Pretend there's nothing new? Lose all the visitors for the first half of the convention? Or if they're going to have the booth going Mon and Tue all day... what will the big surprise be Wednesday night?by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: New Final Cut Pro at Supermeet, April 12 - 13 years agoSeriously... would Apple roll out a big preview/big announcement like this at the end of day 2 of a four day conference? Last time wasn't the big event on Sunday mid-day, before NAB even launched? Wouldn't that make more sense? Also, didn't The Steve get my e-mail that I'm flying in Sunday morning (in anticipation of a repeat of the Sunday announcement) and flying out Monday night? And Iby Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Edit in HDV and author to DVD Studio Pro? - 13 years agoIf you're looking for a step-by-step tutorial, try reading the manual or buying a FCP tutorial book - the Wohl book is popular, as well as the Weyland book. All three are quite good. If you have a specific question, feel free to ask.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: How long should a half-hr show be for broadcast? - 13 years agoMy good old days are apparently not as far back as your good old days. :-) I believe my first PBS gig wasn't until about '92.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: How long should a half-hr show be for broadcast? - 13 years ago28:30? Jeez, even in the good old days it was never 28:30. I was producing regularly for a local affiliate and it was 22:26 for the half hour, but as everyone else has indicated... ask.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Can Anyone ID This Media - 13 years agoWhen you look at the tape inside it, does it look like teeny-tiny images, or is it magnetic tape (like a cassette tape)? (Or, as Joey suggests, does it get ink on your fingers? :-) ) If it's images, it's microfilm and you could probably figure out a way to break into the case and manually scan it in. If it's magnetic tape, I think I've got bad news for you.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: write signature on screen - 13 years agoAfter Effects, motion path with "Write On". Probably (possibly) a way to do it with Motion, too.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: FCP 5 asking for Serial number - 13 years agoGotta make sure you have the dashes in between serial number bits. Very important, and sort of un-intuitive.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Testing DVD output from COmpressor prior to burning - 13 years agoPut it in DVD Studio Pro and hit "Simulate"?by Mike Watson - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Studio Wall Monitor Suggestions... - 13 years agoI buy the Vizios from Costco exclusively.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Question about H.264 - 13 years agoI shoot with the 5D regularly ... I do record audio externally via an H4n, but I feed the H4n into the camera and often use the audio recorded in-camera (although... mixed via the H4n) for versions up to and including final export. The audio trouble isn't as bad as it once was. Trying to mount all the crap that you used to stick on a broadcast camera onto the 5D.... now that's a challenge.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: OT: Any meet planned for NAB this year? - 13 years agoApril 12 in the evening or during the day? I booked tickets last night, but I'm leaving Monday evening. I assumed the supermeet would be April 14, but if it's the 13th mid-day maybe I could extend. -MWby Mike Watson - Café LA Re: What do I charge? - 13 years ago> I live in the Northwest, but work for clients all > over the globe and we base our fee's on $150 an > hour and have no problem getting it. I'm charging in the $125 range, and have no trouble filling my schedule. My point was not that Loren's numbers were accurate, but when I was 20, "charge what your time is worth" didn't mean much to me.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: What do I charge? - 13 years agoInteresting post, Loren. Well within the ballpark for something that's so variable. About 15 years ago I would have killed in cold blood to see someone put it so simply, with numbers and dollar signs. Would you say that is an editor showing up at your door with trimmed fingernails ready to edit, or an editor with a Mac Pro and a Kona card and a home office in his valley condo? Interested asby Mike Watson - Café LA Automating the Export process - 13 years agoI was working on an hour-long edit last night until late, and went to bed when I started the export. It estimated 20 minutes to completion, so I napped for a bit and got up and fired the h.264 compression, then set the alarm again and got up to start the Vimeo uploader a few hours later. The process, as always, was time consuming but without flaw. When I re-did my kitchen, I did most of the work myself but outsourced the plumbing. He said he had been told ages ago that you should expect to win 1/3 of the jobs you bid. He said if you were winning 100% of the jobs you bid, you were way underpriced. (Truthfully, I stretch it to 4:3 action safe for the titles.) Everything fills the 16:9 screen. I worked for a TV station and created the spec sheet for them and several other stations in the group. I know it seems like it's a bunch of idiots on the other side, but they have a ton of crap to deal with over there, too.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Record dv signal straight to mac or pc software? - 13 years agoI've done the capture now "non-controllable device" thing, and as long as you roll a backup tape in the camera, it's not a bad solution for the right situation.by Mike Watson - Café LA Re: Long H264 Encode - 13 years agoAbout 6 hours of h.264 converted since I posted this morning, have about 6 more to go. Tons faster than before. I'm perplexed, I had always used streamclip for incoming conversions, compressor for outgoing conversions (because I always use h.264), but will have to revise my workflow. Thanks, Derek. -MWby Mike Watson - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Long H264 Encode - 13 years agoWell, that was obvious. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.by Mike Watson - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Long H264 Encode - 13 years agoI shot a long (3 day) seminar last week, straight to DVD. As a freebie, I brought my laptop and recorded firewire straight into FCP, DV-NTSC. I have about 20 hours of video this way. I laid the video on the timeline, did some *very* basic editing, and exported non-self-contained. I dropped the non-self-contained QT's into compressor (each between 2-3 hours long) and dropped H264 LAN and Mby Mike Watson - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Strange Color Shift - 13 years agoYUV, yes. The whole video is shot on a cyc, lit pink. I've used Title3D to add the kids names to some of the shots. The names are yellow. Any time the name comes up, the background takes on an orange-y color, and when the name dissolves off, the background snaps back to pink. This happens everytime I use Title3D.
