I'll never buy WD (or Maxtor) again, so I'm looking at either Hitachi Enterprise class SATA II or Seagate Barracuda SATA II. Any one have any experience or preference between those two brands?by philnorden - Café LA Re: Starting Feature, want to cut HD - 15 years agoThere's a few important questions that need to be answered first. You say this project will have a film finish, by which I assume you mean cutting negative, no DI. So then question is why do you want to cut in HD? The reason I like to cut features in HD is solely so that we can have temp screenings in a theater on a decent sized screen. In that case, you don't really need to telecine to HDCAM, whby philnorden - Café LA requirements for XDCAM HD - 16 years agoI gonna be cutting a project that was shot on a Viper and recorded to HDCAM SR. I'll be working offline with XDCAM downconverts using the 1080p24 codec - 23.98 fps, 1440X1080, 4.5 MB/sec. I'd really like to be able to use my old G5 system, consisting of... I export a self contained QT from FCP, import that into DVDSP, and let DVDSP do the encoding.by philnorden - DVD Studio Pro encode time - 16 years agoOk, so I'm kinda new to DVDSP4, but what is a reasonable encode time for my project? I'm just making a simple NTSC screener, and my one asset is a 100 minute quicktime move (DVCAM format) that i exported from FCP. I'm encoding it 4:3, one pass, with a 3.0 mbps bit rate, max set to 5.0. This encode is taking 2.5 - 3 hours on my G5 Dual 2.0 with 2gb RAM seems awfully long to me...by philnorden - DVD Studio Pro Re: HDV and MPEG Streamclip - 16 years agogood idea - i'll send some tests to the finishing facilityby philnorden - Café LA Re: HDV and MPEG Streamclip - 16 years agoI had concerns about timecode as well, but the clips I've tested all have proper TC starts. I can't open the files from Premiere at all, FCP won't recognize them. I was warned about this at the start, something to do with a JVC plug in that Premiere needed for capture... And whole rolls are not an issue - those Premiere files are already broken down into individual shots. How do I know when to use one or the other?by philnorden - Café LA Re: Audio Mixdown - 16 years ago> If one uses PTV (Print to Video) it does all renders as well as mixdown automatically. But not Edit to Tape? That seems odd...by philnorden - Café LA Re: Audio Mixdown - 16 years agoI've also never done an audio mixdown, but I do render everything before any kind of output. Doesn't that achieve the same result?by philnorden - Café LA Re: QT export doesn't match sequence - 17 years agoNick, You've inadvertantly solved the problem. I occurred to me that you're right, 2hrs was an awfully long export time. Then I remembered that my footage is all anamorphic and I'm cutting in a non-anamorph sequence for viewing my 4:3 NTSC monitor. Never paid attention to the olive green render bar, and when I hit cmd+R nothing happened, so I didn't think about it. So I re-did the assemblyby philnorden - Café LA Re: QT export doesn't match sequence - 17 years agoActually it's 2hr 40 min, and yeah the export took about 2 hoursby philnorden - Café LA Re: QT export doesn't match sequence - 17 years agoIt's a straight cut assembly, so nothing to render or mixdown, and all my clips are from the same master tape. System drive and media RAID have plenty of free space. As far as I know, 23.98 is only non drop. I have been getting some weird behavior for the last few weeks - canvas won't update, trim mode funkiness, a tool that doesn't behave as expected, etc. - but I haven't worried aboutby philnorden - Café LA Re: QT export doesn't match sequence - 17 years agoboth - they're identicalby philnorden - Café LA QT export doesn't match sequence - 17 years agoI'm working on a DV NTSC project at 23.98 fps. Recently cut a 2hr rough assembly of the footage and made a 26 GB QT export for the director and producer - they wanted to be able to watch on their laptops. So I'm really wondering if there have been any significant improvements or changes to FCP beyond the NAB announcements. I'm talking about some basic editing/interface issues that have gone unaddressed for a long time. This is a general concern, I'mby philnorden - Café LA Re: editing with H264 - 17 years agoI kept it at 15 fps the whole time. But I tried another method. After completing my cut, I relinked it to the original h.264 media files, exported a QT movie (not QT conversion), then used Compressor to create a new h.264 file. Seems to work.by philnorden - Café LA Re: mpeg files from a PC - 17 years agoThat's good to know. My RAID is already empty, so I'll try usining it. But what about the actual media files? Should I anticipate any problems since they were captured on a PC? As far as I know, they are just NTSC DV.by philnorden - Café LA mpeg files from a PC - 17 years agoA friend has some mpeg media files that he captured to an external firewire drive on a PC based edit system. I think he used Premiere Pro. Can copy them to my SATA RAID for use in FCP? What if I format my RAID as MS-DOS? I haven't received the drive yet, I'm trying to figure it out ahead of time.by philnorden - Café LA Re: Do your Avid friends a favor... - 17 years agoOy Vey, here we go again... Can we please, please put a ban on the FCP vs. Avid debate? It really is pointless, especially when partisans from one camp bash the other side, even though they know little about the competition. I've been working on Avid for 15 years, FCP for 5 years and I'm perfectly happy with both. Mask shape doesn't give me any aspect ratio presets, and it's not real time. Maybe nesting, like Rui mentioned, is the only other way, but that's a lousy option if you want the matte available while your cutting.
