Re: BPAV files Xcam - 15 years agoI import and convert all of our XDCAM footage independently of FCP. To accomplish this you need both the Sony Clip Browser software (version 2x) or ShotPut, and the Sony XDCAM Transfer software. This is the software that FCP evokes when you go to file/import/Sony XDCAM in FCP. If you simply copied the BPAV from the SXS you omitted the first step. Since this is basically the camera negatiby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: OT: The New Age of Broadcast Market - 15 years agoOK, now I see why we don't debate business issues on this forum... Content is NOT the king - CASH IS! Having a debate about the quality of Youtube videos vs. theatrically released movies or broadcast TV is just mental masturbation, rather pointless. I don't imagine that the 600 EA employees lost their jobs because of a lack of quality. To Joe's point "It all still falls on tby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: OT: The New Age of Broadcast Market - 15 years agoI understand that LAFCPUG is here to help users, and it serves that role very well. It's kind of a catch 22, the people who's advice I trust the most are people who have helped me work through whatever technical issue I may have had in the past. Sure there are other websites that are oriented more towards business issues, although I don't know of any for our industry, but I like to talk and lby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: OT: The New Age of Broadcast Market - 15 years agoWow, touchy subject. If most of the post facilities who work on broadcast shows were honest they would tell you they have single digit profitability if that. Sure editors, compositors and colorists make some money. But a growth market this is not. Personally I find the improved level of quality on many of the cable channels intriguing. Not sure if the companies producing it are makingby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoI agree, however a significant difference is that the reason the Aja ioHD does the heavy lifting is because it HAS to. It is connected via firewire and that is way too narrow a pipeline to transfer any significant amount of data. I was very surprised to see that the ioHD was a firewire device. Whereas the MXO2 is a PCie device and can therefore handle significantly more data, they calim it wby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoIsn't the MXO2 a capture card? In the same way that the Aja io HD is? In fact if you can believe the literature it has far more goes intos and goes outtas than the Kona3. I guess what I'd like to hear from someone I trust on this forum is that it works as advertised.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoShane Ross Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- But the MXO 2 only sends bars to an HDMI monitor, while the MXO sends bars to DVI. Unless you can properly calibrate a monitor to bars, then it is pretty useless for broadcast. Decklink would work. Cheap. But if you are CCing for broadcast, gotta get a broadcast HD monitor. eCinema has good ones. ---------------by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoJoe, did you, Shane or both of you beta test the MXO and/or MXO2? If you did what do you think of the MXO2? Just by reading through the literature it appears that the MXO2 might be what I'm looking for. It would be helpful if anyone who has experience with the MXO2 could share their thoughts. Thanksby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoJoe that's part of my dilemma, there is no longer a deck to go out to. We will be delivering LO4 tapes for Blu-ray mastering or to IVC for output for broadcast - which is certainly where I see a potential for problems. That is also why I asked about the Intensity Card. I purchased one to capture HDV to DVCProHD but HDMI does not support TC and I could not get, nor could I find anyone elseby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Color Correction Workflow - 15 years agoWe recently switched to XDCAM HD and are doing away with tape and most of the ancillary equipment that goes alone with it. Having said that, what's a good cost effect workflow for color correcting HD? What would be a good flat panel monitor to use? Since we will no longer have a Kona3 (SDI-HD) to feed it can we use DVI directly out of the ATI X1900? But if this is the only time you'll be working in this format its probably not necessary, the Sony Clip Browser software should work.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Upgrading to Leopard? - 15 years agoWe have a mixture of Tiger and Leopard machines and there are some quirky networking issues although I'm not sure which OS to attribute them too. One disappointment is that the latest version of FxPlug only runs on Leopard.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA XDCAM to HDV output to HVR25U - 15 years agoWe have been producing content with the Sony Z1U, editing natively in FCP 6x, outputting to HDV tape with the Sony HVR25U that was sent to the DVD producer for SD DVD's. Maybe not the best workflow but worked moderately well. Recently we replaced our Z1's with a couple EX3's and an EX1 and edited XDCAM natively in FCP. What happened to it? It looked very cool and might be a nice alternative for anyone who doesn't want to spend the time and money it takes to set up Final Cut Server. Anyone tried this?by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: getting a huge drive array - 15 years agoHi J, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Sounds like you might be close to making your decision. I think we spent approximately $25K for 16TB's of managed storage. That price included the Fiber channel switch, five FC host bus adapters, FiberJet file system, and enough fiber to install five system in a 2500 square foot office. I divided the decision to grow our company into two keyby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Final Questions before starting film project - 15 years agoThe answer to which ProRes Codec to use also depends on the final output. If your finishing to HDCAM SR I would recommend medium quality ProRes (140Mb) but if you want to output to film then I recommend ProRes HQ. But if that's the case I would only accept HDCAM SR Dual link 4:4:4 from Technicolor. Unless they are providing you with an offline version HDCAM and then conforming using theirby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: getting a huge drive array - 15 years agoThis is probably more than your looking for - We have one of these and will be getting another in the next couple of months. When we purchased the first RAID we must have had 15 to 20 Lacie drives connected to three FCP work stations. It was a mess and difficult to find the assets you needed when you needed them. We originally started looking for a 4 to 8 bay tower we could stripe RAIDby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: HDV Hell - 15 years agoSorry to hear about your frustration... Its difficult to troubleshoot your problem with the information you've provided. A couple of things to look out for -- make sure that your sequence setting is 1440x1080 60i HDV. You should alos create a test DV sequence to see if you can output that to test communication and operation of the deck. Its been my experience that if the sequence settingby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: exporting a range of stills - 15 years agoTo ad one step to Joe's method: In Photoshop goto File/Scripts/Export Layers to Files. It allows you to create a new folder and name the series of stills and batch export them to that folder. I used to provide a single Photoshop file as Joe suggested but I was always amazed at how they could somehow screw it up. If you haven't checked out QTSynce I'd recomend it. I have not used it for anything other than a small test and its hard to believe that something this simple, fast and free could be this good, but the little I've played with it - WOW. Have others tried this yet? I'm interested in feedback from others who have tried this.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: no video scrubbing w/ viewer in external monitor - 15 years agoI'm not sure if this is the case, but having "show excess luma" on in the canvas disables scrubbing video. One thing that I noticed is that when I did an "Export self contained" of an HDV clip the timecode wass not accurate. I suspect that it has something to do with the long GOP of HDV. I'm curious if anyone else is using this product. It certainly looks like a great product.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: OT: iTunes 8 is horrendous - 15 years agoI hear/feel your pain. I don't care a rats ass about the iPhone or iTunes with the exception that every time they upgrade either one there is a strong potential that it requires an upgrade in Quicktime which also has a strong probability of screwing up FCP.
