Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoHi all! I know I started all this and then disappeared - didn't mean to hit and run, but my RAID went down yesterday and won't be back up until Monday. I haven't even been able to try out Strypes advice! Harry's success has been incredibly heartening, however - and I second and third his many thanks and offers of car-cleaning on the next go'round! Makes sense on that second encode, Jeff, evby jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoThanks Shane! ;-) It's just a BG plate on to which I am compositing another element. It's for a web-only release, which is why the HDV doesn't concern me. It'll look fine embedded on the website. Yeah, drastic is right! I'm glad it's not just me... I have been Exporting using Quicktime Conversion from my HDV sequence - thanks for your advice, Strypes - I'll give that a shot shortly!by jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoNo, my sequence is set to HDV as that's what I'm editing in. I'm exporting to ProRes from that sequence. I uploaded two still from Photobucket, hopefully this works... Test Still HDV HDV converted to ProRes Look particularly in the water near the drain, and on the edges of the white edges of the sink. Let me know what you guys think - thanks again!by jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoHi guys! Thanks so much for this discussion! This has been a bit perplexing. I tried setting the sequence settings to render high YUV, came up with the same result. Yes, I captured at HDV and I'm now trying to export ProRes422. I've tried exporting in every higher format that makes sense, and I still end up with this resolution problem. I'd be happy to post stills for you guys to look atby jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoyup, tried uncompressed and ran a difference test - pretty much the same result... does anyone think Compressor might do a better job that FCP's internal rendering?by jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoyeah, fair enough - I hear you. I'm just looking for the ProRes output to at least look as good as the HDV source footage - which isn't amazing, of course - but the grain structure is much better and smoother in the HDV. I'm just not sure why the ProRes seems to be compressing it further... Thanks for the response, tho! :-)by jmlpost - Café LA HDV to ProRes422 Render Looks Crappy - 13 years agoHello great LAFCPUG! Oh resource of unlimited knowledge! I've come to pay homage once again at the steps of your temple in great need of advice. I have a project that I shot in HDV, and that's how I've got the project set up. I'm trying to render out some plates for VFX and don't want my VFX guy to have to deal with HDV compression, so I thought I'd just render out in ProRes for him to workby jmlpost - Café LA Re: Color Calibrating 23" Cinema Display - need suggestions - 13 years agoI just got back in from out of town - thanks to all of you for your responses! Joshby jmlpost - Color Color Calibrating 23" Cinema Display - need suggestions - 13 years agoO - great LAFCPUG, once again I turn to you for help and suggestions! I have recently started using COLOR, and as I learn I'm seeing the increasing need to be sure that my display monitor (23" Apple Cinema Display) is at the very least reasonably accurate. I've looked at a couple software-only solutions, as well as sensor based solutions and I'm just not sure what the best thing to use mby jmlpost - Color Re: sorry boss your dog destroyed the project ive been working on for the last two days - 15 years agoyup, Disk Warrior might be able to smooth out software problems, but my bet is you have hardware damage. If DW has allowed you to access and move files, get them off that drive as fast as you can. I just had this happen to a drive of mine, exactly same symptoms (including error message), and every time you try and access files, hear the drive spin up and then suddenly STOP with a 'ca-chunk' souby jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV Reformatting Help (from previous post) - 15 years agoAH - gotcha. that makes total sense... Thanks again for the advice, i'll give it a shot today!by jmlpost - Café LA Re: HDV Reformatting Help (from previous post) - 15 years agoThanks for sniffing this out, Jeff! It all makes sense... I can store uncompressed, but if my system is choking on Pro-Res, won't it choke even more heartily on Uncompressed? What about DVCproHD? Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!by jmlpost - Café LA Re: Order of effects - 15 years agoHi Rick, if it were me, I'd do the slow down-effect first as part of your overall cut. If you are using other software to do the slow-down that's an even bigger reason. Locking your cut for time is pretty standard workflow, then move on to coloring. Lightening would be part of the color grading process.by jmlpost - Café LA HDV Reformatting Help (from previous post) - 15 years agoHello friends!! So I started a few days ago with needing help with re-formatting HDV captured footage to Pro-Res 422 (HQ) for use in Color, and got some wonderful help - but discovered something new that i wanted to see if you guys recognized: I'm relatively new to HDV, but I was cutting in HDV with the intention of finishing the cut and then outputting to Pro-Res for color grading, but i notby jmlpost - Café LA Re: sorry boss your dog destroyed the project ive been working on for the last two days - 15 years agoOften drives that have suffered mechanical damage will be able to access the content structure tree because it's just a little log file that lives at the head of the drive. If you can see the layout in the finder, but cannot ACCESS any of the files (ie. open them or try moving them to another drive), it's likely your drive is toast, even if it mounts and displays the contents. I apologize for taking so long in replying, i got buried in some projects today and was only able to get back around to this just now. I'm currently going through my first attempts at using HDV footage, which i had classically shunned before, but recent demo's changed my mind and I decided to give it a shot. All I'm doing is copy and pasting the clips and then drag them into another track so I've got two identical tracks sitting on top of the other. Upon further inspection, however, for some reason FCP isn't letting put ANY videos in different tracks on top of each other without red-screen-in-canvas-then-crash. This is really weird... I bought a band new Final Cut Studio 2 package a few months ago but haven't used it much since I got it. I've been using FCP for many years and versoins and consider myself a pretty tuned user but I've found FCP6 to be a little buggy in ways I didn't expect and find myself having to restart probably more often than I really should. You have been so brilliantly helpful in the past, and I have yet another question. I was given a bunch of quicktime clips that are MPEG-4 Video format (I think shot on a little flashed based Samsung), 1280x720p, 29.97p and I'm having trouble with them. I've never edited in MPEG-4 format before, is there a trick to it?
