Why 23.98?by JoeE - Café LA Highlighted area on track during trimming acting weird - 16 years agoHi- I'm working on a 35mm feature and lately when I select a cut to be trimmed, quite often I can click and the area is selected but the shadow on the track doesn't appear. Sometimes if I change the size of the timeline, the shadow appear, but not always. This is happening more and more lately. Is there some solution? Is it also related to the problem where I've done an asymetrical trim acby JoeE - Café LA Easy way to cut in old version? - 16 years agoAm I missing something? In avid, if I had a section subclipped in a bin of an alt/old version of a scene or part of a scene, I would just load it in the source bin and mark my ins and outs or remove the old version and then cut in the new. With FCP I get something that is tied to/named for the subclip the instead of the original clips. Is there a way to make it work like avid?by JoeE - Café LA Re: is 512MB on my Macbook too little? keep getting dropped frames during playback... - 16 years agoYou should have the maximum RAM available in any laptop that is running a pro application. Makes a huge difference.....by JoeE - Café LA Re: 1:85 Mask over some transitions..... - 16 years agoAn editor down the hall just suggested that I nest the sections that are giving me a problem and that worked!by JoeE - Café LA 1:85 Mask over some transitions..... - 16 years agoI'm having a problem with a 24frm timeline. I have some transitions that have muliple layers with things like dipping to white and cropped supers. When I apply a 1:85 mask, the effect stays full screen. I have applied the mask to all the layers and also just the bottom, but nothing seems to change it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?by JoeE - Café LA Just Talked To Tascam... - 16 years agoIn case anyone is interested, the eq doesn't work with FCP as it's a digital only control, so it's not really such a great analog-side of the mixer. And it doesn't appear to pan the analog source either, which sucks if you are using stereo music and are trying to create a phantom center for your dialog. Might need to just still with the MCU and separate mixer.by JoeE - Café LA Re: Tascam FW-1082 Question - 16 years agoYeah, I know, but with these control surfaces, because the units are basically shells for FCP and other programs to control how it wishes, the owner's manuals are horribly incomplete.....by JoeE - Café LA Tascam FW-1082 Question - 16 years agoWent out and bought one yesterday. A few questions: 1. Does it run on Midi like the MCU or Firewire or both? 2. How do I use the EQ controls on the analog inputs? 3. How do I set the pan on the analog inputs? At first glance, it's incredibly cool, although not as well put together as the MCU. I have been having trouble with the faders (the master volume works, but not the individual channelby JoeE - Café LA Re: Reccomendations on a Audio Mixer for Video Editing? - 16 years agoSo does it work as both a control surface and a analog mixer? I have the Mackie Control Universal and I'm bummed that I also have to use a separate mixer for the monitor speakers.by JoeE - Café LA Audio Pop problem - 16 years agoHere's what's happening. I am working on a 35mm feature, cutting at dv on a 24frm timeline after reverse telecine. Drives are FW. When I have a section where the audio has been rendered to item level (I run 8 tracks at medium quality) and I extend a rendered piece, at the point where the line on the audio goes from blue to green, to indicate unrendered portion of the track, I'm hearing a pop.by JoeE - Café LA Re: LCD vs Plasma - 16 years agoI think it depends on the size, as well. I know for a fact that 40-42" is the ideal size for LCD. Any larger and clarity suffers. My dad did all the research for his home and at that size, it was really the best thing.by JoeE - Café LA Re: Concrete Floors and high ceilings! Help! (OT, a bit) - 16 years agoBasically flat concrete ceiling with some concrete beams near the walls.by JoeE - Café LA Re: Concrete Floors and high ceilings! Help! (OT, a bit) - 16 years ago18' x 13' with 12' ceilings. Right now there are those very low industrial carpet squares covering about half the concrete floor.by JoeE - Café LA Re: Concrete Floors and high ceilings! Help! (OT, a bit) - 16 years agoThanks for the suggestion. I'll have the grip department bring me something. What about foam stuff like Auralex? Did you ever