It's not like a web video say where you have unlimited data rate to throw at a file to get the quality you want. Exceed 8 Mbps or so and your disc won't play. Noahby NoahK - DVD Studio Pro Re: 720x405 or 853x480(Detailed explanation in the post) - 14 years agoHere's another link that helps explains the difference between 4:3 letterbox- which sucks. And 16:9 anamorphic, which is what you want to use if you want anything other than 4:3 square frames. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: SOL with ProRes 422? - 14 years agoAn internal SATA drive should be fine at least up to ProRes HQ. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: How can I get FCP Studio version 6? - 14 years agoYeah have some patience. Set a tracker on eBay. You'll get it eventually. But I'd instead suggest getting an Intel machine- step into the future. It's nice here...by NoahK - Café LA Re: OT: Name Shortening shareware? - 14 years agoDepends on the file system you use on the server. I'd pick one that supports longer file names.... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Frame size...Color or FCP - 14 years agoI'd grade in 4K and then resize once it's all rendered and back in FCP. You can easily do an output of the 1080p version and put that as an overlay so you can check shot by shot how much to reframe each shot. Going to take a day but the final quality will be much higher coming from a 4K raw grade than 1080p repos... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Rock n Rolla opening credits* - 14 years agoI'd say more AfterEffects than anything... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: OT: Reverse Compatibility QT10 - QT7.6 - 14 years agoWhat's a QTSC? Anyways- nothing under the hood has changed except for QuickTime Player X removes many of the manual controls. But you still have the option for QT7 as part of your Snow Leopard update. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: I erased LASTCLIP.txt - 14 years agoYou're not hosed without lastclip.txt. It only affects clips spanned between two cards. As long as you have all the other folders and files intact you should be able to log and transfer the footage. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Minimum size for on-screen disclaimer? - 14 years agoIs there really such a rule from the FCC? If the FCC had one it would be overruled by whichever station or network or distributor was releasing the content, wouldn't it? Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: FCP doesn't see clip name when reconnecting (v. 6.0.6) - 14 years agoHave you tried to manually reconnect a clip? Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Reconnecting issue with file extensions - 14 years agoI checked- this longer happens in 7, time to upgrade... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Reconnecting issue with file extensions - 14 years agoHrm- you're right. Perhaps that is worth looking at. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Upgrade to HD & External Monitoring - 14 years agoI'm assuming we're talking about cameras with HDMI, component or HD-SDI which are becoming more and more common. I'm typically a big fan of sticking with the on-board compression. But with capture units like the AJA Ki Pro and an HD-SDI connection say on a Sony EX1 you can greatly improve over the built-in compression when capturing a live signal. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Reconnecting issue with file extensions - 14 years agothat happens pretty much if you rename a clip at the finder level though- extension or otherwise. Once you break the initial relationship between the name of the original media and the corresponding clip in FCP you make automatic reconnection impossible. Best to start with clips with the extensions already attached before bringing into FCP if a cross-platform process is needed. Also most apps thaby NoahK - Café LA Re: Upgrade to HD & External Monitoring - 14 years agoFrom what source? Generally any digitally connected camera gives you the best possible signal you'll get from pre-recorded footage. Only live footage can in some cases be improved with a direct capture card. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: how do you recover the best version of a project? - 14 years agoYeah I usually only save a single version of every project for this very reason. If you want to make an experiment- duplicate the sequence you're working on and date that. But having to track multiple instances of one project over many FCP project files- in addition to the Autosave vault versions that only get saved for the active project- is a recipe for mass confusion. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: Color correction filter for video projector - 14 years agoYeah and believe me, nobody ever wants to deal with an assload of spill.by NoahK - Café LA Re: Color correction filter for video projector - 14 years agoYeah I guess you can experiment with that but I think you'll find that the filter you try to put in front of the projector will do more harm than good as Jeff suggests. I'd suggest another projector or you just live with the best you can do menu wise and correct further in post. A projector screen is a nice geometric shape that's easily to track and correct with secondaries in Color or whatever cby NoahK - Café LA Re: Color correction filter for video projector - 14 years agoThis is something you should only set in the menus of the projector. If that doesn't work out then the footage itself needs more calibrated color grading. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: inexpensive tapeless cameras for students - 14 years agoGawd- if I lived in fear of 'pontificating' I'd be in the wrong business... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: 24p DVD - Scrolling Titles - OMG... - 14 years agoI'm not a big fan of mathematically figuring out animation rates. Do what feels right... it's very easy in FCP to adjust your keyframes. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: is 42 Gb too big for 1 hour movie? - 14 years ago42 GB sounds far too high for a web streaming movie. Don't forget to select a desired data rate. Typically something around 500-1000 Kbps gives a good trade-off between quality and size. And don't forget to also set audio to AAC. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: 24p DVD - Scrolling Titles - OMG... - 14 years agoIf it's truly a 24p DVD it's playing at 24p and something encoded at 29.97 would be playing back at 20% slow motion- which might account for the perceived better look. You'll get better results by adding some motion blur to your credits for 24p. Remember it's animation so animation without a blur is going to look jerky past a certain speed. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: 4K to 2K to HDCAM SR - 14 years agoIf you have Final Cut Studio 3 with Color 1.5- then you can grade in 4K with Color. Which I highly recommend... Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: inexpensive tapeless cameras for students - 14 years agoYeah I'd stick with the DV cameras- assuming we're talking about a manual camera like say the DVX100. There's no point in giving them HD cameras if it's all about the technique and um... you're financially challenged. But I mean dang- if I were paying 34K tuition I'd be expecting a lot more than what it sounds like they're getting. I hate to say it but every day I see more evidence that if you waby NoahK - Café LA Re: Please Help! FCP Movie Flickers/Drops Frames on Final Export - 14 years agoRight- ProRes and H.264 are both compatible with the Windows version of the QT Player. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: inexpensive tapeless cameras for students - 14 years agoYou can use something like MPEG Streamclip to convert Flip footage into something FCP will like. Here's how: But Jeff is onto an important point, it really depends what the point of your classes are. If it's how to tell stories by shooting things a certain way and editing, camera like the Flip or digital point and shoots are a great little bargain to just get thoughts down onto footage.by NoahK - Café LA Re: Please Help! FCP Movie Flickers/Drops Frames on Final Export - 14 years agoSounds like a playback issue- remember that at 720p, the animation codec has a massive data rate. Unless you're playing back off a RAID it's probably dropping frames to keep up. Try exporting to ProRes or to H.264 instead and you'll get much smoother playback. Noahby NoahK - Café LA Re: inexpensive tapeless cameras for students - 14 years agoI'm a big believer in the flip type cameras as solid for students. Also a lot of the current compact digital cameras have excellent video modes. For example, the Panasonic FX35 has 720p video and a nice zoom lens that blows away most 'video' cameras in its price range. If you can live with a camera that takes away some of the manual controls you can get a lot of camera for that price range. Noby NoahK - Café LA |
