idealy you would convert the file to the same codec and settings as any other footage you might be using. mp4 is not a format that FCP recognises. have a look at MPEGStreamclip as a posible tool. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

a few years ago i simply used a stereo mini-jack to stereo mini-jack to come out of the DAT and into my Mac's audio in. worked fine. but if you get a dat with digital out, you could very easily conect to your G5's optical in ports. if the DAT has optical outs, all you;d need is a Toslink cable. you can get them at the hi-fi shop, but of course they cost at least twice as much as they should! ifby Nick Meyers - Café LA

yeah thats a great idea. you should get an old blank page, somehtng that might have some karks on it to begin with. try crannking up the lghtness/ carkness settings on hte photocopier, and play with exta noise or even just levels once you get it into PS. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

and if you are just using your TV as a computer display, then you need to pick one of the digital cinema desktop preview settings in A/V settings (option apple Q) but a camera used the way jude sugests will display your images properly anopther solution is a converter box. the canopus ADVC110 is bus powered, which is great for on-the-road. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

there's a lttle way to go yet with this feature. the implementation is a bit sloppy. the next movie doesnt play, as you'd expect it to. well it DOES seem to play, but it doesnt get displayed, which is weird. oh, hangfon.. if i hit the down arrow, the selected movie catches up with the now playing movie, and displays.. hmm... not quite right. also no MPG support yet. i guess they'll fby Nick Meyers - Café LA

it's true, you do get your footage recompressed when you aply an effect. but the eyeball thing counts for a lot, i reckon. thres no way i can see a pop, or any change at all when some text comes on. or a fade out starts. where i HAVE seen the bad side of DV is on gradients, where you can get visible banding of the colours. not just gradients you'd aply yourself, either. in one show i was usingby Nick Meyers - Café LA

no. FCP is kind of doing that anyway, you see, at least for the rendering. if you add to many conversions to the chain, you would even make the uneffected images slightly worse. for making an MPG file for DVD, perhaps you would get some improvemnts. also when adding extra FX, etc, FCP always refers back to the source files, and re-builds the renders from scratch. it never uses a render file asby Nick Meyers - Café LA

you could also do the same by simply making a copy of your final sequnce, changing the sequnce settings to 10bit uncompressed, and rendering. FCP always renders in the highest possible colour space, then converts back down to your sequence settting Graeme Natress recomends a sequnce setting of PhotoJpeg at 100% but if you are just going back to your DV deck, it's all pointless, and you shouldby Nick Meyers - Café LA

2. with an image in either the viewer of the canvas, press and hold down the H key. this blows the viewer or canvas up to 100% and that's how you can best see fields in FCP. you see them as a progresive image, with the fields "combed" together. much better is to use an NTSC Monitor, to get that tell-tale flickering. cheers, nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

Phillip Hodgetts rightly points out that this whoiile Quictime Pro" thing is incorrectly named: it's nothing more than quicktime PLAYER pro. the "pro" key does nothing but unlock some feature in the Quicktime PLAYER itslef all the apps that use QT, including FCP, gain nothing from you updating the quicktime PLAYER to "Pro". if you use the functions of the Pro player, tby Nick Meyers - Café LA

Chris, ANYTHING is a good purchase if you NEED it. i used my camera for a while before i got a DSR11. i NEEDED to get one to deal with the large format tapes on a 60min doco. i looked at heaps of decks before i settled on that one. back then there werent the decks with the built in screens. i like them. timecode display on the deck wasnt a major concern, as you can read the TC on either you extby Nick Meyers - Café LA

yeah, simple uncompressed 10bit on the drive. i like nickb's idea of an FCP project as well. i dont see any problem with this. except... do they have the same hardware as you?? meaning the io box? if not will an AJA codec file playback on their machine? probably, but i dont know. can you capture as the standard Apple 10bit codec? nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

DSR11 beens great for me. no hassles at all, except for the door. when the door breaks off (which it will.. guaranteed) remember to keep it atatched to the unit. you want to keep the dust out. it's magnetic, so it will stay there. i've got some extra tape as well. but the machine works fine. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

work how you feel, realy. try a few aproaches untill something works best. if audio needs corection that might be a good thing to start with, but its probably quicker to do it as you go. to maintain sync, learn about selecting multiple items for trimming with the ripple tool. that'll be in the books. there's a whole world of tutorials both here, and over at nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

good news about the deck having FW. "Also, the tapes I have are dupes, not masters, if that matters at all." my advice: use the masters for log & capture, the dupes are the back-up. why? because the masters will work with DV Start/stop detect. the dupes wont. it's a great feature, and it'd be a pity to lose it. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

if the deck doesnt have FW out, the best option is to return it to the client. it's useless to you. the s-video is an analoge video signal. when you hook a DV deck or camera to your computer via FW, Digital video, digital audio, timecode, and machine controll all go down the line. sorry, looks like it's time for "Plan C" nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

so the clips have been captured? if so, you have to make them offline. use the Make Offline window for that (Shift D for delete) then select all the clips that need to be changed, locate both the "tracks" column, and the "Audio" column in the browser control click in the tracks column, change the clips from 1V to 1V,2A then control click in the Audio column, choose beteen A1by Nick Meyers - Café LA

rather than burning a DVD, just to see you images on an NTSC monitor, or even just a TV, hook the TV up to your FCP system. Computer > DV Camera via FW Camera > TV via the suplied cables this is described in the FCP manual.by Nick Meyers - Café LA

something in your sequnce is not matching. double check them. maybe a frame reate, of field order? it could also be a distortion problem. control click on a clip and choose "remove attributes" if distortion is a removable attrubute, remove it. see if that fixes things. if it does, select all the clips, and remove attribues: distortion nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA
