Re: Compressing Files - 13 years agoYes you should always look at just under the actual size you want as there are often overheads in files that vary according to the format and this could pip you over the threshold your have set.by Ben King - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Compressing Files - 13 years agoThis is where a little Maths and a little widget comes in handy! It is pretty easy to work out how big a file will be when you now the duration a datarate! Filesize (in MegaBytes) = Duration (in Seconds) x Datarate (AV in MB per second) or Filesize (in KiloBytes) = Duration (in Seconds) x Datarate (AV in KB per second) Filesize (in Bytes) = Duration (in Seconds) x Datarate (AV inby Ben King - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: OT: Essential Mac software we couldn't or shouldn't be without... - 13 years agoFor everyone following this thread Alsoft just released the latest upgrade to Disk Warrior 4.3 If you haven't got Disk Warrior I suggest you get it.by Ben King - Café LA Re: Video Filters in Final Cut Pro 7 - 13 years agoYou can also copy (drag and drop) the filters from the viewer to the browser then drop them onto the other clips on the timeline.by Ben King - Café LA Re: Somewhat OT File Hosting Fees - 13 years agoI've been doing this for years. Back in the day you could charge quite a hefty fee but nowadays it is different. I tend not to charge for temporary hosting of smaller <200MB offline/web files during edit and for a short time after completion for transfer of files. I offer it as part of the service - many of my larger clients either have their own FTP or use DropBox/YouSendit so the free orby Ben King - Café LA Re: Larry Jordan has seen the light... - 13 years agoI have been reading all the new bits about Lion and I think FCP 8 will either use this early or at least under Lion we will have most of our Undo and File Saving issue prayers answered! http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/"] Past perfect. Hands down. Some models have a lot of picture control and adjustment settings; meaning they are able to be properly calibrated to REC709 or so close you'd be forgiven you have just spent several thousand on a Grade 1. Although not if you use the Voice Over tool.by Ben King - Café LA Re: SSD Lighting fast but NOT there yet. - 13 years agoMost of the SSD RAID systems out there are viable JC - the problem is that most people are able to afford them! Take a look at the sort of thing (as far as capacity and speed) that a lot more people will be using in the next few years: First will be the Hybrids RAIDs and Hybrid HDDs in RAIDs then I think SSD will start to take over (unless the tech for disk platters gets much bettby Ben King - Café LA Re: getting cassette tape audio into FCP . . . - 13 years agoDamn G - looks like you get the subscription!by Ben King - Café LA Re: getting cassette tape audio into FCP . . . - 13 years agoOn most macs you have a Mic input which you can connect to the output of the cassette player (care with the volume as you can easily distort the audio) and you can simply use any recording software including garage band or soundtrack pro or a freeware one (use google). Alternatively there are a number of "cheap" Audio Cassette to USB players to do just this if your old Cambridge Audiby Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoNo probs man - just do make time to really thoroughly test each drive to the max if you use DiglloydTools as you may find one duff drive and depending where you bought it you can send it back before you get 6 months down the line and your RAID fails!by Ben King - Café LA Re: THUNDERBOLT DEMO - 13 years agoQuoteThe only problem with the new range is the lack of CUDA. That means you can't run the Resolve/CS5 on it, unless there are there is new support for the cards. It is extremely useful as you can then render more than 1 sequence this way. Also I have found even with the old version of FCP that it never crashed this way.by Ben King - Café LA Re: THE NEW MACBOOK PRO'S ARE HERE!! THE NEW MACBOOK PRO'S ARE HERE!! - 13 years agoI use a Pref Pane app to choose 32/64 bit Kernel Very useful if you have old apps that need to run in 32bit - but most run on 64bit anyway with no issues.by Ben King - Café LA Re: Ideal setup for freelance editing? - 13 years agoDepends on the drive and how full it is. But you should be able to playback 1 stream of ProRes HD without too much issue on a single disk setup - but I don't recommend it. Time to think about a small RAID array for the media drive. Basic 2 drive RAID 0 would work but you might want to look at the newer hardware RAID 5 boxes out there with 4 or more HDDs. Alternatively an SSD or SSD RAID (ifby Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoThe AJA does the average over the period of the duration of the filesize you choose. Turn down the text and cut and paste it to save it to a file if you like - it will give you a rough guide to the performance and you can see where the actual peak and the lowest data transfer occurs. Try using the 16GB filesize to test the sustained throughput - although on 70MBps you'll be leaving it for aby Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoOh one thing I completely forgot to factor in... ...the ExpressCard 34 slot on the MacBook Pro only has a 2.5Gbps PCIe interface so you'll likely get less than 3Gbps of the single eSATA anyway (once the overheads are taken into account).by Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoQuoteThe array in question is swapped between two systems, a 17" laptop and a MacPro tower. The interfaces are the ones recommended by OWC. The tower card is rated at 6 Gb/s and the express card at 3 Gb/s. Of course you won't get any performance increase by using 3Gbps single eSATA to 6Gbps thats a bottle neck there. You might want to look at 6Gbps enclosures and HDDs such as the Hitacby Ben King - Café LA Re: THE NEW MACBOOK PRO'S ARE HERE!! I do that a lot when I have long clips which is impossible to scrub in the viewer. The nice thing in FCP is that you have the ability to open many timelines. Just use cut and paste!by Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoCore blimey Dave you don't arf like to rock the boat! QuoteBlock size is not something you simply recommend that "larger is always better." Depending on your RAID level, whether it's HW- or SW-based, the number of drives in the RAID, etc., you may actually get better performance with other block sizes. It depends on your setup. It's a rule of thumb - but to a point it is true -by Ben King - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoIn which case take a look at these But check with both Seagate and iStorage Pro if they are compatible as I haven't had the chance to use the Seagates yet.
