Click HERE to register now inexplicable offline media - 15 years agoWhy do some of the clips in my browser randomly turn up without media when I revisit a project, when they all looked fine at the end of my last session? I'm pretty good about labeling my source reels, so I don't suspect any referencing conflicts on my scratch disks.by davko - Café LA Captures are wildly out of synch - 15 years agoAt first I thought this problem involved just one reel (where a strange freeze frame appeared at the head of the clip), but now it appears a number of captures in my project are about 15 seconds out of synch. It seems to be a randomly phenomenon, and one that occurs somewhere in the middle of the clip rather than throughout its duration. It does not seem to be the result of drift; the synch jusby davko - Café LA Re: trouble playing reference files - 16 years agoI'm with you guys all the way. I even intuited all the good reasons and common sense for creating self-contained files awhile back, yet still plodded along with reference files out of habit. I hope this discussion rubs off on others, because I know from my own experience in talking to fellow users, along with the aforementioned literature (yes, it's true), that there's a fair amount of misinfby davko - Café LA Re: trouble playing reference files - 16 years agoNow I know exactly why certain projects have become irretrievable only days after being accessible, for I had been routinely modifying pre-existing render files. All around, self-contained files are the best option for the tasks I've been performing and projects I've had to go back to. Funny, though, how the conventional wisdom in many texts and tutorials treats them with disfavor.by davko - Café LA Re: trouble playing reference files - 16 years agoAs I've been recycling a lot of titles created in Title Tool, changing text and re-rendering, I now wonder if this has been corrupting the files. I've been resisting self-contained files until now, trying to save drive space, but glad to know this is the commonly accepted remedy for long-term preservation... Thanks.by davko - Café LA trouble playing reference files - 16 years agoI've noticed that after several days, many Quicktime files created in FCP will no longer play. They appear to be the reference files that rely on media captured to my 1TB external hard drive. Is this a common problem with external hard drives?by davko - Café LA trouble deleting render files - 16 years agoI'm try to use Render Manager to clean out the contents of 2 folders called "Additional Render Files" and "Render Files in Undo Queue," but nothing happens when I check their respective spaces in the REMOVE column and click okay. I successfully removed a bunch of render files just moments before -- do perhaps certain folders and their former render contents continue to sby davko - Café LA Re: referencing music clips to proper media - 16 years agoMany thanks for the detailed walk-through. Just for the record, these are royalty-free cuts that I paid for, the terms of which grant me unlimited use.by davko - Café LA referencing music clips to proper media - 16 years agoI inadvertently cut a sequence to music not realizing the media was being drawn from a CD (created for the purpose of AIFF conversion), and not my hard drive. Even though I've since loaded those files into an I-Tunes folder, FCP cannot find a path to them; hence, I still can't remove the disc without my media going offline. Is there a way to redirect the existing clips to the music files tby davko - Café LA Re: speed change applies to all subsequent clips? - 16 years agoI was match-framing tails and backing in "replay" style, not even realizing that somewhere along the line, I'd reversed the process of remapping & cutting into the timeline... thus working in master clips! Thanks for setting me straight.by davko - Café LA speed change applies to all subsequent clips? - 16 years agoThis is becoming such an annoying problem, I have to believe I'm either doing something wrong or that there's a workaround. I'm working on a project that requires a lot of speed changes. But when I go into REMAP and change the percentage figure for a particular clip, that information remains in place for any clip I load into the viewer. Is it really the case that I must go back into MOTIONby davko - Café LA Re: external drive goes offline - 16 years agoThis would seem to be consistent with what's happening now that I've gotten past the crashing problem (by resetting my device before attempting to log & capture). Now, strangely, while the tape runs smoothly in the camera, the preview monitor "freezes" the playback every 5 seconds or so, resuming wherever it decides to reset itself, but eventually freezing permanently. Clip playby davko - Café LA external drive goes offline - 16 years agoThe first time this happened I thought it was an anomaly, but apparently not: I've had to change capture devices because the camera I normally use was needed elsewhere. But as soon as I hook up the backup camera and select LOG AND CAPTURE, a message and red exclamation mark come up warning me that the device I removed was "not properly put away." (Huh?) After I select OKAY, all oby davko - Café LA Re: capture scratch redundancy - 16 years agoAnd indeed, this is a rare and unintentional departure from standard procedure. Just glad the most logical solution -- reconnecting -- is an acceptable corrective. Many thanks.by davko - Café LA capture scratch redundancy - 16 years agoI've somehow managed to create 2 separate capture scratch folders on a newly added drive, and already have media from different ongoing projects within each. Can I consolidate the media from these projects -- without messing up FCP's delicate reference hierarchy -- by simply moving them from one capture scratch folder to another, or do I need to recapture? In general, can a project's media,by davko - Café LA Re: more anamorphic troubles - 16 years