From the larger capture window that now appears, and from the full set of log & capture commands that are now at my disposal, I now seem to be able to capture HD just fine. But I'm still disturbed by the lack of the highlighted camera-menu selection "HDV/DV." It reappears when I unplug the firewire, but grays out when I'm connby davko - Café LA Re: can't establish firewire connection - 16 years agoOkay, a good start, because I wasn't paying attention to the setting and it was wrong. But now that I've set it to DVCPRO 1080i60 (which I assume is correct), I'm still not able to establish a connection to the camera, and the DV OUTPUT menu choice is still grayed out... In fact, shouldn't HDV/DV light up before I've even selected log & capture?by davko - Café LA can't establish firewire connection - 16 years agoUpon trying to capture HD video from a Canon HV20, the highlighted camera menu selection (HDV/DV) disappears as soon as the fire wire is connected to it. This occurs no matter what order I do things; i.e., turn on the computer, select "log & capture," or connect the devices (I've tried every combination). Could this problem have anything to do with FCP (I have V6.0) not recogniby davko - Café LA Re: file size discrepancy - 16 years agoSorry, guys. Appears I didn't self-contain the earlier ones. That would explain it.by davko - Café LA file size discrepancy - 16 years agoWhile on the subject of exporting, I just created a Quicktime (.mov file) from a little 3-minute video that resulted in a file size of 660 MB. This is at great variance with one I recently created for a 22-minute film that had far more visual effects, yet only resulted in a file size of 249 MB. I checked the Codecs, bit rates, and dimensions of both in the info box, and they're identical. Wby davko - Café LA Re: clip disappearance - 16 years agoI accidently had 2 drives activated for capture-scratch to this project, then shut off the one I didn't want. Would this affect EXISTING media in any way, even if it was captured to the deactivated drive? Or do those capture settings need to stay put as long as I'm in that project?by davko - Café LA Re: clip disappearance - 16 years agoAs this seems to be an isolated problem (involving one piece of film in one area), I've simply replaced it and moved on. Questions: - Is it possible to delete a clip and have a "ghost" of it reappear on start-up? - I messed around with capture scratch settings just before all this happened, in order to direct future captures to another drive. This wouldn't affect any existing coby davko - Café LA Re: clip disappearance - 16 years agoOkay, this is getting scary. I open the project, and the clip in question shows up in the timeline. But as soon as I click on it -- or anything else for that matter -- it disappears without a trace. Now I can't even get it to scrub. Luckily, by not saving the project, I can retrieve its timeline position (in "phantom" mode) each time I launch. Making a copy of the sequence doby davko - Café LA clip disappearance - 16 years agoClips in my project are suddenly vanishing mysteriously, even when I'm working elsewhere in the timeline. Scrubbing the area where one exisited sometimes indicates a "phantom" clip is still there, but playing the sequence at regular speed produces nothing. Do I need to trash my preferences AGAIN? It's only been a few weeks. Or is this indicative of something else?by davko - Café LA Re: can't import full DVD extraction - 16 years agoThanks, I'll proceed accordingly. Just curious, though: Why can I grab 30 seconds worth of material per file, seemingly with no impediments?by davko - Café LA can't import full DVD extraction - 16 years agoI've used Mac the Ripper to do a full (2 GB) disc extraction, but when I attempt to import the .VOB files into FCP, I only get 30 seconds of each file's content. I've attempted to bring in every .VOB file that exists in the folder, but still can't find the content I need. What could be causing this?by davko - Café LA can't trash unwanted media - 16 years agoSomehow, I managed to duplicate media files on a backup drive, which I now cannot delete because a popup message tells me "backup items can't be modifed." Did Time Machine have something to do with this? What's the solution?by davko - Café LA can't apply filter globally - 16 years agoWhile able to apply a "de-interlace filter" to the upper (default) field of an entire video track, is there a way to change the default to the lower field, so I don't have to go clip by clip? Changing this setting in FILTERS for one clip does not change it for all, even when I select the entire track.by davko - Café LA unreadable projects - 16 years agoWith recurring frequency, I've been encountering the message "The project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut" upon opening a project. I've changed nothing on my computer or the FCP version I'm using (6.0). This problem was reported by another user in