Re: New Academic Price for FCS Kills it For This Teacher - 14 years agoYou're right about learning the fundamentals on FCP. Also... I'm not training editors, I'm teaching artists, primarily young choreographers to edit art projects and dance-films. They loved the power of FCP but as independent artists they won't be able to use it.by MitchellRose - Café LA New Academic Price for FCS Kills it For This Teacher - 14 years agoThey've raised the Academic price from $699 to $899. I teach editing on FCP at an arts college. When my students have asked how much it costs for when they graduate, I'd always say buy it while you're a student cuz it's ONLY $699. And they'd cringe--they're students and they're drowning in debt. But a couple of them would buy it. No one will buy it now -- and so why should I teach it to them. I'mby MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoI've done that and had DVD players screw up in theaters. I find them very unreliable. Plus, I don't think they look very good. Throwing away 90% of your information, it's no surprise. I see banding in gradients and other artifacts. But thanks.by MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoYeah Mike, I think you might be wise about provoking the wrath of the demo demi-Gods.by MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoYes I did. There's one film of mine which is particularly bad because of how much lateral movement there is. (You can see the beginning of LEARN TO SPEAK BODY on my website.) Other films aren't THAT bad. But I make dance films. If I can see that films with a lot of movement are bad, then I know that any film with movement is not as good as it can be. Believe me, a number of FCP experts (Kenby MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoI have tried that. Doesn't do it. But thanks.by MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoThanks, Mike. I've been putting each film on a DVCam tape. The thing is, my DSR-11 deck that I bring with me doesn't have an LCD display to show TimeCode, so you can't cue the tape very accurately. I have each film start at 10 seconds into a tape, but there can be a 3 second variance when you cue the tape, then eject it, then put it back in. So I thought the direct-out of FCP would be more contby MitchellRose - Café LA Canopus ADVC-110 - 15 years agoI tour a show which is an evening of my films. I've been showing the films using video tape. But it would seem that it might be better to use a MacBook Pro and go Firewire out from FCP into a Canopus ADVC-110 and on to a projector. It's certainly more cue-able. My question: If I got the Canopus ADVC-110, do I need the power supply or can I just let the bus power it. My primary concern in aby MitchellRose - Café LA Re: STYLE SHEETS - 16 years agoOops... I was trying to post that to FEATURE REQUESTS. Sorry.by MitchellRose - Café LA STYLE SHEETS - 16 years agoThe ability of the 3-Way Color Correction filter to apply itself to 1 or 2 clips ahead is great, but what happens when you want to make a change globally throughout a long project. It?s common to correct your movie and then after playing it back change your mind about a look that you gave to clips. I'm sick of viewing a project the day after I've applied color correction filters to 50 clips, onlby MitchellRose - Café LA Re: Entire Mac Lab Can't Log and Capture - 16 years agoThanks for your help. iMacs is what we got and what we'll have for a long time. I'm lucky, and grateful, that we have them. Colleges aren't rolling in dough. If I had Mac Pros and monitors, I'd have to half my class size. They've been working fine since September. Some machines are at the latest QT, FCP, and everything else, while others are a few months back. Doesn't make a differenby MitchellRose - Café LA Entire Mac Lab Can't Log and Capture - 16 years agoI teach FCP at a college two days a week. While I was away, my students were emailing me complaining that they couldn't Log and Capture in FCP (6.01 & 6.02 variously). So when I got to the Mac Lab I tried it and I couldn't either. I tried 2 DV cameras and 2 FireWire cables on 4 iMacs. The iMacs aren't recognizing the cameras. In System Profiler, it sees the FireWire drives, but not the cby MitchellRose - Café LA Re: DV Decks -- Wisdom Sought - 16 years agoThanks very much for your feedback, friends. Yeah, I'd love to get a DSR11 or two. But after ponying up the dough for six iMacs and FCS2 licenses and Firewire drives and cameras... the dean is just gonna go uh-uh. I know, I know... The cost will be the same in the long run as the cameras for capturing die... but he has to recover from this initial round of sticker shock.by MitchellRose - Café LA DV Decks -- Wisdom Sought - 16 years agoI'm setting up an FCP lab at a university -- an economically challenged university (as most are). Right now they're using cheapo miniDV cameras for capturing and they quickly get trashed. I'm looking for DV decks but I'm seeing nothing. (Happy with my own DSR11, I haven't kept up with these things.) The DSR11, while seemingly now nonexistent, would be too expensive--they'd never go for it. A Sonby MitchellRose - Café LA |
