Go to User preferences > Editing tab > and put a check in the box next to "Trim with sequence audio". At least, that's where it is in FCP 4.5. I'm not on 5 yet. It should be somewhere similar, anyway.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

If you apply widescreen bars all you are doing, essentially, is cropping the top and bottom off the picture (or covering them over, if you prefer). There is no distortion of the picture whatsoever. You can distort the picture if you want to with other methods, but the widescreen filter will not change your aspect ratio.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Just to update on this. I finally gave in an threw a canopus advc100 into the chain as per BJ's advice and it works without a hitch. For anyone else with this problem, it seems like the DSR does not send out a steady enough signal for the DVD recorder to accept as being within bounds. The workaround is either FCP > firewire > Canopus box > DVD Recorder or, if from tape, DSR11 > Canopby Jude Cotter - Café LA

You can double it up on the timeline. Just option shift drag the clip up or down one layer, or copy paste it. Turn snapping on to make it simple to find sync.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Or you can hold the shift key while you move things horizntally, which will help you to drag cleanly left and right, without introducing vertical movement. You can still move things vertically using this trick, but it takes more effort to actually shift off the plane you are sliding along. Also, maybe you could try a different file in iDVD to see if the problem is there or in FCP. There are a lot of steps along the way that could be part of the problem. I'm a bit confused as to where you get the error code. Is it in FCP or in iDVD?by Jude Cotter - Café LA

i/O errors are often hardware related. If you don't have another disk to try, move the project to another computer if you can and see if it works ok there. Is the project running off an external drive?by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Oh yeah. sorry - didn't read that carefully enough. I'm guessing its a muxed movie. If it is you can convert it into something FCP can use by demuxing it with mpegstreamclip, or toast titanium. Importing quicktimes under 7.0.1 and FCP HD works ok here, so it's probably not a quicktime problem.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Did you do an audio mixdown before laying off to tape? Render > Only > Mixdown. This is not the same as just rendering the audio, or doing a 'Render All". Lots of people miss this, and it's important for reducing the playback load when going to tape. The self contained movie does essentially the same thing by reducing the audio.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Maybe it's detecting a receipt on your system and it's trying to tell you not to bother downloading it because you already have it? Try going to Library > Receipts and see if there is a FCP 4.5 file in there. If so, delete it and try the download again.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Ahh .. from the site Dan linked "Be aware that exporting using the Meridien Codec in AE any size other than 720x486 will fail. 720x486 (D1 NTSC) is the only supported size for the Meridien Codec. As a note, a common alternative to the Meridien codec for exchange with AE is the Animation Codec." So your widescreen size is not going to work at all maybe? Hey Derek - there's an even quicker way to pan your clips. Select all the clips and then Modify > Audio > Pan Centre. There is a keyboard shortcut for this but I don't remember it. If you use it a lot you can make a button to put on your timeline so then you just select all your clips and press the button. Noice.by Jude Cotter - Café LA

Have you tried opening an autosave copy? Do any of the autosaves work? Out of interest, have you run Norton's recently? Is your media stored internally or on an external drive? Perhaps the connection has been lost? I've not seen a definitive answer for the No Movie in File thing yet - it would be great to find out why this happens. I don't know about the auto resize thing. I'd be ..disturbed.. if FCP automatically resized everything I brought in. You could just turn on image and wireframe in the canvas and physically drag the image to the correct size in a couple of seconds, though. As for the second part of the problem - I know there is an issue with Avid's quicktime codec that requires that the export be exactly a partiby Jude Cotter - Café LA

We have just been given a new Toshiba DVD recorder which we want to use to dump a DVD copy of a TV show we make once a week. Sometimes it works fine, the whole show is recorded to the Toshibas HDD in realtime and is copied onto a new DVD in about six minutes flat. But sometimes it goes bananas. Paste attributes - select a clip with the correct settings > edit> copy. Select all the clips that need the effect added > edit> paste attributes > select the components you want transferred, in this case, drop shadow.by Jude Cotter - Café LA
