I like the visual concept of putting "LAFCPUG" around the world, but how about a little love for Los Angeles? Don't get me wrong. It's a great picture, and when I visited Sydney, I actually took a piby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Took the plunge - 15 years agoerik, Welcome. My only advice for you is to allow yourself the time to feel comfortable on FCP before you really need to use it in a pressure cooker session. It's kind of like learning a foreign language. They say you're not truly fluent until you start "thinking" in that new language. Once you start "dreaming" in it, you know you've got it. Same is true with this &qby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OMF workflow question - 15 years agoI agree with Shane on this. It's a false economy to think that you're "getting a head start" by starting audio before picture lock. You ultimately will spend more time (and money) with this workflow than waiting until final lock. Ok. Having said that, unfortunately, we deal with this situation all the time. There are some specific steps you can take to "minimize" the paiby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: online file hosting - 15 years agoGood, and free? Let me know when you find it. Meanwhile, there's .mac for only about a hundred bucks a year. It's good and cheap, but not free. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Multiclip sequence to color - 15 years agoYou're basically going back to the original media. You're "un multi clipping the clip", therefore, whatever media was there before will be available. Quick synopsis? Sure: Matchframe back to original clip. Replace multiclip with "original media". You're done. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Multiclip sequence to color - 15 years agoYou can do that, but have you tried "replacing" the footage? Once you start doing it and get into a rhythm it goes pretty quick. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Multiclip sequence to color - 15 years agoJeff, You don't say which version of FCP you're using. If you're on the latest version, then your experience is NOT unique. We've discovered that media manager, with respect to multiclips, seems to be broken. It is NOT shedding the unused media in a multiclip. The only workaround we've found is to actually replace the "multiclip" with the original media. That's right. Matchfby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Phony FireWire event - 15 years agoIf you've got to have your cell phone near or next to your drives/edit system, wrap it in tinfoil. Seriously! Try it. Tinfoil off... you can hear the "click, click, click..." of the signal pulses. Tinfoil on.... it's silent. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid and FCP offline workflow... - 15 years agoDepends on the size of the shot! To answer your question, it's never THAT bad. A well shot, well lit image is "good enough" to work with. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Reconnect multiple files not working - 15 years agoThis was a known bug in earlier versions. What software version are you using? If the answer is "not the latest" then upgrade. There is no other workaround. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid and FCP offline workflow... - 15 years agoNo, we haven't tried that. Increasing the quality increases the size of the files... kinda defeats the purpose. With off-line, you know it's gonna look like crap, so we just deal with it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid and FCP offline workflow... - 15 years agoWell, since you mentioned my name... here's my thoughts. You have to have a VERY good reason to want to use Off-line RT. Ours can be summed up with two words: Bandwidth and storage. Because we have so many systems networked together, we simply don't have the bandwidth available to push around 500 streams of uncompressed SD or even DVCPRO HD throughout the building. If you bring an expensive camera along on a trip, you're never going to use it. For me, smaller is better. I've got a canon digital SLR with interchangeable lenses, but the little pocket camera is the one that usually gets the most use on a trip. On a consumer level, the "hard drive" type cameras may present "compatibilityby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: GTech drives - 15 years ago"Hard drives fail...just a matter of when." This is why they invented RAID schemes. All drives WILL fail. Yes, it sucks when YOUR drive dies, but I don't think your experience is all that unusual. Just ask around about LACIE firewire drives. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Which Training course for an Avid editor - 15 years agoI can't say enough good things about Diana Weynand. When we were transitioning from Avid to FCP over three years ago, we hired her to come in and train our entire staff. We had over a hundred people go through her course, and it was a tremendous help. She wrote a book titled, "Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors" which explained the differences between the two programs using terms that aby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Number of clips before FCP 6 slowdown? - 15 years ago"i was "importing" the files from the capture scratch of one project into the new project and the metadata (shot/scene/take) did not seem to come with it" It seems that you're caught on the idea that a project must contain BOTH the media and the sequence... it doesn't. If you can break that notion, and just think of the ENTIRE mac file structure as one big project, it mayby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Number of clips before FCP 6 slowdown? - 15 years agoOk. You're wrong. The secret to making FCP work is to play to it's strengths, and not it's weaknesses. One of it's strengths is the ability to use the basic mac file structure to organize your project. It would be foolish trying put all of your media into one project when that simply isn't necessary. You can easily have multiple projects open simultaneously. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: converting 16:9 FHA to 4:3 in FCP - 15 years ago(does anyone air SD in 16:9?) Well, yes, as a matter of fact they do. Probably 50% of what we do ends up letter boxed 16 x 9 SD. This is for MTV, Spike, Lifetime, and various other cable networks. " If it's HDCAM sr, yes, it can! The HDCAM sr deck costs around $100K. It takes at least 2 of them to make a dub. But... the product itself is EOL (end of life). No further improvements will be made. Apple is migrating many of the features found in Shake to Motion. Example: Stabilizing image. If you're JUST looking for a keyer, have you looked at "Ultimatte: Advantage"? Here's the url: It ain't cheap, but it truly does generate the best "automatic" keys I've ever seen. We went to a from a 1080 capture to a 720p timeline to do aspect ratio coversion. That worked well for video, but doing that destroyed the 3:2 cadence. When we checked the "unaltered" 4 x 3 version, the 3 :2 was OK. Lesson learned! Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Cadence conundrum: Can't seem to pass through 2:3 - 15 years ago(cross posted to Cow and "L"... I really need help!) Here's the problem: We have a documentary that needs a "film out". Original shot on DV 24p. Editing was done @ 29.97 through out. Bumped up to HDCAM for color correct... 2:3 cadence was still present. Had to make changes, so redigitized the color corrected HDCAM master (1080i). We've gone from two hour renders for h.264 outputs to like six minutes. Really! Sure there's some quirks in the set up, and it occasionally has to be "reset", but going "distributed" has saved us countless hours of "babysitting" output renders.
