New Mac Mini (with SSD) ingest super super slow FCP 7.0 - 11 years agoYes the subject says it all. Super Super slow ingesting. Mac Mini 2.5 i5 with 16GB of RAM. One internal 512GD SSD that runs everything - OS 10.8, FCP 7.0, and serves as the scratch disk. Ingesting a 20 minute AVCHD clip to 422LT takes over 1 hour. Or it may just stop/crash about 2/3 way through. Any ideas of what's up? Thanksby Logan6 - Café LA Importing Canon C100 directly into FCP 7 - 11 years agoHi. I'm trying to figure out the best workflow for importing footage off our Canon c100 SD Cards. The c100 has: Compression: MPEG-4, AVC/H.264 File Format: AVCHD Color Space: 4:2:0 SD down Conversion: MPEG2 We can 'Log and Transfer' in FCP 7 just fine (it seems). I'm just wondering what is the best ProRes match for these c100 files. And can you control that setting anyways (LT, Proxy, etby Logan6 - Café LA Re: Two workstations with one media drive or server. Possible? - 11 years agoYup. Thats what it seems. I talked to Dennis Bress last night from iEEi.TV - Maybe you have heard of him - Super nice guy. Anyways, yes, to do it right we are looking at a significant investment - $7500 minimum. It looks like I'll be sticking with the two hard drive system for now but I'm considering a new iMac for workstation #2. Which now brings up a new issue: Whats a drive I can plugby Logan6 - Café LA Re: Two workstations with one media drive or server. Possible? - 11 years agoThank you, by looking at their site it looks like they provide excellent sales support and a quality product. Something I am willing to pay for. But $7500 is about $6000 over what I was expecting to pay. Any other suggestions? Or you just get what you pay for? thanks.by Logan6 - Café LA Re: Two workstations with one media drive or server. Possible? - 11 years agoStrypes, Thank you. The information you provided is incredibly useful. I did not have a chance to check back to LAFCPUG until today and I saw your reply. All I can say is that the internet is amazing. Can you recommend a NAS? Synergy? Thank you again, Jonathanby Logan6 - Café LA Two workstations with one media drive or server. Possible? - 11 years agoHello. Is there a way two FCP 7.0 workstations (in the same room) can access one media source? The research I have so far gathered suggest that a NAS (through gigabyte ethernet cables) would be too slow for video files. ProRes 422LT is what we work with (what our footage is converted to right after the shoot.) What are some solutions? Thanks.by Logan6 - Café LA Audio Track not moving with Video Track the way I want - 12 years agoFCP 7.0 So, we shot with the 60D and then synced the H4N audio file (recorded in stereo but really only used the left channel). so V1 video track is linked with a1 audio track. We trashed the right track. Problem is when I move the video track up to V2 the audio track wants to jump to A3. I want it to move to A2. I use the HPX170 and I think it's great camera for doc work and National Geographic has used my footage from it. It's a very fast camera in that allows you to find your shots quickly and its lightweight so you will not get worn down with a full days worth of shooting. Faiby Logan6 - Café LA Re: Sync Sound Pan export - 12 years agook, thanks. I figured out how to "link each clip, then copy/paste all to a new bin" then I get a new clip. So on this shoot we used two canon 60Ds and one H4N. So I'll work away at the rough cut, but what if I wanted easy access to the other angle (2nd camera?) while still staying in sync with the audio file from the H4N. Sorry so being so vague but I really don't know what I'm lookinby Logan6 - Café LA Sync Sound Pan export - 12 years agoHello, So we shoot with a Canon 60D now and record sound (one lav channel) with a Zoom H4N. I then sync the files in FCP of course. And for whatever reason I feel the need to export this movie as a simple "Quicktime movie" with current settings and then import that file and use that file as my master movie file. So I have two questions. So I'm going to rebuild the whole thing in SD for export to a Widescreen SD DVD. FYI - I shot all my footage with a canon 60D at 24fps and brought it into FCP by ingesting it as ProRes 422 (LT). I'm also buying a bunch of SD stock. And have some H264 SD movie to put in there as well. Work in a SD timeline?by Logan6 - Café LA Up size - then downsize - is FCP smart? - 13 