and down through my b-roll, music, pics, etc to find the media i need, then hit spacebar to make it goby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Benefits of using Pro Res as my render codec? - 14 years agoi <3 ProRes, i use it for everything. Alpha channel support would be super nice although i do all my graphics in Motion so i never actually have to export anything outside of FCP but i understand the need for AE and alpha channels in other workflows.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: HDV to SD DVD conversion - 14 years agoDon't use QT Conversion first off, use Compressor. You need to resize your media properly and need to stay in high quality codecs. HDV is crap for text and so is DV. Then your taking this crap files and compressing to MPEG 2 which is even worse and wondering why its soft? This is what ProRes was made for Again, i did a write up on this with a bent on compressing for web but the principles sby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: How to close several opened sequences? - 14 years agoWhat Tim said, closing the Canvas window closes every open sequence you have. It's a beautiful thing...by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Best way to create titles going from HD to SD - 14 years agoYou didn't really clarify what your intended output was other than SD. You were dropping your footage in a SD sequence so i thought perhaps your were trying to offline to tape. If you were just trying to get an SD Master to create a DVD absolutely Compressor is the way to go. Just create a setting that best matches your output(23.98 or 29.97, 16x9, interlaced or progressive, etc) and use ProRby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Best way to create titles going from HD to SD - 14 years agoI say avoid going into an SD sequence all together, go to SD straight from your HD sequence using Compressor and then drop that file in your SD sequence. This way you get the best quality possible and you have both an HD and SD master. So lets say you're going to SD tape on this current project, thats your end destination. But lets say the client likes it so much they decide they have the budgby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Video quality - 14 years agoBefore you spend all this time or money, i'd find out exactly how your film will be shown on "the big screen". Why go to HD if the projector is only SD? Can you give them a Beta master or do they only have DVD playback? You need to find out the theaters capabilities before you fret about the sharpness of your source...by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: YOU TUBE - 14 years agoThat's not true, actually. I have a Virtual Cluster set up on my MBP and it works just fine. All you need for clusters is more than one processor instance and MBPs are Dual Core so there you go. You just need to have enough RAM to make it worth splitting your cores. It's not nearly as much of a bump in processing time as on an Octo but it does help a bit. Although one thing i've noticed oby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: hdv 720p60 codec download? - 14 years agouhmmmm, i hate to say this but he did pay to play already. He already has FCP 6 so i see no reason why he can't share it to a FCP 5 machine? There are plenty of reasons for not upgrading a FCP 5 machine to 6, one little codec shouldn;t stop him. Anyway, i have no idea if this will work but its worth a try: See if swapping the HDV QuickTime component from your MacPro with the one on your G5 wiby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: YOU TUBE - 14 years agoOK, so I actually did a write up about this topic and included my Compressor settings at the bottom of the page. This should help everyone... My point in the article is that it's not a simple process to get HD to look good on the web or a DVD. If you want quality, you have to go through a two step process, Resize for your destination and then change to your delivery codec. However, I did buildby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: scale multiple clips without pasing attributes?? - 14 years agoYou need to scale as a group in order to keep your spatial arrangement correct, nesting or sending to motion to get them all into a layer is the best way to go.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: scale multiple clips without pasing attributes?? - 14 years agoSelect all the clips you want to scale, nest them(opt - C), and then scale the nest. That should work for youby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Hey Guys - Geno Andrews here - quick question about 1920x1080 vs 1888x1062 - 14 years agoTechnically the DVD author is just authoring the DVD with the assets you gave him. So you can either give him the already compressed M2V files or allow him to compress himself. Whichever way you pick depends upon what type of disc you are creating, if he needs the flexibility in file size for what he's creating. If it's a straight linear film, go ahead and compress it yourself with Compressor's sby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Hey Guys - Geno Andrews here - quick question about 1920x1080 vs 1888x1062 - 14 years agoQuicktime Player isnt always the most accurate for finding that sort of data, sometimes its just telling you the display size. Use clip properties in FCP for detailed and accurate data. File size all depends on what codec you are using which from your post i cant tell anything significant, HD can be a lot of things but your not giving us enough details here. But in general, if you want the besby Scott Erickson - Café LA Pixel size limitations - 14 years