If your workflow requires and EDL, reel names longer than six characters often get truncated when creating an EDL. So be careful there too. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Questions on shared storage - 15 years agoYou're missing the hand holding that a well versed reseller can give you. Unless you know what you're doing, don't just try to buy this stuff off the shelf and expect it to be plug and play.... it isn't. There are plenty of resellers out there that can give you a proper demo of this kind of set up. This will save you countless hours of frustration . Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Questions on shared storage - 15 years agoTravis, Start your research here: As for the media via ethernet, you don't specifiy what resolution (DV, HD, 4K etc) that you're planning on using. The size of the files makes a huge difference as to what and how you can share. Jackson's correct that ethernet is just barely able to handle most media on a regular basis. However, we use "Off-line RT" which is a very low bandby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Questions on shared storage - 15 years agoJackson, While you're technically correct for a large install, it seems like Travis has much more modest ambitions. It sounds like he just wants to tie together TWO CPU's with shared storage. This is a much easier, cheaper goal. Keep in mind, this only works for TWO. Once you go to three or more, THEN you get into all of the more elaborate solutions. So... if you just want to tie togetby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: multicam editing with Frankenstein clips - 15 years ago"On a side note- just out of curiosity- is it, well, unprofessional to have 2 guys on a shoot shooting different resolutions, frame rates, etc.? " I think you've answered your own question. DUH! Yes, it's stupid to be recording different resolutions and frame rates for a common production. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT - where is iphoto??? - 15 years agoSorry to crap in your cornflakes, but iPhoto is part of iLife... pay up. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Transitional templates - 15 years ago"it can never be taken seriously as a broadcast editing platform until it does." Ooops! Too late. It already IS taken seriously as a broadcast editing platform. Not all broadcast tv relies upon style in place of story. Markby mark raudonis - Motion Re: HD MONITORING/SONY SD MONITOR - 15 years agoBy the way... that HD SDI board is now more expensive than the whole monitor when new. Since Sony doesn't make 'em anymore, your only choice is ebay. Those boards are now going for $2-$3500. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Compressor 3 Multi-Core Trick - 15 years agoCompressor is the unsung hero of FCP Studio 2. You're essentially talking about distributed rendering to each of the chips in your single computer. For anyone with several of many computers on a network it gets even better! We've set up Compressor to tap into ALL of the computers on our network. For h.264 movies of an hour in length (which we post to the web for review and approval) we've gby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: What flavor of HD should we teach with? - 15 years ago"Also, what versions of HD should our students be aware of to prepare them for real world experience?" In my opinion, the best advice you can give students about HD is that it's an evolving format. There are many more HD possibilities than there ever was with Standard Def. Students should be aware that no longer is there just one flavor of video. Rather, there will be many differeby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day - 15 years agoThis is the one day a year that I'll do some shameless self-promotion. All you buccaneers out there with wee little scallywags (I'm talking 6years old and younger) listen up. No pirates library is complete without a copy of "Shiver me letters! A Pirate's ABC's". This wonderfully illustrated book teaches your little pirates the ABC's in a way that only a proud pirate parent coulby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: I need help with Render Farms - 15 years agoRob, If you're thinking that a render farm will benefit the FCP process directly, the answer is no. However, we have a rather large set up (100 systems) and we regularly harness distributed rendering by using Compressor. Unfortunately, this does nothing for effects, but it screams when it comes to H.264 compressing for the web. We've gone from hours down to six minutes (really!). As forby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: FCP crashed and now my file is missing! - 15 years agoAfter you finish praying, take a moment to save to an external media like a USB "thumb drive". You are nuts if you have your project saved in only one location. Since it seems like you're a student (Univ of Florida) I'll go easy on ya. If you were a professional I'd have no sympathy for practicing unsafe computing. We require our editors to save every night to three places: Loby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Backup suggestions? What do people use? - 15 years agoAs drives get bigger and the amount of media to be backed up grows, the challenge becomes how to back up economically from both a money perspective and a TIME perspective. We're regularly running nearly 50 terrabytes of data that's changing on a daily basis. I have yet to find a back up solution that is BOTH cost effective and time efficient. It's like that old saying, "Good. Fast. Cheaby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Mixing 16:9 anamorphic and non-anamorphic - 15 years agoYour DVX100 SD material is essentially "squeezed". If you're shooting HD, then the normal aspect ratio is 16 x9. Both should match. If however you are recording to SD DV, then I'd suggest you choose "Squeeze" so that all your SD material matches. