At the LAFCPUG meeting last night there was a demo of a new, standalone product called "Traffic". Here's the URL to check it out: Drawing on the concept of "node based editing", this program takes an entirely different approach to working with FCP. Using the XML export feature, you export a sequence, project, or bin, to "Traffic".by mark raudonis - Café LA Re: automated transcribing - 18 years agoI'm sure the CIA has some super secret stuff that they use for snooping on cell phone calls, but for us mere mortals, the picken's are slim. It's not that there are cheap programs out there... it's just that the requirements for what you're trying to do are extremely difficult to automate. Type "Speech recognition software" into google and you'll get over 11 million references. Thatby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Adding Internal Drives to G5 - 18 years agoBrad, You're G-5 can easily take a second internal drive. Take the time to read the manual and you will see if the five drives sitting on your shelf are compatible. My guess is that they're not. There are companies that make kits so that you can squeeze up to a terrabyte of ATA drives into your G-5. Do a search and you'll find them. I am the destroyer, plea - 18 years agomark, I think you win the award for most interesting subject line of the month! You may want to try doing a clean install. Sounds like you've got some serious issues here. Good luck. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: the key to Keyboards - 18 years agofrank, We bought the Logickey custom keycaps keyboards for all of our FCP systems. I think they're around $120 bucks for a whole keyboard, and $65 just for the keys. If you're doing just one, you may want to just get the caps. This is the same keyboard that the G5 ships with, it just has the colored caps on it. I'm happy with it. If you're looking at more than a few, save yourself the hby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Small rack - 18 years agoShane, This is what just about every Avid rental house uses: They ain't cheap, but they're built like a tank and last forever. Ask for KC Najarian. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Jumpdrives/DVD + CDRW recommendations - 18 years agoAs for the jumpdrives.... they've become a commodity with little to separate the brands other than capacity. You're probably going to lose it before it breaks, so go for the most bang for the buck. I've probably bought a hundred of them for our staff (all different brands) and I can't tell any difference. Get whatever's on sale. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT: Katrina slide show - 18 years agoThis is the future of journalism: A single person, unencumbered by the traditions and "heavy baggage" of the mainstream media, able to have their voice heard world wide. If their story is interesting enough, people will find it. Great pictures. Great words. Anyone remember "Life" magazine? Felt like that. Yahoo just announced a deal with a seasoned journalist to do juby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Laundry List for Edit suite - 18 years agoKirk, Same problem. The data rates for HD are coming down to the point where you really don't need anything all that special. You can probably make more money just renting the empty room (real estate) than you can trying to make a go of it with this kind of system. Pencil it out. The point where you can make a profit is exactly the point where most people say, "Naw... The simple fact is that FCP is cheap and everyone knows it. Good luck trying to make a profit running a single off-line room. Anyone who has a serious project with a budget attached can afford to BUY their own system. Everyone else will essentially be asking you to give it to themby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Motion Traking Pin plugin advice - 18 years agoDear Mr. Wanker, "looks nice but it is a bit on the pricey side". What did you expect? Free? If you're using FCP to as a professional tool and you're expecting professional results, you can expect to pay for it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: FCP Article?Sorta: Final Touch - 18 years agoSilicon Color's "Final Touch" software was demonstrated at Terry Curren's "Alpha Dogs" Editor's Lounge last week. While their main focus is obviously DI on feature films, they have a "Standard Def" version that's only $995. This basically puts a Davinci on your FCP system. Sure you need a specific grfx card (Radeon 9800) and lots of RAM, but the software is EXby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Pre roll - 18 years agoPhil, This is a basic feature of FCP. Has been since early on. Click on "help" in the tool bar and look for "FCP Manual". Then search for the chapter labeled "Output". All your questions will be answered there. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: offline-online conforming - 18 years agoYour DV off-line tapes SHOULD have been made with matching timecode, both in the burned in window and on the timecode track. You need to confirm that this is the case. If so, then follow the media management steps mentioned above. Essentially, you are redigitizing only the media referenced in the timeline, using the Digibetas as your new source material. That's the theory. The practice isby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: offline-online conforming - 18 years agoJeff, It would be wise NOT to expect this process to go flawlessly on autopilot!!! There are significant issues with FCP when onlining any "speed changes" done in the off-line cut. Without knowing what your off-line looks like, it's hard to predict where the pitfalls will occur. But, be prepared. They WILL occur. I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but be realistic about tby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: editor's tool kits - 18 years agoDave, You're right on the money! I would also add to your list the fine art of color correction. More and more on-line "finishing" editors are expected to be competent colorists as well. For many projects, a DaVinci session is out of the question, so what ever "fixes" need to be done will be done by the editor, not a dedicated colorist. For example, if you're in commercials, you'll probably want to just include five to ten of your best commercials. If you do features, you'd want to just send a DVD of the entire film, since overall flow and character development are important. I work in reality TV and I receiveby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Chroma - 18 years agoWe use the "Ultimatte" plug in with FCP. It's expensive ($1,500. approx), but is really an awesome keyer. One click any you're done. If you're looking for a crisp and clean key, this will do it... and quick! Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: reading avid bins in fcp - 18 years agoI don't think this is possible. There are some conversion programs like Automatic Duck which can translate sequences back and forth, but to my knowledge, not bins. Perhaps if you described why you're trying to do this, someone can suggest a workaround for you. One displays a g-5, the other a PC. Make sure the video card inside your PC can drive that display. I think mine is a Radeon. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: I think I hate Avid (stupid rant) - 18 years agoJustin, I'm assuming that you're serious and sincere. (not just taking controversial stance) It's refreshing to hear the other side of the coin! I'd invite you to come speak to our staff (veteran Avid editors recently converted to FCP), but I can't afford the hospital bills you'd incur! I think a NLE preference is largely based on what you "grew up with". Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Photo Jpeg Multiclip - 18 years agoJosh, We're using the multiclip function with off-line RT media (photojpeg) all the time. In our case the frame size is actually half the 720 x 480, but I don't think that makes a difference. Have you had success using the multiclip with other resolutions? What are you doing differently with the photo jpeg codec? Try confirming your procedure with a different setting (DV NTSC for example), tby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Studio set-up advice... - 18 years ago{I tried offlining in PhotoJPEG. Forget it.} Loren, While it may not be your preference to work in off-line RT, don't be so quick to condemn it. In many cases, where the ammount of footage is atronomical, off-line RT is the only practical option. For example, on many of the reality shows that we do, our shooting ratio can be higher than 300-1. That translates to over 3,500 hours of materialby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Timecode Burn - 18 years agoEasier way? Three clicks is too difficult? This is the dumbest comment I've heard all week! All of our editors make "real money" and more. Guess what? The time we spend cutting a show hasn''t changed at all from when we had Avids. We spend more time "thinking" than pushing buttons, so even if your 30% figure was true (which it isnt), we've seby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: One hundred Fcp system ? - 18 years agoFrancois & Sean, We've been using X-SAN since last year. First in a beta form, then in public release. Here's a reference to what we've been upto on the apple website. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Reasons to switch from Avid to FCP? - 18 years agoUh, last time I checked, Burbank IS in the San Fernando Valley! These platform wars really sound like "Coke" versus "Pepsi". Everyday the differences between the two become more and more subtle. Eventually it just comes down to which taste do you prefer. For the record, over a year ago we switched from an all Avid house to an all FCP x-SAN setup and haven't looked backby mark raudonis - Café LA |
