turning off journalling on capture drive - 17 years ago
For some reason someone at Ciprico told me to format the RAID as OSX Extended Journalled (one of the drives came back and the other is still there being repaired) and from reading some of the posts this will cause a performance hit such as uncompressed 10 bit SD timeline no effects and a simple AB roll, and FCP will report dropped frames! Is there a way to turn off journaling on the capby mark@avolution - Café LA

I found reference to the problem; it is called flagging and could be caused by tape tension or by incorrect timing of the vertical interval. ouch! here is the reference it is V7 on the leftby mark@avolution - Café LA

This has more to do with Betacam SP; but none the less I am trying to digitize this Betacam Footage into FCP. On the video frame, in the viewer the top 3 or 4 percent will skew left and right on certain parts of the tape (whether live to monitor, or before or after digitize) the bars on the tape will also skew in this same area. As this moement I just checked about Quicktime and it says Quicktime 7.03 (player) So at this second I have a working OSX10.39, a working Final Cut Pro and a non-working drive array (as it was striped with 10.4x). if quicktime 7.03 causes no issues with Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD at this moment; wouldn't it be logical to guess that Final Cut Pro 4.% HD would work with QT with Tiger? Sorry, when I said Pro Tools I meant the Apple software that came with the G5...Final Cut Pro 4.5HD, DVD Studio Pro 3, and Motion 1.1. I can assure you we have no such ProTools (as the link) we only have the Apple and the Apple software. What I need to know if the above mentioned software will still WORK if we upgrade to Tiger OSX 10.4. As our returned Huge System was returned with sby mark@avolution - Café LA

Big question; we just just had are Huge Systems returned from Huge and they striped them with a OSX higher than ours (at present 10.39). So it was said; just upgrade to Tiger. If I do this will our ProTools still work Final Cut Pro4.5 HD, DVD Studio Pro 3, Motion 1.1, etc with the new OS WITHOUT all of the apps having to be re-installed? Has any one ever published a 90 min SD 720x486 movie at 10 bit high quality self contained quicktime. I was wondering for a client if we could put his 90 minute film and fit it on a 500G external drive for shipping to the post-house. Any experience welcome! Thanksby mark@avolution - Café LA

Don't forget that Windows 32bit has a 4 Gig limit on file size! Weird Crash with Log and Capture - 17 years ago
Firstly let me say that we are running on temporary but new drives (OS X Extended) whilst the Huge System drives are out to California for warranty repair. I was digitizing a DVD to the timeline; and my sequence is set to 480p DV (something that these temporary MyBooks can handle on the 800 firewire connection) Basically the L&C window will show the digitize in progress no probs; butby mark@avolution - Café LA

I think 3d Studio Max or Maya is up to it. You'd have to break up each and every picture up in photoshop and create a 2D object for the cutout in 3ds Max; and then position all the 2D elements for foreground and background. Sorry, another question from a PC user turned Mac. I am trying to archive FCP Quicktime movies to DVD Data for archival reasons. I can not get OSX 10.38 to ungrey the Cut function in Finder and have read the help. For now I copy paste to a new directory, burn to DVD and then send to trash IS there a way to cut paste from one directory to another rather than copy paste to a new temby mark@avolution - Café LA

1000 points to you! It says the MyBook drives are MS-DOS formatted. I started to wonder, as all my 4+GB movies would not transfer. So, how does one format for Mac ? It does the same thing with the suggested drag and drop and I can see from the FCP file structure what is happening. On the original Lily2007, if I open finder >audio render files >feb 24 2007 >feb 25 2007 >autosave vault >autosave vault >feb 24 2007 >feb 24 2007 etc See how there are two feb 24 2007 entries in the autosave vault the Oby mark@avolution - Café LA

Hi! Natively they come ready to roll for the Mac (or PC) they are the Western Digital My Book Pro drives. Thet run on the firewire 800 ports at the back of the Mac. We are sending back our Huge System 3200S for repair, so I have purchased two Western Digital MyBook Pro 500G external firewire drives and hooked them up to the same system, via firewire, to the Mac with the Huge System Drive. No problems here so far, both external 500G drives mount with no problem. Now there is HD footage that is in a directory call Lily 2007, and it is 440.9G in size aby mark@avolution - Café LA

I have to start backing up FCP render and capture scratch files to fixed sized hard-drives ie: the 500G external for example. I have more PC than Mac experience but here is my question On a PC you can right click the properties of a folder and it might say 300G in 26 files. For back-up purposes I was wondering if the Mac finder will let me do the same thing, and find out the total sizeby mark@avolution - Café LA

Also, I just noticed this; but when the video is in pause mode the luminance seems about 10 per cent brighter than when in play mode. Once the playhead starts moving the luminance will drop to what I assume is the correct levels. Quite oddby mark@avolution - Café LA

Firstly, I checked the FAQ and found nothing. On DV footage I digitized at 8 bit>DV, I set a simple fade-up from black on the timeline on the clip. It appears that the luminance will flash during the transition of the clip; and it does this whether I use a dissove or animate the opacity of the clip. It is driving mr crazy, can any one help?by mark@avolution - Café LA
Upgrade path from FCP 4.5 to 5.xx - 17 years ago
On the Apple page/Final Cut Pro/Buy Now it has options for upgrade from 1,2,or 3 OR buy new. Is FCP 4.5 an option to allow for upgrade? It is only Motion I want to upgrade, but it seems one must upgrade everything. Please adviseby mark@avolution - Café LA

One thing we do is export our 10 bit movies as Quicktime; as recommended here (LAFCPUG) and then use Sorensen Squeeze to create the mpg for DVD Studio Pro.by mark@avolution - Café LA
Upgrading Motion 1.0 to Motion 2.x - 17 years ago
I have been searching the net for ways to upgrade ONLY our Motion for our Final Cut Pro 4x platform. When I get to a page; such as Buy.com; it says it is not available from the manufacturer. Do I get the feeling the only way to upgrade is to upgrade up to Final Cut Pro 5xx ????? Please advise.by mark@avolution - Motion
odd render behaviour on timeline in FCP 4.5 HD - 17 years ago
I came across this in the past through days. Any content entered onto a new project in DV, 8 bit or 10 bit will not render in any way shape or form. However, if I take the content over to an older project made last month, it will render out correctly on the older timeline. An example, a simple DV project laid on the timeline with less than a dozen fade from or to blacks, and two tracby mark@avolution - Café LA

If FCP is complaining about "dropped frames" on digitize, AND you are not using audio. Then disable the preference called "abort or warn on dropped frames" However, never use this on clips that have audio!!! I had 11 hours of crappy VHS to digitize on FCP with audio and I turned this off and I ended up with 11 hours of out out of sync audio! if you have crappy fooby mark@avolution - Café LA

I was reading a tutorial on this site called Final Cut Pro 4 to MPEG 2 (Without Compressor) & Basic AIFF to AC3 and in the body of the article it mentions that it sends out a .mv2 file for video and a .aiff file for audio. I am interested in converting some vhs tapes to PC mpeg; but is it not convention to have the audio and video interleaved together in one file (ala PC's bbmby mark@avolution - Café LA

I had imported in a 32bit movie file into FCP 4.5HD and decided the yellow wasn't yellow enough. I added a color correct to this overlay animation and all of a sudden the alpha info disspeared as long as the ColorCorrect filter was enabled. Is there a way around this?by mark@avolution - Café LA

Hi! I am doing some pan and scan of 1440x1080 images for a 30 second slide commercial. On a 6 second clip for example, the first keyframe starts at 1 second in and moves over the screen and stops at 5 second. This gives me 1 second of heads-tails to establish the content.