March, and not addressed.by davko - Café LA Re: can't fix frame size - 16 years agoInfo and links answer all my questions, and then some. Don't know how I missed it. Many thanks.by davko - Café LA can't fix frame size - 16 years agoOther than fixing it in MOTION, isn't there a way to bring in an "unsqueezed" Quick-time movie that was shot in 16:9 and copied to disc as a .mov file? The clip plays in a 4:3 aspect ratio, whether I view off the disc or import into FCP after saving it to a folder containing my other media clips. Curiously, the thumbnail is letterboxed (probably to the very proportions the clip itsby davko - Café LA capture scratch query - 16 years agoWhat's the recommended minimum allowable free space on a 1 gb disc?by davko - Café LA Re: image "stutters" on some players (monitors?) - 16 years agoIt's looking more and more like de-interlacing is the culprit, but thanks for the compressor info and tips on DVD's. Incidentally, do I have to remove a filter clip by clip, or is there some global way to do it, since it's been applied to the entire sequence?by davko - Café LA Re: image "stutters" on some players (monitors?) - 16 years agoThe problem occurred on ultra-new equipment, so I'm not sure it's the same problem. But I'll try using a lower encoding bit rate, as you suggest. How does one do this within FCP -- by changing the Record selection in Playback Control from "full quality" to "playback settings?" or by changing Master Templates and Motion Projects in User Preferences to a lower quality? Orby davko - Café LA Re: image "stutters" on some players (monitors?) - 16 years agoYes -- flat screen, high-def. Would you agree that a de-interlaced version of the cut exacerbates the problem; i.e., would it have made any difference had I not used the filter? (unfortunately I didn't have a back-up of the latter on hand to find out).by davko - Café LA image "stutters" on some players (monitors?) - 16 years agoEvery now and then, I'll play a perfectly good disc of my cut on someone else's DVD player, and the picture skips and jumps horribly, especially during horizontal pans. I suspect it might have something to do with the de-interlacing filter I've applied, but why does it play fine in some situations and not others? If hi-def equipment is the culprit, are there any settings that can be changed toby davko - Café LA Re: rendering corrupts project - 16 years agoThey occur pretty arbitrarily; i.e., a section of dialogue corrupts against a single corresponding video, and a section of music just goes silent, in spite of being present in the timeline. Altogether, I'm running 4 video trks, but only using 3 & 4 once (for titling). Could this be one of those occasions for trashing preferences?by davko - Café LA Re: the film look - 16 years agoMany thanks for the suggestions. There's a plethora out there -- if you happen to know of one or two that stand out, it'll help narrow down my choices. Otherwise, I'll just pick one that looks good.by davko - Café LA rendering corrupts project - 16 years agoTwice now I've rendered a finished project, only to experience major sound dropouts, scrambled audio, and shots completely out of sync (in the same places both times). In some instances, proper waveforms in the timeline arbitrarily go silent. Everything seemed fine prior to rendering. What's going on here?by davko - Café LA the film look - 16 years agoIs there any simple way to convert a timeline to 24P -- faux or real -- or otherwise "dirty up" the look of a project so it appears more filmic? (Source material was shot on mini-DV, standard def.)by davko - Café LA problem solved - 16 years agoI had my real-time mixing preferences set too low -- 4 tracks instead of 8.by davko - Café LA audio levels jump on cuts - 16 years agoAfter keyframing a music track to blend with narration & FX, it doesn't play through at the right volume, even after rendering. Instead, I get bursts of loudness and other sudden changes in audio levels as the playhead encounters various cut points. What's going on here?by davko - Café LA Re: imperfect mute controls - 16 years agoYou're not kidding. I discovered this on my own while awaiting a reply, and it seemed so obvious, I figured there had to be something wrong with it. Instead, it solved the problem perfectly. It makes me wonder why they've even got mute buttons in the first place, as they not only have performance and rendering issues, but seem to be redundant and thus confusing. Many thanks.by davko - Café LA Re: imperfect mute controls - 16 years agoDidn't seem to help. Specifically, here's what happens: I try playing the section I wish to hear without music using the mute buttons on the music tracks. As the playhead encounters a new track layer -- a fill track in this case -- the music bleeds through at that point. A similar problem occurs if I try to play that fill track by itself using the solo buttons; music (and even dialogue!) bleby davko - Café LA |
