Therefore, any entry is "tagged with timecode" with a single key stroke. If you're manually typing in TC numbers, you're living in the stone age! Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Have some fun with this post. - 16 years agoIf you DON'T have a dedicated machine room, "Quiet boxes" are very effective in isolating and reducing the ambient noise in the room. Definitely worth the money. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Can I use FCP with Unity Drives? - 16 years agoNo way to add one? It's only around $500 bucks... and the fibre cable. In the networked workflow, there is no free lunch. If you want connectivity, you're gonna have to pony up for it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Which chroma key software? - 16 years agoWe use "Ultimatte: Advantage" It ain't cheap (Around $1,500), but it's the best we've found for cleaning up "poor setups". Another choice would be SHAKE $499. from Apple, but it has a steep learning curve and is EOL. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Can I use FCP with Unity Drives? - 16 years agoI cross posted this on the Avid-L2 and got this response: There's no reason the drives couldn't be converted to shared storage through a utility program like SanMP. Volume-level locking is easy. You wouldn't get the full function that a Unity would provide, but it would save your investment in hardware, for what it's worth. April Fool! markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Input for voiceover tool?? - 17 years agothis one gets good nods: That's what we use.... love it. markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT - the "murch-esque" stand-up desk... - 17 years agoWayne, I dig the repurposed "car jacks" to lift up the "upper deck". However, what's up with the mixer? Can you really work with it like that? There's plenty of companies that make "adjustable height" workstations. If you want it motorized, it can be expensive. The manual versions are much more reasonable. I think that's really the best option... to haveby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT: Can anyone out there make me feel better about owning a Mac? - 17 years ago"I also am a sole proprietor and have a lot riding on my system (my entire business)" I'm not trying to be unduly harsh here, but... if that is the case, don't you think you should have a viable back up plan? I don't mean a trip to the genius bar. How about a second "spare" system available to take over should your primary go down. How about a battery back up for when thby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: "chalkboard" effect - 17 years agoFirst, you should know that nothing is "simple". Nothing! Second, what you're talking about is called "Telestrator". Here's their URL: Good luck. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Way OT: Walter Murch Trivia - 17 years agoOops. I meant "soundman"... duh! markby mark raudonis - Café LA Way OT: Walter Murch Trivia - 17 years agoI just watched "Gimme Shelter" the 1969 documentary about the Rolling Stones ill fated concert at Altamont. Walter Murch is credited as a cameraman. Guess what? So is George Lucas! Amazing what you learn if you watch the credits! markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Using Media Manager for Onlining - 17 years agoPhil, We absolutely check every shot in our sequence, but I don't think they're ALL out of whack. Our problem is that we have a wide range of formats being digitized on multiple systems with a variety of interfaces (firewire, AJA, etc.). Plus, we're off-lining from a dub of the original. As a result, I'm not surprised when we find shots a little bit off. BTW, we used the same workflow wby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Toys. - 17 years ago9 TB of combined storage via XSAN giving me 300MB/Sec. Do your homework on X-SAN. Storage is only the tip of the iceberg. For example, to make this system fly, not only do you need the storage, but you'll need a dedicated server, a dedicated "failover" server, fiber optic switches, gig e switches, UPC power supplies for everything (Not cheap!), not to mention a copy of x-san sofby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Burning sensation around my Deck - 17 years agoI think this thread wins the prize for "most creative subject line" of the year! markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: how should I shoot a sunrise? - 17 years agoHere's an "out of the box" suggestion. Do you have a digital still camera like the Canon EOS? If so, you can use the still camera to create great "Timelapse" sequences. Here's the best part... the resolution of the still camera is WAY better than 2K film! And, 'cause there's so few frames, it's quite easy to deal with in post. Are you trying to create an HD project that is half standard def... or are you trying to do a SD project that's half HD? It makes a huge difference in how you move forward. markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT- is it ok to use 10 sec of music w/o copyright? - 17 years agoYes, I read the article... again! Still