Color clips appear as frozen still frames - 13 years agoHi, I'm grading a 4K R3D project in Color 1.5.2. I flattened my FCP timeline to a single track without filters/transitions/etc and conformed it to R3D at 4K then used "Send to Color". At first, the project opened fine in Color without any obvious problems. However I'm now in the midst of doing colour correction in Color and some clips are playing/scrubbing on the Color timeline asby Nick Scale - Color RAID for capture scratch or render files? - 14 years agoI'm installing an internal RAID using two SATA drives in my Mac Pro. I'm not using a RAID controller card, I'm just using OS X's RAID utility. For the best performance, should I use this RAID for capture scratch or render files? I can't really see what the deciding factors would be. Does it depend on how much rendering I do? Does it depend on the compression of my rushes? Strypes, you're right it is a question of time and rarely does a job give me the opportunity to "bake in" all of the composites, stills, transitions, non-integer speed changes and pre-grade filters I have in my edit before I grade it. I find this frustrating, to put it mildly. Ultimately, round-trippinby Nick Scale - Color OT: Hello moderator? - 14 years agoI just posted an OT about Apple which was neither critical or derogatory, and it was deleted immediately. Can a moderator please point me in the direction of the board rules that dictate permissible subject matter? Thanks,by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Devil's Advocate asks: Why bother with Color? - 14 years agoThanks for this feedback. Yes the cross talk is very limiting. I will look into Colorista. Stacking layers and filters does become more fiddly than using all the secondaries Color allows, but on the other hand Color is a separate app and round-tripping is frustrating. Overall I agree with the first point made by bigbossbmb that basically I just don't need it that bad. And I agree with stby Nick Scale - Color Re: Gurus! This slight "over-cranking" gives the impression of subtle slow motion. This means the footage will play slower but there will be no generational loss, no frame-blending and none of the other side-effects of trueby Nick Scale - Café LA Devil's Advocate asks: Why bother with Color? - 14 years agoHi, This is very much a "devil's advocate" question but I'm curious to hear your opinions... I'm grading two short films that were shot on RED, one at 4K and the other at 2K. Final deliverables for distribution will be 1080p H.264 QuickTimes. In the past, I've done all my colour correction in FCP using the 3-Way Color Corrector. This seems to have all the functionality of Colorby Nick Scale - Color Re: Frame Viewer won't show Current Frame w/o Filters - 14 years agoSolved it! The problem was my footage is on V1 and I have a Slug on V3 with a Mask Shape filter on it as a widescreen mask. So when Frame Viewer shows Current Frame w/o Filters, it removes the Mask Shape from the Slug in V3 and this therefore results in a black frame blocking V1. Duh. I've now nested the sequence and put the widescreen mask on the parent sequence.by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Frame Viewer won't show Current Frame w/o Filters - 14 years agoNo, the configuration shown is V-Split, left is Current Frame, right is Current Frame w/o Filters. It's not possible to slide one side over the other.by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Motion Tab Skews When Making Keyframes - 14 years agoYeah it's a bug in FCP that's been there as long as I've been using it (since version 5). It's incredible they haven't fixed it...by Nick Scale - Café LA Frame Viewer won't show Current Frame w/o Filters - 14 years agoHi, When I use the Frame Viewer to preview some colour correction, it shows me the frame with filters but it won't show me the frame without filters. It just appears as a black frame. I'm editing ProRes HQ 720p square pixel at 25 fps. I have over 3.5GB free memory and hard disk under 60% full. Any ideas what the problem is? Thanks! EDIT: added screengrab.by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Cropping while maintaining image size - 14 years agoI found a plugin that does the job: DH_Box by Digital Heaven. 20 bucks and exactly what I needed!! Cheers, Nickby Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Cropping while maintaining image size - 14 years agoBut that assumes there is some margin around each of the images or that there is a border between them. The images are lined up exactly adjacent to one another. It is possible that I could use this method to mask each track individually, but it is very time consuming and my edit consists of numerous complex split screens similar to this. Is there really no "clip" filter like thatby Nick Scale - Café LA Cropping while maintaining image size - 14 years agoHi, I'm looking for a way to simultaneously crop an image by a certain amount, then stretch up the image to compensate so the resulting "cropped" image is still the same size as the original. I seem to remember in Adobe Premiere there is a filter called "clip" (confusingly enough) which does this. In context: I have 81 images in a perfect 9x9 split screen, but now I nby Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Distorted text becomes curved in FCP - 14 years agoGot it! Thanks Andy, your Better 3D plugin worked a treat! I was beginning to think I was asking something stupid. The FCP Distort settings, the Basic 3D filter and even CGM's Basic 3D filter all add this same curvature. It's like it's intended behaviour... crazy!by Nick Scale - Café LA Distorted text becomes curved in FCP - 14 years agoHi I've generated some Text in FCP and used the Distort tool to make the text lie along a perspective line in my footage. But when I render it (or add Drop Shadow or other filters to it), the Text has a definite curve to it, in addition to the basic perspective distortion. Does anybody know why it's doing this? (Obviously I could do this in Motion, or use an imported image, but I'd lby Nick Scale - Café LA Time filters preview as green footage - 15 years agoThis might just be an idiot check but... When I apply any of the Time Video Filters (Echo, Scrub, Strobe, Trails, Widetime) to a clip on the timeline, the footage goes green in the Canvas, as if the R and B channels have been removed from the image. When I try to play the clip under Unlimited RT, it still appears green and no Time filter effects are visible. I have a 60min DVD with two tracks - a main film and a trailer - both pre-encoded in Compressor to Best Quality DVD MPEG2 and Dolby Digital Professional 2.0 audio. There is one menu with simple buttons to both tracks. There are devices, such as the AJA IO HD, which do this. But for a Mac Pro I'd recommend an internal card such as Kona or Blackmagic. If you mean simply playing the file off the hard disk in realtime, then any Firewire 400, 800, eSATA or even USB 2 would be adequate, but I stress you must allow overhead for playby Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Exporting audio to Logic Pro - 15 years agoYeah, sorry should have said: I am using Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2, Final Cut Pro 6.0.4 - so the latest versions of both...by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: 720p footage to Hard Drive - 15 years agoGoogle the "AJA Data Rate Calculator" and download it. It'll tell you this...... 6 hours of 720p24 DVCProHD is 132.71 GB assuming 4-track audio. Datarate is 5.76 MB/s. Basically any hard drive can handle that, but you should allow a sizeable overhead for comfortably editing multiple tracks of video.by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: Exporting audio to Logic Pro - 15 years agoHmmm, yeah he's on Logic 8 and I've done some reading around now and you're right - it should be fine. He also has Cubase which also had a problem with the file. So it must be the file. I've tried to open the OMF in Soundtrack Pro. But nothing happens. Have you tried exporting them as Quicktime Movies first, then use Quicktime Pro or Compressor to render them out as TGA sequences? Usually I work with ProTools with Automatic Duck which can import OMFs. Unfortunately Logic Pro does not import OMFs. How can I work around this? Is there a route by exporting to Soundtrack Pro first then exporting from that to Logic Pro? (FCP 5, DV PAL sequences.) If we export an EDL from this edit, will it conform correctly? Does it matter that the clips are nested? I guess there are a lot of factors involved, I'll keep an eye out next time it happens...by Nick Scale - Café LA Re: sound breaking up - 15 years agoIt could be hardware related. Do you get the same issues if you swap Audio Playback to Built-in Audio rather than via your Kona? (Assuming it's currently going out your Kona, if not, then swap it the other way!) But the waveform issues sound like a data problem. For starters, try trashing your waveform cache.by Nick Scale - Café LA |
