Do you have a PC? If so try this. Export as pro Res mov from the mac. Port to the PC. What I do is export from the mac as a proRes, then port to the PC, use adobe media encoder to convert to avi on the pc. check the mov for synch prior to export to avi on both the mac and pc. should work. fcp isn't great at avi exports sometimes. Friend needs advice on mac laptop editing - 14 years ago
A friend of mine was wondering if the new MAC laptops have the horsepower to edit DVCPro HD codec. His project at present is on our system with the Huge Drives which more than handle it, but he was wondering if this could be transferred toi a new mac with FCP bought with it. I did a custom project that was 2048x512, and not only was RT disabled, but all video and all audio would have to be rendered. And as it was for computer playback only, I made sure to disable all video outputs, as this resolution doesn't meet the generic HD standards. The Fibre Channel was more expensive, and yes, I think the Sonnet solution would work. Are you referring to Option #1? The Optical controller? We are upgrading from a G5, so any relief from the land of slow-o-mac-tic, as it stands would be a relief. The quickest way would be to use a travelling matte with two versions of the video. One heavilly blurred and one normal. Create a white shape that will go over the T-shirt and use this as the travel matte that you will manually move and scale. Set up track 1 blurred-travel matte, the travel matte, and then video 1 non-blurred. I am on a PC right now but I think that is the stacking order.by mark@avolution - Café LA

Good stuff. I'd like to try this method with one change. Not add fields on output, as we do a lot of stuff for web, and it makes no sense to add fields to progressive input HD; regardless if it is scaled down on final output. When I do web orientated stuff I disable Video Out from FCP, as I only want to see it in the canvas as not as video. Your help in this regards is awesome. D-Mby mark@avolution - Café LA

Thanks Dave, that would be cool. Because of this issue I have asked that ALL XDCAM be shot at 30p (29.97) rather than 24p (23.976). The motion artifacts from a pan which is shot at 23.976 and plopped down on a 29.97 timeline is just bloody awful! I disagree with most of the diatribe in the blog. If you want a headache, crank up Adobe CS4 on a PC, and you'll see (in my opinion), a really wonky editing platform. How did you get esata on a G5? I thought all G5's (except the late Quads) were pci-X) whilst the intels and the late quads are pci-e. Did you find an esata cards for pci-x? Apple would never license FCP or its Pro Suite to Windows systems IMHO. Noone then would have to buy Apple Computers then, and it would be devastating to Apples bottom line , in my opinion, and that is why I never see it happening. The very fact the colour picker is inaccurate bugs me, As someone who started in 3ds max, if I wanted 254,254,254 I would have typed it in-but I didn't, I discreetly typed 255,255,255. Besides the white (and only 255,255,255 is white). 254,254,254 down to 1,1,1 are all greys, and 0,0,0 are black. (Not NTSC but RGB) As an animator its as annoying as rotating an object 5.625 degreesby mark@avolution - Café LA

I just found out about the Kona lHi, it looks like this would be a good candidate to replace both the old Kona 2 on the G5 and the aja io, plus it has analogue in-out. Thanks for pointing me in this direction. Remember, I am revamping a circa 2004 mac system, so my choices are sometimes not self-evident-That's why I ask for advice! Fine, but in every application EVER (with the exception of FCP) the RGB sliders go from 0-255. Maybe this question is better asked on apple.ca discussions, as I want to find out WHY they did this. This still does not explain that if you bring up the RGB sliders and move them all the way to the right, at first it says 255,255,255, when you click on OK and reenter the sliders they say 254,254,254. If a program offers you RGB sliders (and FCP does) why would they only go to 254? This makes zero sense, and Apple Motion's RGB (not YCbCr sliders) go from zero to 255. In an eight bit color space, ala photoshop, 3ds max etc there are 256 steps in eight bit from 0-255, or 1 to 256 whether you are base zero or base 1 respectively. I submit that 255 (0-254 as FCP reports) steps is mathematically incorrect, and please check this against any other normal program... Try this in your FCP to confirm or deny. Drop a colour generator onto the timeline. Edit the colour by clicking on white, from the colour dropdown. Mouse over to the RGB slider-it reports 254,254,254. Close then reopen generator, manually type in 255,255,255, hit OK reopen the colour generator and read the values, on mine I get 254,254,254! Yes, a 12 or 16 true core mac would be awesome. I don't know if this old G5 can make it though. Everything in technology has changed such as G5 changes to Mac Pro PCIX is replaced with PCIe (wiping out the thought of using the Kona 2 in a new machine) the Huge System Array (so in vogue in 04') is replaced with CalDigit or GSpeed Tiger becomes Leopard then gets snowed on! <<<&lby mark@avolution - Café LA

We have a Sony Cinealta HD Camera, so Id like to run a HD ingest, regardless if it is going to HD or SD. Of late everything is XDCAM with graphics from Motion and sometimes 3ds Max.
