no simple way to do that, I'm afraid a couple of things that could help: 1. turn on clip keyframes. this is the tiny button bottom left of timeline with blue & green lines click that and an area opens up underneath your clips with blue & green indicators blue is for motion and/or speed effects green indicates a filter. so you can at least see which clips have filters if they aby Nick Meyers - Café LA

I'm having the same issues myself now. so maybe i remember the behaviour incorrectly i didnt stop to analyse it, but from memory *some* attributes were kept in the still, and some (grades for instance) were not. OR maybe it's just broken overall. which version of FCP are you using , and what's your OS? im FCP7 under Yosemite, so there could be some incompatibility. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

Avid has a fantastic trim window, better than FCP's but my guess is you are talking about timing in the timeline. My disinter memory or Lightworks was that it's trimming was extremely versatile i wish i could help, but i haven't used many other apps! Premiere is supposed to be a lot like FCP. wether it has that same facility i don't know. Resolve is free, so it would definitely fit your nby Nick Meyers - Café LA

definitely transcode to Prores, for a whole host of reasons one is that you can't Conform the frame-rate of h264, but once you transcode to ProRes, you can. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

not in one step, but you have a couple of other approaches 1. copy the clip slip the clip paste atributes 2. toggle the "Clip Keyframes" view in the timeline (tiny button lower left with green & blue lines) you'll be able to see your clip's keyframes underneath the clip slip the clip grab the keyframes and slip them back. if you grab an individual keyframe then you'llby Nick Meyers - Café LA

Robert: "the duped 25 to 30p looks smoother than the dropped frames" those tests are not that instructive, as they're animated graphics with hard edges, etc, not humans, sitting and talking. i suggest you do your own tests on a short, 5 second exports of your interviews. hi robert, big job ! for starters, i'd suggest that ProResHQ could be overkill. you won't win back lost detail from the H264 by going HQ, ProRes4222 should suffice, and save you time and space. sadly you've got the two worst formats for mixing in FCP - 25 doesn't go into 30 that smoothly. yes, you can work with 30p material in a 25p timeline, but FCP will just drop every 6th frame, resultby Nick Meyers - Café LA

to be clear, setting the scratch disk is just telling FCP where to put newly captured or created media (renders etc) it has nothing to do with FCP's tracking of media. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

yeah, there a lot of settings to remember if you do use a preference manager, or back up your prefs manually, then i reckon its best to trash them first, then re-set them all. one of the problems with preferences is they get corrupt over time, so backing up non-fresh ones seems problematic to me. could be just me of course. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

just set a temporary scratch disk, and proceed. hopefully your project will open without issues. yes, the media will be off-line, but that;s the point no, it won't forget the file paths. when you plug your media drive back in, you then start reconnecting, and then you should be able to find the bad media. most likely it is over-large graphics files. do you have an you these? its just that you're yet to set FCP preferences in this new launch. in your timeline, click on the RT menu top left, and choose "Unlimited" also go to your System Preferences (Shift Q), Playback Control tab, and choose Unlimited there as well. might as well check your other preferences, too, like levels of undo, time for autosave, renders etc, etc cheers, nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

on the other mac are you importing the file into FCP? there's a long standing issue in FCP where you have to have a sequence preset selected that has the same frame rate as the file you're importing, otherwise you get sync issues. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

if this didn't happen BEFORE you upgraded to Sierra, and is happening AFTER you've upgrade to Sierra, then Sierra may well be the problem. if you suspect the media is causing problems, a good approach is to take the media off-line, that is, remove the drive/s with the media, but keep the project file available to open. open the project with NO media, see if you have any problems. hopefully yby Nick Meyers - Café LA

if you want to keep working in FCP7 (or under) the obvious solution is to NOT go to high sierra. for what i do, i've had fairly stable FCP behaviour in all OS's up to Yosemite. only major gotcha for me has been the colour picker stopped fully working in Mavericks. i haven't used FCP7 in Sierra, so can't comment. cheers, nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

your project size is very big for FCP i would start by reducing it do you have lots of older versions of edits in there? copying them into another project would be the simplest way to reduce your project size. the next step if that doesn't reduce it enough would be to split the project into more than one part. nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA

1998x1080 is the classic 1.185:1 ratio as everybody is pretty comfortable with a bit of letter-boxing, i'd say that's the way to go. obviously you'll have to scale the image down, but FCP doesn't offer the best scaling. i'd say run a minute or so thru compressor with the re-size settings set to "best" and see if you like it. you could convert all your rushes, OR, do your editby Nick Meyers - Café LA