have the same opinion. Note that none of the organizations that endorse this "policy statement" are studios or copyright holders. I stand by my comments that this document takes a very "liberal" approach to copyright law that is NOT shared by the actual copyright owners. Should an unsuspecting documentarian decide to followby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT- is it ok to use 10 sec of music w/o copyright? - 17 years agoRoxbury310, If you used your real name, I'd tell my lawyer how to contact you and set you straight. The website that you cite (centerfor social media) is often referenced as the final authority for "documentarians" trying to get to use something for nothing. I hate to burst your bubble, but the views expressed on that website are NOT SHARED BY THE STUDIOS WHO OWN THE MUSIC OR Fby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: re: Mastering via FCP vs. mastering via After Effects - 17 years agoLooks like an interesting read. Pay attention to the comments about workflow. Often an "on-line" session is as much about "consensus" as it is about quality. Never underestimate the power of being able to make and playback changes in "near" real time. There's a reason that people are willing to pay so much for that ability. Take that out of the equation, andby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Do your Avid friends a favor... - 17 years agoOy vey to you, Phil. I gotta agree with CHL and Jude. If I had a dollar for every "misconception" or "malicious disinformation" that I've corrected on this and other "Avid friendly" boards, I could buy an Avid Symphony Nitris. Oh, wait. I don't want one. I'll take five fully tricked out FCP on-line systems instead. markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Formats for reality show - 17 years agoScott, I'll be sure to let them know how you feel about the show! Here's an article about their production/post process. They use Panasonic's SDX-900, recording at DVCpro 50 (SD). They spend alot of time and money on color correction. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT: TV show template??? - 17 years agoShane's right about there NOT being any overall standard. Every network has their own particular way of doing things. In general, most 1/2 shows have three "acts", therefore they contain three breaks. I gotta tell you that "making the pilot first" then trying to sell it is a VERY LONG SHOT. If you get lucky and deliver something that everyone wants, then you're fortunatby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Media Manager almost ready for primetime - 17 years agoHarry, Sorry for the bad "flashback". However, using a mixture of DF/NDF as sources has not or ever was a problem for either Avid or FCP. My first Avid was version 4.2 on a Mac Quadra 950. Even that old dinosaur could handle mixed flavors of timecode. Whatever code issues you experienced (and it could have been many things) were not simply a function of mixing code formats.by mark raudonis - Café LA Re: 5.04 to 5.1 upgrade - 17 years agoQuoteIf I'm ranting senselessly and foolishly ... Yes you are. If you're using FCP as a professional tool, you're a fool not to have the most recent software version installed. As Scott points out above, it's incredibly affordable. Stop ranting and start updating! Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Final Touch from FCP and back not working uncompressed 10 bit sequence - 17 years agoFinal Touch is an awesome program. I'm thrilled at the color correcting capabilities it can provide Final Cut editors. Having said that, there are serious problems going back and forth between FCP and FT. I'm hoping that Apple's aquisition of the company will straighten out these kind of issues . As for your specific problem, I can tell you that we've abandoned FT until Apple integratesby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Menu Sliding noises: OT - 17 years agoThere is a kid's art program called "KID PIX" which attaches a sound effect to every action. For example, the erase button goes, "Ooops!", the delete button triggers an explosion, etc. I know my kid loved it. I always thought FCP should have that option: Sound FX for key strokes. Think of it. You could have a "producer" button that goes, "What a great ideaby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Google publicity issues - 17 years agoJoey, No, I don't consider you anonymous... you do sign every post and I enjoy reading them all. Nick, I see you your point. But, I look at it this way. If someone is coming here looking for information or help, the very least they can do is be open about who they are. This board is LUCKY to NOT be plagued by trolls and idiots causing trouble for everyone. That's due in part to Mr. Hby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Google publicity issues - 17 years agoIn general, I don't respond to "anyonmous" posters. If you can't be bothered with telling me your name, why should I help you? I think people take their privacy too seriously. Anyone can find out anything about you. Get over it!
