There are better cameras, but they aren't in the budget you listed. Sony's NEX-FS700 will do 1080p60 as well as 120 and 240 fps in burst mode (16 sec and 8 sec respectively) but the camera alone is $8,000. For $5k or less I think you are limited to 720p60 cameras. The exception is the GoPro Hero Black which will do 1080p60, 720p120 and 1440p48 for $400 but I don't know if the GoPro would giveby adkimery - Café LA

60p almost always means 59.94 just like 30 almost always means 29.97. While it is possible with some cameras to record 60.00 and 30.00 it's rare that someone would want to as the 59.94 and 29.97 are standard frame rates for recording in 60Hz countries. I'm inclined to agree with Ethan. I think it will be easier to knock off your Avid rust than it will be to successfully port the project to another NLE. I started an Avid job after 5yrs of only using FCP and Avid came back to me surprisingly quick. Granted, I spent some time going through tutorials on Lynda.com as a refresher, but after a few days of using Avid it was feeling familiar agaiby adkimery - Café LA

It's been a bit since I worked in Color but I don't think Color likes mixed frame rate or mixed raster footage nor does multicam footage. I remember on more than one occasion having to break a project into multiple sequences based on like media types and it can really be a pain when you have two 'incompatible' media types right next to each other in the timeline and you have having to grade themby adkimery - Café LA

I still think we'll see offline, cloud based editing from Avid supported on a variety of devices (including the iPad). The iPad app they sold off only communicated w/their PC consumer products so it makes since that they didn't keep it around. What Avid showed at NAB a few years ago during their Edit Anywhere, on Anything demo is starting to materialize in Interplay Sphere and I hope they kby adkimery - Avid Media Composer

One more thing to try is press "play" on the Z1U *before* launching FCP. Since HDV devices can send out HDV and DV via FW I think FCP can get 'confused' about which signal is potentially coming down the pipe. If the device is already playing back though when FCP launches then there is no room for confusion. If that still doesn't work you'll need to check that the Mac can see thby adkimery - Café LA

You don't even need Avid hardware anymore for I/O. Avid supports the AJA Io Express for capture and monitoring and the Matrox MXO2 Mini for monitoring only. The Avid hardware though will get you some additional hardware acceleration that the 3rd party devices don't provide. -Andrewby adkimery - Café LA

Not that I don't think some basic gestures could be useful for editing but I'm not overly enamored with the idea of UI moving heavily in that direction (at least not w/the current level of the tech). Once you get past a few of the obvious ones (pinch to zoom in/out, swiping to scroll through the timeline, etc.,) you start getting into the realm of unintuitive, arbitrary gestures to do more abstrby adkimery - Café LA - X

FW400 disappeared w/the last gen machines I think and that was all the time the 4 ports on the front showed up (which is much nicer than having to get on all fours repeatedly to connect/disconnect things in the back, IMO). USB 3 would've been nice and as would've eSATA. Yes, I know that's what PCI slots are for but the Mac Pro only has 3 and those get used up very quick (at least they do in myby adkimery - Café LA

As Derek said, horses for courses. Joe, the labor of love I mentioned is a documentary I've been working on the past 4yrs or so in my spare time. My FCP auto save vault points to a different drive than the drive my active FCP project saves to and the nightly back-up of my FCP project goes to yet another drive. Would batch digitizing around 150hrs of footage suck? Yes it would which is why Iby adkimery - Café LA

I'm working under the assumption, dangerous I know, that the OP properly backs-up his data. In that case, a single drive solution is fine, IMO. RAID 1 offers redundancy but it doesn't offer a back-up solution. RAID 1, compared to a single drive, doesn't help one out anymore when it comes to accidentally deleted files, corrupted directories and/or an electronics damaging power surge. G-Tech seems to get recommend a lot and they have an 1TB external for $189. It has FW800, eSATA, and USB 2.0. PowerMax is selling a 1TB CalDigit drive (also a commonly recommended brand) for $208. This drive has USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and FW800. Currently no Macs have USB 3.0, but it's got a max speed faster than current eSATA drives so hopefully Mac support will come sooner rather than later.by adkimery - Café LA

FWIW, I've been using a 24" Dell 2408 side by side w/a 23" ACD for a couple of years now and can't complain. Dialing them in to be pretty close to matching isn't too hard. -Andrewby adkimery - Café LA

Not that I'm an expert on xSan or Unity but I have used them both and find Unity to be more user friendly and more geared for production work where as the xSan is just a SAN. I like what both EditDog and EditShare are trying to do w/FCP, but I feel like it's such a drastic shift from FCP's SOP that getting it adopted by the masses is slim, IMO. Especially with editors that haven't worked on aby adkimery - Café LA

AFAIK Color doesn't like it when a 2nd video card is installed. Color v.1.0.x typically wouldn't even boot up if it detected another video card (even something like an AJA or Blackmagic card in extended desktop mode). -Andrewby adkimery - Color

If you don't want to see a black background in FCP's Canvas window you can change it either white or check board by using the first drop down menu on the right on in the Canvas window. To export w/o a black back ground you'll have to use a codec that supports an Alpha channel such as Animation (and setting the colors to millions of colors+ in your export settings). -Andrewby adkimery - Café LA

A 'magic number' I keep seeing when reading up on archiving in the digital world is to migrate to a new medium every 5 years so you don't end up w/the problems of no longer having the proper hardware/software to read your archive. Recently I was doing some spring cleaning and uncovered about a dozen ZIP disks. I really, really, really doubt there is anything worthwhile on them as I tended to buby adkimery - Café LA
