Specs for scanning photographs - 13 years agoHi everyone! Okay, so firstly, I DID SEARCH THE FORUM ON THIS, and Googled and whatever, but I thought a post here might help me with a question I can't seem to get a definitive answer on. I am hopeful some of you have experience with this (which you probably do). I am currently cutting a Red feature (4K 2:1) and we will probably be finishing either 2K or 1080, both for 2.39. I have learnby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Quicktime to iPad conversion - 14 years agoHi gang -- I have searched the Forum on this, but I would be very surprised if hasn't been covered already. But just in case... I have two clients who want their trailers to be viewable on their iPads. I want the trailers to look great, play back all the way through, etc., but I've never had to do this before. I've looked around all over the web, I have used Quicktime Pro, MPEG-Streamcliby Karl Hirsch - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: OT: monitoring and the end of CRT? - 14 years agoWell, that's the strange thing. The PVM was rock solid re Nattress (as rock-solid as can be anyway). When projected... for example, think of a side-light on the side of a person's nose. Severe horizontal lines there, super-evident, unacceptable. That artifact was not present in my suite. Your suggestion poses the question. Say I have both monitors. Say an image is good on one, but not goby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: OT: monitoring and the end of CRT? - 14 years agoOMG -- I apparently started a flame war! Golly! Well, this thread has been very useful to me, but let me throw something else in here. My issue all about plain old SD monitoring. It's not really about color timing (or "grading" as it's now called), but more about interlacing issues, how things might really look for the enduser, that sort of thing. So... I was at Best Buy a few weeks ago and I noticed that they don't sell tube-based TV's anymore. All of them were flat-screen (LCD, plasma, whaetver). Same thing at Target. It got me thinking that it will not be long before people just won't have CRT televisions at all anymore, and LCD etc will be the standard in offices and homes. I wanted to ask some advice. My studby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: OS upgrade before I leap? - 15 years agoHey guys, I'm on 10.5.5 powering Kona LHe (because 10.5.6 was all bugged out). Now 10.5.7 is here, as is a new Quicktime. Has anyone had any issues with the new QT or the new OS?by Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: DVCAM deck freezes FCP6 - trashing Quicktime receipts? - 15 years agoHey Derek -- I am trying to be better about reporting results, just in case anybody cares. I trashed Quicktime receipts, exactly per Apple's instructions. Also trashed FCP prefs just in case. The DSR-11 now works like a charm...! Huh! Anyway... thanks very much! Kby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: DVCAM deck freezes FCP6 - trashing Quicktime receipts? - 15 years agoHey Derek -- Yes, they did hook it up to an FCP system, everything worked perfectly for them. They are not in town, and they let me talk them through the whole process to make sure. I was really hoping it was a fried firewire port or something like that, but no... which is why I'm now looking at the system... ?????...! thanks! kby Karl Hirsch - Café LA DVCAM deck freezes FCP6 - trashing Quicktime receipts? - 15 years agoHey all -- This was on an older thread, but the problem was not resolved... so I thought I'd start a new one. I've had a few weirdo issues with my DSR-11 and my new Mac Pro. The latest is that when the deck is hooked up to the Mac Pro, via Firewire/iLink, FCP will not open, just a beach ball. Disconnect the DSR-11, FCP continues and opens. If I connect it when FCP is open, the Log/Capby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: FCP6 not recognizing my DVCam - 15 years agoThanks for writing back, Russ! I'll start a new thread then... take care! kby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: FCP6 not recognizing my DVCam - 15 years agoHi Russ -- I know this thread is a little old, but I figure better this than start a new one. I've had a few weirdo issues with my DSR-11 and my new Mac Pro. The latest is that when the deck is hooked up to the Mac Pro, FCP will not open, just a beach ball. If I connect it when FCP is open, the Log/Capture window will not open, more beach ball. Then if I disconnect, Log/Capture will open.by Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoIt has been ticked! In FCP, great advice -- there is a gamma correction option, when set to "approximate" it looks much better. The only part that has not been solved is what the image looks like through the Kona out to my monitor. It still has that "wrong-looking" darkness to it. Perhaps I can contact Rudy and see if he has any thoughts. thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!by Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoAHA! Actually, it was "Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility," in the Preferences, that put the footage back the way I think it's supposed