Since we don't know exactly what the "vocal crispness" you are looking for is exactly, it's difficult to say precisely what you should do. Most of the time, the word "crisp" suggests a "brighter" sound by increasing the higher frequencies - If that's what you are looking for, you should use one of the equalizers to increase the higher frequencies, and/oby Travis - Soundtrack Pro Re: HDV to the web - 16 years agoHi J. HDV can look great on the web. ( Example: www.DocumentaryNarration.com. The last segment was shot entirely in HDV. What you need to be concerned with primarily, is not the size of the completed files, but the number of bits-per-second. I don't have the exact specs with me, but the lower-definition version of the example is about 1200kbps, the ED is about 1800 and the HD version isby Travis - Café LA Re: Stock Footage Native HDV - 16 years agoHi Al, Like so many of these kinds of questions, the answer is "It depends." First, it depends on how good "good enough" is for you or your client. There are some people, whose opinions I otherwise greatly respect, who just HATE HDV of any kind - they'll tell you what you do here won't matter - it still started out as HDV. There are others who think HDV is just fantby Travis - Café LA Re: OT: Really working? Or just doing nothing? - 16 years agoThere are people out there who think that if you don't hate what you do, you aren't really working. Of couse, if their definition of "work" is "doing something you hate", then, by their definition, they're right, and you can't do anything about that. However, in any occupation, the most effective people really enjoy their "work". Where've you been the last 5 years?by Travis - Café LA Re: Flash Encoding and Artifacting - 16 years agoHi Will. Don't know specifically, but here are a few thoughts. (1) You're encoding to Flash-7, I presume .flv . Flash-8 is much better, if you are able to use that. (2) All compression schemes (.flv .mpg h.264, etc.) tend to show pixellation/blockiness during major picture transitions, like fades, etc. Normally we don't notice, becuase there's motion in the image - but on stills, likeby Travis - Café LA Re: APPLE DITCHES NAB 2008 - 16 years agoThis may be simpler than it looks: (1) Apple, last year, had an extremely impressive NAB presence -- and their presentation was based solely on exciting new products. This year, there aren't any new products, at least nothing that everyone hasn't already seen. There's just no way Apple can top last year's appearance. Making a reduced, or scaled down presentation is not in-keeping with Applby Travis - Café LA Re: YouTube Quality Bump - 16 years agoOther options are presented here: http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9858758-2.htmlby Travis - Café LA Re: ProKit update from Apple - 16 years agoThe bigger Apple gets, the more like Microsoft it becomes. -A part of natural progression of corporate culture. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just something you need to get used to.by Travis - Café LA Re: Stuttery HDV Playback - 16 years agoI should have said 59.94, not 59.92, I doubled NTSC frame rate to get that figure, but mathematics and I have never gotten along well. Gotta think about this... Yes, the vertical scanning rate for NTSC TVs would be around 59.92, However, let's see, if we're doing true 60P at 420 the horizontal scanning rate would need to be around 31kHz instead of 1575... I could easily be wrong here... Soby Travis - Café LA Re: Stuttery HDV Playback - 16 years agoSome other possibilities. (1) Since few of us have seen 60P NTSC h.264 video displayed by Quicktime, there might be a bug in the Quicktime player, which only shows up under those conditions. It would seem wise to check the file with some other player than Quicktime. (2) You might be playing back at 59.92. If that's the case, the video would be compatible playing back on broadcast TVs (aby Travis - Café LA Re: Stuttery HDV Playback - 16 years agoHi Mark. If I understand your post correctly, you need to create a standard definition (720 x 480) file encoded with h.264. For whatever reason, you're not doing NTSC-style interlace, or creating a file which will be viewed on standard DVD. However you do want to archive your program as 720 60P, for High-Definition use later. You're concerned, becuase, when you watch HD playback from yourby Travis - Café LA Re: Loud Drive - 16 years agoI'm not an expert on such things, but over the years, I've had the HD driver chip go, shortly after one of the drives started having problems, this took the second drive with it. I've lost motherboards after a hard drive started having problems - of course it is possible that the motherboard was the cause of the HD problems. I've had external drives take out USB, SCSI and Firewire ports. And Iby Travis - Café LA Re: Loud Drive - 16 years agoHi J, I've been using Hard Drives since 10MB was considered huge. Gone through a lot of them over the decades. It's been my experience that ANY kind of unusual noise means you need to remove that drive from your system as soon as possible. Remember, you can lose more than just the data on that one drive.by Travis - Café LA Re: 1080i into 24p whats the best method? - 16 years agoHi Ricky, I haven't gotten Nattress Film Effects yet, but I've heard it does a good job of providing that "Film look." If you're looking for the "best method", many people who should know have said that the best thing to do is through a top-quality HD to film transfer, and then have it telecined back to HD. Can I just send them those .flv files, and not worry about the fact they don't perform so well on my end? ...That, of course, depends on what it was you agreed to provide them. If you agreed to provide .flv files, and they're happy with what you send them, your answer is yes. Primary limitation is lack of SATA discs.by Travis - Café LA Re: Flash file question - please help! - 16 years agoIt depends on how sophisticated your client is. If your client has and knows how to use Flash, you only need to deliver the .flv file. If the client does not have Flash, or a reasonable substitute, but does know how to embed a .swf into the .html document, then you will need to deliver the .swf, or swfs (you may need more than one, depending on your particular implementation.) If your clby Travis - Café LA Re: Flash file question - please help! - 16 years agoHi Simone, A Flash .flv file requires a Flash "Player" in order to be played back. That player is usually a Flash .swf program, which must be embedded into an .html document, such as a web page, to function. Most Flash Video creation programs, such as Sorensen Squeeze also come with a method for creating both the .swf and .html files needed. Since most everyone has Flash instaby Travis - Café LA Re: OT replacement camera - 16 years agoHi Jack, Your problem is even bigger - not only have VHS cameras gone away, but VHS has ceased to be the "universal format standard" that you could count on for playback. Five years ago, I could hand someone a VHS tape, and I would know that the recipient would somehow, somewhere, have access to a VHS playback machine - and that they would most likely have the ability to fast-forwarby Travis - Café LA Re: Final Cut to wmv error - 16 years agoHi Steve... Good to hear from you. I have been amazed at how well Parallels works - I've run all sorts Windows video and audio editing programs without any problems, so far. However, remember, Parallels creates a "vitural" PC environment - It does an excellent job of simulating a Windows PC within the Mac environment, but there is no way it can create an actual PC. You will see that any audio that is "clipped" because it is too loud will have sharp edges on the waveform at the point it reaches maximum level. This is where the audio has "hit the cby Travis - Café LA Re: Distortion - 16 years agoHi John. Whether there's anything that can be done depends on a number of factors, including how badly your audio is "clipped", how good you need your final audio to sound, and how much time and/or money you're willing to spend. If you have dialogue that's distorted at only a few places, you can often fix it by appling a low-pass filter to the segments that are distorted. More people have the player already installed than any other system. Flash plays on Macs, MS-Windows, even Linux/Unix machines. That question was seldom asked, because film people understood the limitations of 16mm film - the cost vs. performance compromises. HDV has limitations, and it has an important advantage - It's cheap! That process shouldn't take much more time than being able to export to an .flv file directly. If you must export .flv from FCP, I'd suggest the "Flash Exporter" from on2.com (about $200.00). If all you need to do is show Flash 8 video, then Flix standard ($39.95 at www.on2.com) will probably work just fine for you. There's even a free demo. I use Flash 8 - the current version (CS3) is $699.00 . I have a bit of Flash experience - the learning time for me for inserting video to a web page using Flash-8 was about a half-hour.
