Re: incorrect merged clips? - 11 years ago> It has hundreds of merged clips. The sound sources are 48kHz-24bit .wav files. Should they have been converted to .aiff before the merging? If an FCP7 system can't deal with WAV files, then there's something bigger that's wrong with the system. "Breaking down" how? Corruption? Media going offline? Choppy playback? Software crashes?by derekmok - Café LA Re: Best codec for H.264 camera footage - 11 years ago> You say the H.264 edits "disappear or change without warning, with no chance of recovery" and that "backups of project files don't do a thing against this problem". > If rolling back the project file by one minute lets you edit again, even if further editing may cause a breakdown, then this is a "restore". Was I wrong in that assumption? Unfortunately, yes. Just because the software is capable of using a codec doesn't make it sound for actual work. > When it went to vimeo sync started to delay. That has almost certainly nothing to do with the H.264 codec being used in editingby derekmok - Café LA Re: h264 potential nightmare - 11 years ago> Then create a duplicate project and trick the project to relink to the converted media. If they edited with H.264 media, there's a good chance they also didn't do proper file management. You could be looking at a manual re-conform of all the edits. H.264 media doesn't have timecode, so even if every converted ProRes clip maintains the old file name, the edits still may not reconnect proby derekmok - Café LA Re: h264 potential nightmare - 11 years agoDon't edit with H.264, not on Final Cut Pro 7. Convert it to ProRes.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Best codec for H.264 camera footage - 11 years ago> FCP7 project autosave can be set as frequent as every minute. Autosaves and manual backups of project files don't do a thing to guard against this problem, because the problem is with how the project files interact with the media files. In every instance in the past where I've seen this problem, the lack of timecode means that even older projects will reconnect to the wrong part of the vby derekmok - Café LA Re: Best codec for H.264 camera footage - 11 years ago> So far it seems to behave OK in a timeline - what's the down side to H.264? If you want your edits to disappear or change without warning, with no chance of recovery...sure. Use H.264 in FCP7. If you really want to skip the conversion step, then move to FCPX or Adobe Premiere, one of the newer editing applications that can edit this format better with more stability.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Best codec for H.264 camera footage - 11 years ago> What should I convert it to, if it needs converting at all? Convert to one of the ProRes codecs. As for which one to choose, that depends on your workflow, amount of footage, amount of available storage, system capabilities, etc.by derekmok - Café LA Re: uncorrect aspect ratio making an AVI in streamclip - 11 years ago> My problem is that the new conversion file does not respect my aspect ratio, so whatever I select unscaled or scaled always gives me a 3:4 screen What frame size did you pick for the target conversion?by derekmok - Café LA Re: FCP 7 RED EPIC WORKFLOW - 11 years agoWhen in doubt, test. Ask them to send you one or two clips and then edit with them to see if you have any problems.by derekmok - Café LA Re: No Firewire 800 on my new imac - 11 years ago> I didn't know firewire 800 was dead > are we suppose to trash the old drives and buy new ones? See above...adapters. FireWire 800 hasn't been included in new Macs for some time now, at least two years, I think. It's a typical Apple move, trying to force people to go to Thunderbolt, and in the process forcing people to buy a bunch of new hardware.by derekmok - Café LA Re: AVI to Quicktime Movie - 11 years agoThe resolution will be whatever you tell the software to generate. You should not be doing a "Save as" -- you should be doing a re-export/conversion.by derekmok - Café LA Re: AVI to Quicktime Movie - 11 years ago> I'm currently doing a "save as" to a movie file. Will that drop into FCP 7? That will only work if QuickTime Player can actually see the image. If the picture is all white, then you don't have the codec and a resave won't do any good.by derekmok - Café LA Re: AVI to Quicktime Movie - 11 years agoAVI is simply a wrapper, and QuickTime Player and MPEG Streamclip can open that format just fine. What is the codec?by derekmok - Café LA Re: No Firewire 800 on my new imac - 11 years agoYou didn't check when buying? Use a Firewire-Thunderbolt adapter.by derekmok - Café LA Re: FCP7 conversions - 11 years ago> First, the h264 route: creates a file that is something on the order of 3X the size of the .mov (which was too big to begin with). That sounds nearly impossible. How high a bit rate did you enter? Frame rate and frame size? And what are the original video's frame rate and frame size? How long is your show in terms of running time? What is your target file size? You keep complainiby derekmok - Café LA Re: DVD SP doesn't allow me to import HDV files - 11 years ago> just in this pots is recomended to use the QT self contained file directly to DVD SP. Using a QuickTime movie from FCP to encode means fewer steps, not better. > what's best to send to compressor from FCP or from the QT self contained file ? You already have a QuickTime movie. Use that. It will simply make data recovery even less likely to succeed. At this point, you should consult a professional. One option is to swap the drive out to a new enclosure, but as far as I can tell your issue is with the disk inside, not with the power supply or enclosure.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Applying graphics between foreground and background in FCP 6 - 11 years agoWanted Man Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > - Take a still of the plate in the timeline via > export conversion - still image ??? From what I can see, this will only work if your foreground element (the subject) is completely dead still. It won't work on a live subject without a greenscreen or rotoscoping.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Easy fix for tricky exposure? - 11 years agoYou can also try something like Lyric Media's Shadow-Highlight, which clamps down only on a certain range of highlights. Of course, a professional colorist would be able to tackle this issue much more effectively.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Naming of Clips - 11 years ago> The system assumes nothing. Why would you need to? Every project has a different set of media. Even I'm not anal-retentive enough to put the project title into the file name of every clip. It makes the clip names too long to manage, and also hinders navigation because even with a short prefix, you would now have the sameby derekmok - Café LA Re: dealing with non-pro source footage where time codes all start at zero - 11 years agoThis was easier to deal with when Log and Transfer worked, which would generate time-of-day timecode based on camera metadata. However, the Canon 5DmkIII generates a file structure that can no longer be ingested with the Canon E1 plugin. (Why, oh why did they mess with this? So unnecessary.) And as you noted, Log and Transfer can't deal with GoPro or iPhone footage, period, nor can it handleby derekmok - Café LA Re: Importing .avi files to FCP 7 - 11 years agoYou shouldn't ever be sticking AVIs into an FCP 7 timeline. Convert it to a QuickTime movie.by derekmok - Café LA Re: FCP 6 & Dip to Color Issue - 11 years agoMy first guess is that your issue may be simpler than this. Check to make sure those two clips really are flush against each other. A gap would cause the problem you're talking about.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Some QuickTime clips will not play - 11 years agoFor about 10 years, whenever I see the word "QuickTime" in Software Updates, I avoid the update like the plague. It works. These updates were not intended for pro users. Usually, if you need a codec for, say, a new camera format, Apple is the last place to get it.by derekmok - Café LA Re: How can I "un-deassign" a key? - 11 years agoOPTION-H to assign Keyboard Layout.
