From FCP to AVID - your experience* - 10 years ago
Has anyone undertaken work on an Avid when their up-til-then full time editing axe was FCP? How did you bring yourself up to speed in the shortest amount of time, how did it work out? How similar did you find the cross-over or comparison of the two programs? Which tutorials bought you up to speed quickest and to what level? I'm ripping vids off youtube but am also curious regards first-hand exby bluey - Avid Media Composer

they were converted via StreamClip, in the finder and QT player they look fine, yet in the FCP canvas they appear stretched any ideas?by bluey - Café LA

I had transcoded the clips to a different aspect ratio other than the original format. Reconnecting the media to versions which have been re-exported to match the initial aspect ratio, appears to have has solved the issue. Although it seems others have had the same issue for different reasons, if the issue was to crop up again in another circumstance it'd be good to know of an analysis. Bluby bluey - Café LA

I ripped some content off youtube and transcoded the clips via streamclip to quicktime for FCP, only i notice the footage is darker on canvas when playing, then when you pause the playhead the clip goes back to it's 'normal' initial grade. The difference is akin to crushing the blacks slightly and/or lowering the mid-tones. Any ideas as to the cause of this or of any workarounds, amendments?by bluey - Café LA

i've seen some **** in my time but this takes the biscuit lock stock and barrel !!! even in the email exchange featured in that article the 'competing' company owner openly mocks S's claim to the effect of "i look forward to making more great plugins together" my heads just exploded. possibly one of the most absurd things i'e ever seen or heard of in my entire life.by bluey - Café LA

no. surprisingly. i was just aghast that an Apple store would suggest such a thing. i bought a remplacement soon after. in theory it could have worked, apparently. although in response i kidnapped a tiger from a near-by traveling circus, rocked up in a flat-back van, reversed into their lobby hallway and opened the doors. the tiger ravaged the entire store killed 6 employees and then ran a mocby bluey - Café LA

i once went to a certified Apple store after accidentally spilling some coke over my keyboard, it was suggested that i hold it by the usb ports and dunk it in warm water, then place upside down to dry. this in theory would have dissolved the sugar/stickiness. true story.by bluey - Café LA

. . . they don't have watermarks or x's over their trial versions anymore? --- i knew someone once who exported the clip with the filter utilised to quicktime 'hardcoding' the effect onto the shot, as when the trial period runs out the lines or logo/watermark appear on the clip. not sure if that would be considered ethically sound though, Bluey,by bluey - Café LA

you can achieve that exact effect tweaking the warp/ripple-esq filter parameters via one of the Sapphire plugins. they're not cheap but you could always do a rental, Bluey,by bluey - Café LA
footage offline in clip thumbnail on timeline, FCP7 - 10 years ago
The footage has the red/black offline notice in the clip thumbnail on timeline, although the clips clearly contain their content and i can edit/work with the rushes, How can i clear the offline notice in the clip? click the playhead sync button in the middle above the multiclip viewer, select audio, all. you could also apple-L separate the audio and video tracks, that may help Bluey,by bluey - Café LA

If it's not there in the final QT exports is it really a problem? Although i'd imagine it to be slightly irritating if previewing a sequence to a client via your monitor, in my experience this is a common playback issue on the Canvas only. Just in case i'd also double check your frame-rates/footage and sequence settings and ensure the correct match, Bluey,by bluey - Café LA

. . no but you need to worry about your western digital drive - when i was editing overseas with that drive and my laptop, it failed - in my experience those drives are awful, unreliable liabilities, especially if bus-powered. but no - the scanners do not effect laptops/computers/hard drives, Bluey,by bluey - Café LA
