PAL to NTSC... - 12 years agoHi there gurus I have a project with many formats including PAL, with which I've never worked. I would like to convert all of the PAL masters to NTSC before starting the editing sequence. Additionally, the tapes are "one-of-a-kind" for the client. they were hand delivered to me and I cannot ship them out for conversion. Hardware? software? tricks? treats? Thanks. Best regards,by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: oldies, but goodies... - 12 years agoHi there I guess I'm one of those folks who drives fast on a race track and closer to the speed limit on public roads...meaning, (should there be one here), that I like to know the terrain before I start the engine. I certainly could have opened things up and given it a shot, but I wondered if anyone else could remember having been down this road. I dimly recall some issues with OS 10.4 and FCby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: oldies, but goodies... - 12 years agoActually, Nick, that's exactly the point. I have not yet done so...I simply wondered if things would be stable enough in that OS to change a couple of things and print to tape a show for a very good client. Thanks. I suppose I should have been clearer. Best regards,by Frank Meek - Café LA oldies, but goodies... - 12 years agoHi there In responding to a longtime client about portions of an archived project I completed in 2003, (in FCP 3), I indicated to him that I needed to do some research about retrieving and re-editing pieces of this long-forgotten work. Hence this query to the gurus: I have FCP 3.4 on a G-4 Powerbook that has since been "upgraded" to "Tiger," from the original 10.2.8, (whatby Frank Meek - Café LA SCROLLING TIMELINE! - 17 years agoI erringly mis-posted this the other day, sorry. This likely has been requested in the past, but it's still a cogent feature to be repeated for those who may be watching: SCROLLING TIMELINE!by Frank Meek - FCP Feature Requests Best output for iDVD - 15 years agoHi there I don't often use iDVD, but there are moments when clients want "high quality" one off's. What is the best setting for export out of FCP for this? Or, is there one? thanks,by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: superimposing an arrow - 16 years agoIf you're running an older OS, then go to Apple>System Prefs> International>input menu, tick the box next to "Character Palette" and the character palette icon should appear to the right of the LEFT help bar at the top of your screen. Click on this as necessary to use this very helpful tool. Hope this helps.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: Help with setting up semi professional monitor - 16 years agoHi there Another suggestion that may help, mentioned in these posts before...Tiffen makes a little known and advertised "viewing filter," more accurately a No. 5 Blue Viewing Filter, (about 35-40 bucks) which, while it will not create a more accurate monitor output or improve your signal transmission, it will allow you to more accurately set up your monitor or TV when these lack a blueby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: Source Tape problem... - 16 years agoThanks, Koz, I'm on Firewire Boulevard. I'll let you know how it goes when I hit an off ramp.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: Source Tape problem... - 16 years agoThe "production company," such as it is (or was), is no longer in the vicinity, which frankly I can understand, if this is an example of its work. And the owner, according to the client, has had a "breakdown." Well, you get the drift here and the camera is also both unknown and unavailable. To your more technical questions, yes, it will play on the Sony DSR 1800 to the moby Frank Meek - Café LA Source Tape problem... - 16 years agoHi there I have the client you've all had. You know the one...the one who tells you at the first meeting that all the production values were first rate and that the tapes are all perfect. Well, other than the 32 K audio, the absent gray chart or SMPTE bars, the absent 30 to 60 second pre-roll or post-roll, the focus hunt on key shots and that one B-roll tape, so essential to the story, (in thby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: Contracts... - 16 years agoHi there, My "neck of the woods" for this edit is Idaho and my chances of finding a media savvy attorney here are remote, at best. Also, this is an area which is in many respects still run by folks who see laws as enemies of the people and rules as things to which one must abide "when you travel elsewhere." If I were home in Colorado, this would not be an issue. So, I suppby Frank Meek - Café LA Contracts... - 16 years agoHi there, I've been working for some years with a handshake, a wink and a simple contract for customers who have been honest, (for the most part), and as casual as I in business. BUT, I am entertaining a client of whose motives I am less charmed. And, in short, I need a functioning, well-wrought and encompassing contract format if I am to continue with this potentially profitable edit. This useful tool I have used often but my "screenshot" is always a PDF file. While this has worked well for some applications, I would like to be able to make this picture a TIFF, PNG or JPEG file as necessary for my desired purposes. How do I set these preferences? Thanby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: OT: Camera Carry-on - 16 years agoHi there, I've traveled a bit and I always carry gear onboard. The problem is less that it may be damaged in flight, (and I agree with the pelican case theory), than that your stuff, (which you will presumably need sometime before your tickets expire or you do), may end up in New Dehli instead of New York or in a video chop shop in the basement of the terminal. I''ll take my chances buying newby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: OT - getting shocked by everything! - 17 years agoFor most editing stations this static shock stuff is relatively harmless, but if you spend any time in a master control suite in a broadcast facility (office based or mobile truck), or near a satellite uplink site, then it becomes more problematical. I have seen switchers and TBC's go nuts with an errant spark from a careless tech or director (less likely). And, I've seen uplink glitches from tby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: QuickTime question... - 17 years agoKoz, Thanks for the imput. I, too, have followed these machinations. My gear is currently very happy and I shall see that it stays so. There will be no cross-dressing of applications.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: QuickTime question... - 17 years agoThanks Joey. I appreciate the information.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: QuickTime question... - 17 years agoHi there, The link in question, (the latest incident to prompt this inquiry), is the Wayne Granzin "ghost: video posted elsewhere on this current forum page, (understandinc.com). Also, no, I am not attempting to play WMV's, (with VLC and others this is actually less problematic than my issues with QT). But, considering the rather basic nature of the questions asked here at times, I undersby Frank Meek - Café LA QuickTime question... - 17 years agoGurus all, While this does not seem to be an impediment to my editing or output, I occasionally get this message when trying, for instance, to play a QuickTime link. I assume this means I should perhaps upgrade to the 21st century version of QT, (I currently run 6.5.3). Any suggestions on a translation of this message: "QuickTime is missing software required to perform this operation. The one I prefer is the Nattress Film Look series...inexpensive, very adaptable and powerful with a wide range of options, all with a great result and excellent product support. Keep your footage 30fps interlaced and you have many output options for final release.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: grey squares when I print to tape - 17 years agoBe careful in the future if you're going to an external HD for your work, (which incidentally is highly recommended for all of the media files, keeping the project files on the G4). These should be run ONLY out of the PC slot on the left of your PB with an appropriate card for this. This card typically has both FW800 and FW400 slots for both media (800) and backsup, (400). FCP doesn't like them...use a comma instead.by Frank Meek - Café LA Re: powerbook work flow - 17 years agoDH That is exactly what I mean. There are numerous issues, many talked about here, (check the search function), about the negative effects of having the deck and storage drives "daisy-chained" on the same FW port. It's always better to separate these and the PC card will do just that on the older PB's. I have had success with the method I described, but I suspect that there are other fby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: powerbook work flow - 17 years agoOn the older G4 PB's there is a PC card slot into which you can install an appropriate card ($50-70) with 800 and 400 FW connections. This, in combination with a reliable external hard drive (s) is a very stable system. This method allows deck connection to the rear FW PB port and media and backup drives to the separate PC card slot, avoiding deck-storage "confusion" in data transmissby Frank Meek - Café LA Re: POLL : Do Lacies Actually Suck Or Not? - 17 years agoI'll throw my stats into the hat...three LC's D2X250G, plenty of use on a PC card on a G4 PB, oldest from 2003.
