It sounds to me like Final Cut Pro is not checking the type code when capturing the file (because it already knows it's a movie) but the lack of a type code is preventing it from being imported because there's no way for FCP to know an imported file is a movie without a file extension or type code.by Jon Chappell - The Bug Report

It's an error caused by a hardware accelerated decoder, which kicks in when you edit with media such as MPEG-2, HDV, XDCAM, H.264, etc. These are not editing formats and I would recommend transcoding your footage to something more suitable such as ProRes.by Jon Chappell - Café LA

KGCore is a key internal component of FCP. When you upgraded to Snow Leopard, did you just install it over the top or did you reinstall Final Cut Studio?by Jon Chappell - Café LA

The "project is unreadable" message is generally caused by a corrupt project file or missing metadata. It is not normally caused by media. Crashes are caused by media but the OP didn't make it clear whether Final Cut Pro was actually crashing (i.e. quitting and returning to the desktop) or simply displaying an error message.