to be. It looks just fine now. Well that solved that little curiosity. THANKS!!! Now, of course, I went back to the original project in FCP. Is there some sort of "gamma display" checkbox somewhere that I don't know about? Iby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoHey Vance -- OK... so, the AJA TV utility showed the "darker" image... which made me think that I am over-worked and there's nothing wrong at all, and I'm just embarrassing myself. So I investigated something pretty simple. Do the same Quicktime movies look exactly the same, on the exact same monitors, but played from different machines? I swapped out the Mac Pro (10.5.5) with mby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoWait -- correction -- I checked this again and I was wrong -- in Quicktime Player -- in the machine with 10.5.5 -- the darkness is also there.by Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoYES. Let me be more specific -- I am using a DSR-11 and a DVCAM PAL tape. The DSR-11 is hooked up via composite to a broadcast monitor, and is hooked up to the machine via Firewire. Obviously the DSR-11 is set to PAL. Via composite, the PAL tape looks fine. In FCP, the capture window shows me the video -- it appears noticably darker. But here's the other weird part -- if I send the same video out from the "suspect machine" via Firewire, through a deck, to the same external monitor, the video looks fine. This is what got me thinking that another machine might make it look right, which it did. What are your thoughts? thanks! kby Karl Hirsch - Café LA PAL video appears darker than it really is...? OS 10.5.5 - 15 years agoHey all -- Using OS 10.5.5 and FCS2. Importing PAL video via Firewire, and it looks considerably darker than it really is. Darker in the capture window, in the canvas, and via external monitor through a Kona LHe. I tested this out using another system running 10.4.X -- and the exact same footage looks perfectly fine, normal brightness, all is just fine. So (I think) the capture is workby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: mouse freeze with 10.5.6 - 15 years agoHey Jas -- Thanks for commenting, glad to hear I'm not the only one. I also found this thread: I certainly hope the fix it! Otherwise I will try to downgrade to 10.5.5. thanks again! kby Karl Hirsch - Café LA mouse freeze with 10.5.6 - 15 years agoHowdy all -- I just got a brand new Mac Pro, and I am having mouse-freeze problems. If I walk away from the machine for twenty minutes (for a render or whatever else), the mouse functionality gets wiggy, and the only way to repair it is to hard-restart using the power button. Obviously, I'm not really excited about doing this over and over again... something's wrong. I have repaired permiby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: "film gate" plug-in? - 15 years agoHi Luna -- No...! I did take a look at some of the suggestions here in the thread, but none of them quite did what I was looking for. Grafixjoe's suggestion on, basically, manually building this stuff, could be right, but only in the hands of a much more advanced visual effects artist. My experiments looked like total garbage. The primary effect that I really want to achieve is the &quby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: Simple Video Out problem - 15 years agoHi Andreas and Koz -- Yes, Andreas is right, that's the reason I am using SimpleVideoOut. I tried an alternate cable and an alternate deck, same thing. I also tested my Intel Macbook Pro -- which runs the last version of FCP5 and does not have Kona drivers -- and for the most part it worked fine. I had some trouble a few times, but the laptop was better. Curiously, I did another test oby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Re: Simple Video Out problem - 15 years agoI was asking specifically about Simple Video Out because, although the application was certainly written over lunch, it is very useful in striping DVCAM tapes with specific timecode (starting at 00:58:00:00, for example). That's all I use it for... and they're just not talking with each other any more. To answer your question though, Edit To Tape works *most* of the time. Sometimes it does nby Karl Hirsch - Café LA Simple Video Out problem - 15 years agoHey everyone -- Lately I have experienced a problem with Simple Video Out. I use this application for only one reason -- when I lay off to tape, this is the only way I can pre-stripe tapes, and have my program start at Hour 1. This has been very reliable, but recently, the program has stopped speaking with the deck. NOBODY? Really?? Oh well...!by Karl Hirsch - Café LA "film gate" plug-in? - 16 years agoHey everyone -- I have been looking for a plug-in (FCP or AE) for forever, so I thought that perhaps someone here might have some advice. The effect is something that makes the image appear as if it is film, coming through a projector, but slipping out of the gate, and for lack of a better word "flipping" vertically on the screen. I suppose this situation needs that special filter called "Ass Plus Chair." Thanks for the advice! And Koz -- I hear ya, but I am absolutely certain this one was not "planned."