agoWhat exactly is the pixel size limitation for stills working inside final cut studio? Recently i got some extremely high res stills to use from an artist(6000x4496) and i did some zooms and pans to show all the details of the work. Final Cut didn't give me any problems during import, everything worked properly and rendered fine but there was no way to get it out of Final Cut to a QuickTime. Exby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Automating the export process? - 15 years agoYou def can export multiple sequences from FCP using Compressor, even from multiple projects. Just highlight all the diff sequences and do export using Compressor. If you need multiple projects, do the same thing but then go to Compressor, tear off tab, and then drag all the instances to one Compressor window and it will process both of those open projects. We export lots of sequences from many eby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Direct to Disk live capture help. - 15 years agoI would have them set the camera to downscale the footage to DV Anamorphic. Capturing live HDV streams has caused problems in the past for me and its not exactly real time anyway. Plus, im sure this is only going to a DVD anyway right? They wont know the difference if it was shot at 1080 or 480 as its all 480 on the delivery anyway.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: DVCPro to Prores conversion - 15 years agoTurn on frame controls in Compressor. It will take significantly longer but i think it does a pretty damn good job and up-compressing footage.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: G-Raid G-SpeedES noise level? - 15 years agoThe ES are wicked loud, trust me, we have 3 blocks in 3 editing bays(ok cubicles really) and they are super loud. I love G-Tech and all their other drives but these things are way louder than the should be, and the fans never spool down, even if the computer is off. And if you disconnect cables improperly, an alarm goes off that beeps fairly loudly. Performance wise they do they job tho, we gby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Automating the export process? - 15 years agoIf you have any scripting chops, you can have Compressor run apple scripts on the end of an encode. You can also daisy chain the exports, which is nice, like export a High_Res master and then go to MPEG-2. Anyway, that being said i dont think DVDSP is open to scripting but perhaps iDVD or Roxio or someother DVD burning program might be. What would be wicked sweet would be if you could save outby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: FCP on a Laptop - 15 years agomy old powerbook G4 has handled many DVCProHD projects and my current MacBookPro is quite a bit faster than my G5 tower. It can handle it, just stay away from HDV unless you need to, it;s pretty processor intensiveby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Master Templates Font Problems? - 15 years agoyeah we've been looking into the FontBook issue right now, trying to split up the font family into different unique families of their own. Hope it works out, thanks for the response Mark, as always...by Scott Erickson - Motion Master Templates Font Problems? - 15 years agoSo we've made some Master Templates for use in our FCP editing, but when our editors open these projects, it seems to pick a different font from the font family we use. IE, we use Helvetica Neue 85 lets say, another editor opens the the FCP project to export, then FCP loads Heletica Neue 60 and then of course we're screwed and cant export since its the wrong font? This happens again and again...by Scott Erickson - Motion Re: OT: DVexpo - 15 years agoLynda.com, watch LAFCPUG guru Larry Jordan and save yourself a lot of money and learn all the other software you need as wellby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Producing a DVD for playback in Italy...fairly soon - 15 years agoSo i had a similar situation once, deadline family going to Italy, etc. I took my SCQT and dropped it into a iDVD after i set the format to PAL and opened a new project. Worked like a charm, no extra work, and quality was totally good enough for the end viewer. It's not broadcast quality but hey, it got the job done...by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: FCS Tip- QuickLook - 15 years agoBoth of those suggestions are really good, i never used the video scrub tool before, kinda neat but i still like instant-on functionality of QuickLook. I often create a workbench timeline where i can organize and group assets from but then i usually copy/paste to another timeline as needed. Tho MatchFrame is probably my favorite shortcut as of late, sooo many good uses.by Scott Erickson - Café LA FCS Tip- QuickLook - 15 years agoSo i'm sure like everyone else, i'm often giving hundreds of files of assets(movies, stills, audio) by other people for me to use as b-roll in our productions. Normally, i organize them all into folders, and pull those folders into FCP, and then when needed, dutifully click and scrub through each clip until i find the one i need. Now, i dont do this anymore. I hate clicking, i'm very much a shby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Q Master - 15 years agoQmaster is really good for breaking up parts of your render across your processors while using Compressor, i.e. 8 cores compressing one single stream into Mpeg-2 one frame at a time is really inefficient while compressing 4 streams and re-assembling them later is much more efficient. The good thing is that FCP is fairly efficient at using all your cores already. It pegs them all out fairly welby Scott Erickson - Café LA |
