I've never installed it because first I had to wait to buy FCP 5.x, and I still have yet to buy Logic Pro 7 upgrade from 6 and I've had one project started in 4.5 that has been hogging all the space on the drive I bought intending to be used as a Tiger boot disk. I am sending away for the crossgrade to 5.1, the upgrade to Logic 7, and they'll probablyby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: New to FCP... set up questions - 17 years agoQuoteJude CotterThe grey ones are SP Beta, yellow ones are SX Beta, and blue ones are Digibeta There's a gotcha here though as SX format can be recorded onto any of the Beta tape stocks. Good dubbing houses will put an SX sticker on tapes that are done like this but camera tapes from the field don't always do it. And it's unlikely you are getting vanilla, non-SP Beta as it's pretty rare butby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: online "wish list" - 17 years agoI would guess he's referring a more conventional on-line situation where the online is being done in another non-FCP system and the only interchange is an EDL and box of tapes for a new operator. This "Effects EDL" is really just editors notes with timecode so the on-line operator would know exactly where you had an effect and why. You can include filter info in the EDL already but itby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: Does RE-SYNC-ing Multiclips reflect in your timeline?? - 17 years agoI'll agree with Nicks assesment of multiclips. There are all sorts of hard to track little quirks with multiclips that are hard to explain to people who aren't using them and because there are a few significantly different methods of cutting with multiclips even other multiclip users won't run into the same issues. One we run into frequently is that a multiclip has the pixel dimensions/pixelby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: exporting MPEG4 video with MP3 audio - 17 years agoYou'll get more audio options if you chose quicktime conversion from FCP and under the Quicktime Movie options there is a selection for mpg4 video. There isn't an audio selection for mp3 there but I could have sworn there used to be in v4. I can check on an old system I have at home. I'd be curious as to where your clients got their info from. Good stuff to know if it's true. akby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: How to save a turkey and still enjoy Thanksgiving - 17 years agoTurkey is turkey. In a pot pie, in a sandwich, still turkey. You might make it taste a little better but it's still turkey. I wouldn't look at filters to save your bird. It will be in the cutting and the choice of non picture elements. Music, narration, the overall quality of sound. If there's ever going to be any improvement on your turkey that's where it's going to come from. You have to turn that on first before you get Title safe or Timecode overlays. akby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: No Video Message - 17 years agoIf you had one device like your GL1 to get video into your Mac those settings are what you want. Firewire NTSC is the mode by which FCP controls your deck and what video standard it uses (NTSC or PAL) and DV NTSC 48 Khz is what you want if you are capturing run of the mill DV footage with 48 Khz audio. However you say you have 2 devices for capturing. Are they both always hooked up? Are theyby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD 720 24P - 17 years agoCould FCP 4.x even handle polyphonic audio files? I thought everything was restricted to 2 channels in QT6/FCP4. If you have a FCP4 manual it might clear that up. Could be wrong as I never had more than a stereo pair coming into FCP 4. If this is the case you'll have to parse the audio out as separate tracks and bring them in to FCP as individual files to be relinked to the video. But I woby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: FCP EDLs still shakey - 17 years agoHaven't gone through all dissolves but 4 episodes in to the season, all we've been using is the dips to colour and no speed changes. The assistants had been pretty good at using "omit transitions" in the EDL export but one got through and I had to figure out what was wrong. I did a few tests with simple dissolves and dips to colour and every example threw off the EDL. It always aby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: FCP EDLs still shakey - 17 years agoProbably. If by that you mean EDLs, dissolves, and FCP. I know that EDLs can contain dissolves and still be accurate because I've seen it, but never in FCP generated EDLs. Just kinda hoped they had worked it out in the last few updates and one major upgrade, guess not. akby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: Intel Quad chips - 17 years agoI agree with you Kevin. I did some pro bono work recently for a PhD student who was delivering a DVD along with her final thesis. The DVD had 75 different bits of video and 10 menus. I was able to do high quality compressor batches and clean up menus in Photoshop and prep in DVDSP all on one of their media lab Intel iMacs. They each had 500MB RAM. If only Qmaster was a useable application I couby Andrew Kines - Café LA FCP EDLs still shakey - 17 years agoNo question just an FYI. We're running 5.1.2 doing a 23.976 offline and conforming in HD. Our EDLs have been pretty clean so far but they're still tossing up errors around dissolves. Dips to Colour to be exact. Sends the incoming clip's TC off by, so far, up to 10 seconds. Maybe by 6.0 they'll have this EDL thing figured out. Till then it's remove everything that's not a straight cut and seby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: Mixer control surfaces - 17 years agoThanks Derek I never use those buttons on the side either. I often use clip enable/disable as a demo of something you can't do in other NLEs. OK one other NLE, not sure about Premiere Pro or Vegas. I use that functionality all day every day. That and clip solo (control-s). I need to get a new one for my Logic audio set up and while it's not a deal killer I wouldn't mind using it to add some simplicity to doing basic mixes in FCP. The project I have been working on for the past while has led to sequences with up to 16 tracks at a time and I have found that one limitation of FCP isby Andrew Kines - Café LA Re: BWF synch question - 17 years ago3 questions 1 How were the files recorded? (no. of tracks, Frame rate, TC etc) 2 How were the files imported? (Software, settings etc) 3 What is our software versions and CPU/RAM/drive set up? Details details details please. In the help menu you need to look for an option called bwf2qt. Make sure you have checked all your preferences like it says. The shortcut for bwf2qt is apple-4, once the dialogue is open you can shift-click to select more than one file for conversion. BUT, I teach basic FCP skills once or twice a year to "New Media" students and beginners at an artists Video co-op. How does recapturing work? How does a bounce to AE and back look? There is something to be said for not processing your footage any more than you have to, especially with HDV. Some people on here won't touch the format with a fully extended boom pole and others love it. Because AI is not a temporal compression scheme it would likely be better for bouncing around between edit and mograph applications. Then there's the issue of HDV actually referring to a number of variations produced by different manufacturers all using the same name but no being cross compatible. Not a bad idea if you have the time to crunch the mpg2 and the ac3. Do what what filmman says, leaving out the superfluous LOL's and smileys. And don't bother doing the AIFF render as it will be too big. Our current audio ops send a scratch mix wirelessly to camera and while we have never had to rely on it, when ever I have listened to it it's crap quality. Barely useable for sync. It's pretty low on a long list of things we need to fix. Would audioTC HAVE to be a hard patch? I'll try that tonight after I go through the manual. Does anyone know what the asterisk in the title bar of the PSD file means? It's beside RGB and a backslash I think. When I imported it into DVDSP it came in as a "QuickTime Picture". I double checked the properties of the document 720x480, .9 Pixel aspect ratio everything seemed fine but when I selected it as background for the Menu it gave me no layers. The software Andreas mentioned that does that is called Time:tools. The major task of BWF2XML is to convert BWF files to FCP readable files. You can set it to make those 4k reference files that you mentioned or it can be set to create complete .mov versions of the BWF files.