years agoHello, I'm running FCP 7.0. So I'm working in a 1920x1080 timeline with applePro Res 422(LT) as my compressor. Most of my footage was shot in that format. I'm also bringing in a lot of stock video with resolutions lower than that (sometimes as low as 640x360). It also turns out that the final cut needs to be delivered on a SD DVD. So my question is: Can I simply enlarge the lower reby Logan6 - Café LA Re: Gamma all over the place - Color to FCP - 14 years agoI guess since 8-bit YUV is the default render in FCP I need to reset that to render in RGB and that will reset my gamma in order that "Send to Color" sends a rendered file taking on the attributes and user render settings of that file which I intend to export to web and PC monitor (which is RGB?) Thanks.by Logan6 - Color Re: Gamma all over the place - Color to FCP - 14 years agoIt may be something up with FCP. After a few test: - I sent a one small sequence to FCP and it looks good. Grades look pretty darn close. - I'll adjust a secondary or two and send the same sequence to FCP and no grades come over at all, in fact my earlier sequences brought in from color have now reverted and have no grades applied. They are lost. - I quit FCP. Sent the same grade from Coloby Logan6 - Color Gamma all over the place - Color to FCP - 14 years agoHi. I'm having a problem understanding the gamma shifts between Color and FCP. Put it simply, after grading in Color and I send back to FCP, everything looks really really dark in FCP. I found somewhere some guy said to change my gamma settings on primary in to .81818181 and the primary out to 1.222222. This seems to help but it is still fairly far off. And even it this is the correct wayby Logan6 - Color Re: Black Frames - 14 years agoSame problem here. No speed ramps or frame rate changes. Occurs to footage on higher tracks (eg: b-roll I have on top of the interviews). Like Eric said - last two frames are black on random clips. Jonathanby Logan6 - Café LA Re: Making the grade - 14 years agoAwesome thank you. But Custom Gradient? Who what how? Found the "Gradient Colorize" filter and applied to V2. Shaped? How do you shape? Sorry for being so ignorant on this end. But Thank you.by Logan6 - Café LA Making the grade - 14 years agoHi. I'm trying to grade a headshot. Subject is frame 1/3 right and I want to darken the left side of the screen (not straight down but on a diagonal - if that makes any sense). Anyways, I'm using 4 point garbage matte and the feather adjustment within that filter. Maybe you know my problem already but in if you don't then my points for my 960x720 footage are (pt1: -480,-360) (pt2: 200,-360)by Logan6 - Café LA Can't see objects on 3D grid - 14 years agoHi. I can't see any objects on my 3D grid. For example: the boxy camera model that you can grab and rotate around. I can see images I've placed in front view but can't "click" on those and see handles. What am I missing or failing to turn on? Thanksby Logan6 - Motion Re: Best method for export HD movie to DVD - 14 years agoI got a screen shot up. Taken while the movie was in motion. Anyways... you can see the problem. This text grows in size slightly (from 95% to 105% - set in FCP) Also, the regular images of people I have don't look too good either. thanksby Logan6 - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Best method for export HD movie to DVD - 14 years agoNope. The text is 95% white. Just checked my DVCPROHD exported movie and it looks fine. Interesting, I tried to give you a screen shot of the simulation but it only appears on the DVD playback when it is actually playing - when I pause it it looks clear. And Yes, I burned the DVD and watched it projected. It was very jagged. So, exactly what settings would you use in compressor? (all while keeping my 16:9 image by converting it to SD letterbox) Right, I understand it is a huge drop in detail, but this is very obvious jaggies - It should look better. Thanksby Logan6 - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Best method for export HD movie to DVD - 14 years agoHi, I still could use some help. So I exported a 16:9 DVCPro HD 720p file out of FCP as is (using the first menu item: Export > Quicktime Movie (self-contained)). Dragged and dropped that file onto my menu screen in DVD Studio Pro. I set the "16:9 Letterbox" selected under display mode (for that file) in DVD Studio Pro.