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Remote Truck (OB Van) in a Laptop! - 15 years agoYou don't! You add a second firewire card. We're using a G5 NOT a powerbook. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Remote Truck (OB Van) in a Laptop! - 15 years agoKoz, Try this: I've used it to take firewire inputs from four cameras, do green screen keys with FX like lower thirds, chyrons etc. You can "roll in" clips as if they were from tape... and compress and go out live to the web. In short, there isn't much that this program can't do. It's available for both mac and PC. Did I mention that it's only $445.? That's quite a bitby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid files in Final Cut Pro? - 15 years ago"A lot of reality television and documentaries work seem to be the greatest offenders, but it's pretty much everywhere." Ok, now you're talking about something I know a little bit about, and I think you're just plain wrong! When did "narrative fiction" become the ONLY place where "real" editing occurs? You can dump on reality TV all you want, but let's get someby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid files in Final Cut Pro? - 15 years ago"Editing, unfortunately, has become an ancillary part of post production. " Tom, I gotta say that your "definition" of editing is narrow, limiting, and a bit elitist. (artistically arrogant?) Thatby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Can XSan only work with XRAID? - 15 years agoYes, X-SAN will work with other "Non Apple" storage. But, the burden would now be on YOU, not Apple to troubleshoot and resolve any "3rd party" conflicts/incompatibilities. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: FCP6 media wackiness - 15 years agoAndrew, What version of FCP are you on? We had the "ballooning project size" issue way back when multiclip was first introduced. (Ver. 4.5 I think?) Subsquent updates seemed to cure that and we haven't seen this issue in awhile. Definitely used to be an issue, but not for awhile. markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: FCP for news gathering - 15 years ago"The second major reason is, and probably the most important one, is FCP's inability to work well in a large, shared environment. That's changing too." Changing? Changed. Three years ago. Just takes awhile for people to notice. markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: GREEN SCREENING - 15 years ago"I stopped installing it on my seats of FCP " Since ver 4.5, Ultimatte has NOT worked well with FCP. We've found it to be rather unpredicatable, therefore, we use it in AE, where it's awesome. Yes, it's expensive ($1,500 I think) but if you do a lot of green screens (like we do) it's worth every penny. Just wish they got it to work well in FCP again. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Vid Rate Question (59.94fps vs. 23.98fps) - 15 years agoJosh, There's so many questions here. Let's start with this: Are you doing a "film out"? If the answer is no, then shut up about "23.98". Most video cameras that shoot at "24p", actually record to tape in something known as "24 over 60"...which means that anyone in video land can actually deal with the tapes. I'm guessing that your DP shot in 2by mark raudonis - Café LA Re: GREEN SCREENING - 15 years agoUltimatte in after Effects can't be beat. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Re Capture Footage that was digitized using Capture Now - 15 years agoAmy, No sympathy here. You're asking if you can have your cake and eat it too. Sorry. There's no substitute for accurate logging and capture. If you took the short cut of capture now, as you're finding out, there are consquences. There have been ton's of posts on this topic. There may even be a FAQ about it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Hunting down a corrupt media file - 15 years agoThis definitely sounds like your drive is dying... not a project corruption issue. The project can't open because it can't read the files on the drive. You don't say if this drive is external or not, or even if it's separate from the system drive (which it should be). If it is external, disconnect it. Then try opening your project. That should help you determine that this is a drive issueby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Backing up Media files - 15 years agoor do a google search on "auto back up software" Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: How do I set up a basic network for FCP? - 15 years agoAlan, There are many choices available to set up your "mini network". It all comes down to how much you want to spend and what kind of performance you need. On the high end there's Apple's "X-SAN". It can scale from three systems to 64 systems with many, many terrabytes of data, but it's NOT cheap and a little complex to set up. On the low (or simple to use) end, tby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: a dumb question i shouldnt have to ask... - 15 years agoI'm with Nick... more systems, the better! We're regularly using 10 to 20 systems a night to simultaneously capture media. Unless you're on P2 or Sony XDAM, it's the only way to break the "real time" barrier. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA |
