We are currently using X-SAN with close to one hundred FCP systems sharing more than 40 terrabytes of data. This is a rather complex installation that isn't cheap. Go to the Apple website and look up X-SAN. They have a very thorough explanation of what it is and how to set iby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: "Find in bin" - button? - 17 years agoGwI, There's also the the ability to "reveal in finder". If for example you've accessed a clip from another project and that bin doesn't live in your project, then you can "right click" on the clip and select "Reveal in Finder". THis will open up the mac finder level window and show you the path to where the actual clip lives. This is incredible helpful if yoby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Monitoring widescreen LCD? - 17 years agoRalph, Do a google search for "Marshall Electronics". They make a whole line of pro monitors that fit your needs. Be warned though, they aren't cheap! Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: META Data - 17 years agoRob, In a word: No! The only metadata recorded on a DV tape would be timecode. If you're clever, you can throw reel numbers into the userbits, but that's about it. The kind of info you're asking about (shutter speed, focal length, whitebalance, etc.) is NEVER recorded in the DV format. At best you can create your own database to track this info, but that would require a tremendous effort aby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: using final cut pro as an online suite - 17 years agoDo you have a client looking over your shoulder? If the answer is yes, you may not be happy with the lack of RT performance in FCP. If you're less concerned about clients, and your workflow can absorb the time differance, then it may work for you. Just keep in mind what you're comparing. Can it work? Yes. Will it be right for you? Only you can answer that. This is less a technical queby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Upgrade to 5 in middle of project? - 17 years agoUnless you have to.... then, be very careful and very aware that all may not go as planned. For us, we did a wholesale migration from 4.5 to the latest 5.02. (at least 25 systems) We just never have a window where we're not in the middle of a project, and we REALLY wanted to use the multi-clip function. Yes, we had some shows in progress. Yes, we had some minor problems. However, by and largeby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Networking - 17 years agoGig e will definitely work for limited circumstances. Playing media across a gig e connection depends on the bandwidth of the media you're trying to push. We regularly use gig e to watch off-line Rt cuts and QT movies. We don't do this with full res media, so I can't say if it works for that. The further up the bandwidth scale you go, the less good your results will be. Mr. MillerTV1, Don't know who you're talking to, but I'd be happy to share with you our experience with X-SAN and FCP. We now have close to one hundred FCP systems all connected to X-SAN, sharing storage, sharing media, moving projects around. Make no mistake, X-SAN is not a "plug and play" amateur installation. We're experiencing some weirdness when grouping all of this material together. Syncing is done by "in point" but when the newly created clip is cut into the timeline, only the first few seconds of multitrack audio show up, with the rest of the duration blank. The video performs as expected butby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Drop Frame or Non Drop Frame? - 17 years agoDF vs NDF is perhaps one of the most confusing concepts to grasp. First of all, the frame rate in NTSC is the exact same whether you're using DF or NDF. NTSC Video plays at one speed only and that's 29.97 fps. When SMPTE developed TC, at first it was only available in NDF... assigning one unique number to each frame.