try that?by JoeE - Café LA Concrete Floors and high ceilings! Help! (OT, a bit) - 16 years agoI just moved into my new cutting room for a studio feature and I am dying from reflections and muttled dialog. Part of the problem is the film's tracks have a huge dynamic range, but a big problem has to be the room. I've brought in a better mixer with better equilization controls but I need some room treatment. But will anything solve the problem? Or are the high ceilings going to force me toby JoeE - Café LA Re: firewire ntsc basic or Firewire ntsc that is the question - 16 years agoI don't know if this applies, but if you are doing a 35mm show, capturing from DVCAM, you are likely to get strange offsets from your .ale file if you don't use basic.by JoeE - Café LA Re: What's the best telecine option for 35mm features? - 16 years agoOr just do a complete film finish. Don't forget that it'll look better! Photochemical finish still has a way higher resolution than any DI. Just like vinyl sounds better than cd!by JoeE - Café LA Re: audio render problem - 16 years agoI have a not completely different problem: About 6 times now, 1 month into a feature, I have had rendered audio out be of sync. The clip plays fine when it is at playback level but when it gets rendered to item level, it's playing the wrong section of the clip. If I match frame then replace the edit, everything is fine, rendered at item level and all. And this happens on both of the computersby JoeE - Café LA Thanks - 16 years agoThis time, I think it was related to some bad media. I replaced it and so far so go.by JoeE - Café LA "General Error" on rendering - 16 years agoI have been working with some multiple track audio edits that require rendering and when the render is complete, up pops the General Error message. No problem with the actual rendering, just keep getting the message. I have trashed prefs, etc. and the render files are being saved on a second internal drive in the G5. Any suggestions?by JoeE - Café LA Item Level Render changes clip - 16 years agoWhy is it that sometimes (maybe every three days or so) when I do an item level render, an audio clip that's playing is the wrong section? If I re-lay the audio section (by matching clip and replacing) then re-render, the problem goes away. This can happen with both music aifs and regular captured dailies. Any ideas? Thanks!by JoeE - Café LA Problem Solved! - 16 years agoIf anyone ever has a problem with the MCU, just unplug and re-plug the midi cable, making sure that the fit is tight. With MIDI, anytime there is not a perfect connection, only some of the controls will be affected.by JoeE - Café LA Control Surface - MCU - question - 16 years agoI just got a Mackie Control Universal and I can't seem to get the motorized faders to work properly. They rest a infinity. If I grab one, I can adjust the level, but then the fader immediately returns back to infinity. And the faders never follow along with the cut, even if I've recorded automation. Ever other button works as advertised. Am I messed up on some setting?by JoeE - Café LA Re: Flex File 35mm help - 16 years agoRick- We are starting a film next week. I have no intention of screening directly to Analog/NTSC since we are using firewire and it never really works without dropping frames. We'll screen on our 30" Cinema Display and if we need anything larger, just burn a dvd and take it to a nice short-throw screening room. Given the above, do you recommend cutting at 24 rather than 23.98? If I am cby JoeE - Café LA LiveType extend live font - 16 years agoSorry if this is too basic! I just started using LiveType for the first time and built a title from the live fonts. Once it's done doing it's animation on it holds for 1 second (built in time) but in need it to hold for 3 seconds. If I drag it out, it slows the whole live font effect and if I tell it to hold last frame for 2 more seconds, it loses the animation of that last frame and just freeby JoeE - Café LA Sync issues with USB or Optical Audio? - 17 years agoI'm in the process of setting up a system to cut a studio comedy feature. I'm planning to use the Mackie Control Universal, so I will have a USB Midi converter. I'm trying to figure out the best way to monitor the audio with my Mackie HR824 speakers. Of course I could just go out the headphone jack, but if I could get better quality than that it would be useful. The first possibility is I canby JoeE - Café LA |