agoThe fog is lifting, and this whole issue is at last starting to become clear. Many thanks for eradicating up the last vestiges of confusion and helping me lay this topic to rest. I might mention, however, a curious discovery I made while searching for a way to get the Quicktime movie itself to play in the correct format: if you go to CUSTOM SETTINGS and check the ANAMORPHIC box, lo and beholby davko - Café LA more anamorphic troubles - 16 years agoSorry to revisit this issue, but now that I've successfully solved the problem of proper viewing of anamorphic clips in my timeline (FIT TO WINDOW), I cannot export it in Quick Time Movie without it reverting to a squeezed image. I've tried every combination of setting, and I've checked and unchecked "anamorphic" box in the browser, yet no matter how I export, I cannot produce a properby davko - Café LA Re: can't get letterboxed 16x9 frame - 16 years agoMany thanks, Derek. I was looking for this selection and hadn't realized I could scroll higher. The article is excellent, clarifying a lot of unnecessary confusion.by davko - Café LA can't get letterboxed 16x9 frame - 16 years agoI've just captured some 16:9 DV footage and cannot get it to appear in either the viewer or canvas as as cleanly letterboxed horizontal frame. It appears as an "enlarged" square that I either have to shrink to 50% or rock right and left in order to see in its entirety. Not quite sure what I've done wrong here, as I've worked with this format before, and it's looked good in both windby davko - Café LA de-interlacing query - 16 years agoDoes Quicktime Conversion automatically de-interlace .mov files created from the time line? Upon selecting the clip's menus WINDOW---MOVIE PROPERTIES, then alternately checking/unchecking the "single field" box, nothing happens. If the clips truly are interlaced, the fields should change accordingly, shouldn't they? If true, how do I preserve interlaced properties before export?by davko - Café LA Re: HDV clip export problems - 16 years agoTurns out Photo JPEG is actually their first choice. So it's all starting to make sense: - Old JPEG A program equals outgoing or obsolete program. - HDV horizontal compression yields 1440x1080 (inherently squeezing image); thus, change pixel settings to 16x9 ratio prior to export. I think the sizing selections in QC might just accomplish the latter. In any case, lots of good info hereby davko - Café LA Re: HDV clip export problems - 16 years agoThanks for the correction -- sorry, I did mean Motion JPEG A. Any reason why it doesn't appear in the drop-down menu for FCP 6.0? I'll give Photo JPEG a try, in the meantime. Still concerned about my aspect ratio problem. Based on those earlier exports, it seems to be unrelated to codec choice. I'd best wait for an answer on this before attempting another 3-hour upload.by davko - Café LA Re: HDV clip export problems - 16 years agoThey recommend to favor a Quicktime File and the Jpeg Motion2 codec, however I was only able to find something called Jpeg 2000 in my FCP 6.0 Quicktime Conversion menu choices. And when I tried that, then exported to a desktop folder, the file size was something preposterous -- over a gig. Is there something I'm overlooking here? If not, any workarounds? Many thanks.by davko - Café LA Re: HDV clip export problems - 16 years agoI suspected I had gotten way off track, perhaps by letting the fact that this is my first export of an HDV capture more complicated than it needs to be. I did indeed use the H.264 codec for my first export, selecting a 1440x1080 format using Quicktome Conversion. It resulted in a file size of almost 500 mb. As this is intended for upload to a stock library, I was led to believe from other saby davko - Café LA HDV clip export problems - 16 years agoWhat compression format is recommended for export of a 30-sec. HD clip that is to be uploaded to the Web? I've tried several (resulting in file sizes ranging from 311-480 mb) and all have yielded poor playback quality. Also, I can't get any of the clips, which I've saved to a desktop folder, to appear in the correct 16x9 aspect ratio, even when I play them it back through my Quicktime Player.by davko - Café LA Re: can't establish firewire connection - 16 years agoThanks for explicating this process so thoroughly, and removing so much of the clutter. Happily, I'm able to capture using the recommended HDV 1080i60 Firewire Basic. I'm also heartened to know my camera's connection display is functioning properly, but would like to inform other HV20 & HV30 owners that the manual instruction you cite above is later followed on p. 76 by this confusing (by davko - Café LA can't capture HD clip - 16 years agoNow that I've finally ascertained that the firewire connection between the Canon HV20 and FCP is probably okay (see thread below), why can't I capture an HD clip from a marked in to out point? I've tried every imaginable combination of capture/firewire settings, yet I've only succeeded in capturing on the fly using Apple Intermediate Codec. If I use Firewire Basic, then try to capture the selecby davko - Café LA Re: can't establish firewire connection - 16 years agoI just ran a test with a Canon H1, connected to a different computer and different editing software, and it produced the problem: the readout for the HD connection display grays out when the fire wire is connected; relights when it's not. So maybe this is normal for Canons. What's mystifying in both cases is that while able to capture on the fly, I'm unable to batch-capture or capture fromby davko - Café LA Re: can't establish firewire connection - 16 years agoI'm stuck. Appears I can't capture after all -- not even on the fly. I do have control of the device, though, with the enlarged HD window showing up in FCP... So it's the ability to capture in HD that seems to remain disabled (no problem downconverting). What other settings or diagnostics could I be overlooking?by davko - Café LA |
