The XL2 has 16:9 CCDs...a 960x480 image is recorded on the dv tape. Your end up with a PROPER and TRUE 16x9 image. When you capture it in FCP and tag it as anamorphic, it formats it properly to fit your screen.

It is recorded to tape anamorphically. Stretched. When you capture it you simply inform the computer this is anamorphic footage and it will format it to the proper frame size. it is not compressed on the tape.

Well, you are taking that nice, big animation compressed graphic and dropping it into a 5:1 compressed DV timeline. It is bound to look like crud in that format. DV is notoriously bad with titling and graphics. The solution that most people find work for them is to take the DV cut, drop it into an 8-bit uncompressed timeline and render...THEN add the title and graphics. They show up much clea

FCP 4.5 and more specifically QuickTime 6.5 doesn't support more than two audio channels. So what you need to do is do one pass video and CH 1 & CH 2. Then do another pass audio only, CH3 & CH4, reconnecting wires if you have to...which may be the case.

Doesn't the Kona 2 do realtime upconverts from DVCPRO HD to 8-bit and 10-bit Uncompressed HD? All you should have to do is drop the DVCPRO HD cut into an 8-bit uncompressed sequence...or so I hear. That is one of the selling points of that card. Or am I mistaken?

What machine are you on? What version of OS, FCP, etc... What format is your footage? What kind of deck? How are you capturing?

Depends on your workflow. If you will be going to an Avid at any point (such as going to an Avid Symphony to online) the get Avid. If you will be doing it all yourself, then FCP might be for you.

No, but I have been thru several spotting sessions for TV dramas and comedies, and, using an Avid which also did not allow playback to continue while you tried to use another part of the computer, the composer either took notes or had a laptop.

No, there isn't. And if this is a spotting session, you really shouldn't take your attention away from FCP. The solution is to have another computer, like a laptop, to use excel.

Ah...QUANTEL Paintbox. I am too used to people asking about small FCP systems that I tend to forget the big stuff... It was working now isn't...try trashing the prefs? FCP rescue is da bomb. Repair permissions...lets go for the easy stuff first.

What Andy said. The DVX-100a doesn't have a 16x9 chip in it, but rather letterboxes the footage. It is even referred to as "the letterbox format" in it's literature. By the look of things the VX2000 also letterboxes. Looks like they have different ideas about the dimensions of the letterbox. Next time, shoot 4x3 on both and letterbox in post. Not familiar with Paintbox, but that might not be the issue. But just for my sake, what is it and how are you capturing this footage into FCP? What is the format of this footage? DVCAM? 8-bit uncompressed? What system are you running? What computer, OS version, FCP version, etc. Is this footage on your main system drive, or separate drive? How is that drive formatted? Timecode window burn footage usually means a cut that has that for reference for the producers, or as reference footage a stock footage company will send that you order the master footage from...using those numbers. What is your footage?

Beware any Avid effects (like mattes, animates and 3D Warps), Boris effects or any effects that aren't straight dissolves. They will not transfer. But other than that, all the layers transfer flawlessly.

This all sounds good, but yes, don't go to straight 24fps, but rather to 23.98fps. If your footage was telecined to HD, that is the frame rate. And FCP cannot read the ALE file...thus the reason for the existance of Cinema Tools. THis all sounds right...What is happening to your numbers? Where are thry going off? right from the start?

Karl, DVCPRO HD runs at 59.94 fps...basically 30fps, not 24 or 23.98. Yes, if are are stuck offlining on an iMac, make DVCAM dubs with matching code. and forget the EDL...just take the project file, media manage the cut so that it will only capture the footage needed and re-capture the DVCPRO HD masters. Are you sure you can't buy a G5?

This is somthing that should have been planned from the start. Then you could shoot your actor against a Green or Blue screen and easily key him out. But now...with a shot of a guy and a regular background, there is nothing to do but go frame-by-frame and matte him out. the 8-point garbage matte comes standard, but really won't do what you need. Yes, it does. FW 800 for DVCPRO HD, but higher than that and you will need an external SATA array AT LEAST...fibrechannel recommended. Oh yeah, and an HD color correction monitor, another $3000. At least your media is still there. many people have experienced that when they do this, media from the cut had been deleted. And yes, this is what they mean. The way it acts is so...sporatic. Either it works perfectly, or doesn't. Might be a "phase of the moon" thing...

Your capture drive might be getting full. You need to leave 10% free. So 20 G free if you are using a 200 gig drive.
