Re: Avid goes 64 bits - 12 years agoAmazing that there was a version of fcpx WITH tracks... and they took them out. Ugh. Somewhere in the dark caverns of Cupertino, there's a GOOD version of FCPX. But we'll never see it.by Flabasha - Avid Media Composer Re: Interesting thoughts on FCPX from a former AVID employee - 12 years agoI agree with Craig, the whole thing seems VERY odd. The Apple "Pro Apps" heads came by the studio on Thursday to "have a dialogue" and convince people that they "are listening". Which is strange, because the prevailing wisdom is that Apple just didn't care what the professional community thought. I wasn't in the meeting, but apparently the Pro Apps people seemedby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going? Remain with FCP or switch? - 12 years agoYeah, removing FCS3 was the height of hubris. And it continues to be. Can you imagine the difference in perception of FCPX if they'd continued to support FCS3? People would say, hey, it's not ready yet, but that's okay, we get it, it's in it's infancy. People would still gripe, but nothing close to the fury out there now.by Flabasha - Café LA Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going? Remain with FCP or switch? - 12 years agoYeah, a funny thing about this whole debacle is that it's really going to reinflate salaries for professional editors (and increase job security), because once again you'll have to use AVID to be taken seriously. (I think Premiere will gain some foothold, but there's too much industry cred for AVID to have Premiere taken seriously in LA yet. Which is not to say it's not better than AVID, just,by Flabasha - Café LA Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going? Remain with FCP or switch? - 12 years agoA few thoughts... How insane is a product when ALL the moderators on a forum DEVOTED to the software are not even considering using the new version? Epic Fail. In Apple's defense though, it sounds like Premiere is basically FCP7, so maybe Apple saw that and decided there was no reason to fight Adobe for the same customers. Speaking of which... if Adobe is smart, Premiere V6 should basicby Flabasha - Café LA Re: Positive MATCH EQ - 12 years agoWow. The audio manipulations in FCPX are INSANE (jump to the second half to see bezier audio graphing, etc.) Awesome. Makes the audio handling in FCP seem like a toy... Aaaagh! Why couldn't they have just added this stuff to FCP7 and not f--- the rest of it up...by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Positive - 12 years agoInteresting (and heartening) post about all the positive "pro" audio changes in FCPXby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Moving Forward - 12 years agoI asked this earlier, here's my current take. For the first time ever, I opened Premiere Pro and threw some HDSLR footage of my baby into it. I am heartened by how similar Premiere is to FCP 7, but better for h.264 footage because it doesn't have to render. On the downside, the interface feels more dated/slightly clumsier than FCP7... but most important of all, I realized that I own no plugiby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: WOW! Now CONAN O'BRIEN piles on FCPX! - 12 years agoYou'll see the correct video to the right. You won't thank me when you do see it.by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: WOW! Now CONAN O'BRIEN piles on FCPX! - 12 years agoOh, and if that isn't enough, watch this NOT IRONIC video about who FCPX is for... made by the guy (David Pogue) who is clearly in Apple's pocket. In other words, this is exactly what Steve Jobs/Randy Ubilos wanted to put out there (before the s--- hit the fan). I WARN YOU. You WILL want to vomit. It's like a nightmare...by Flabasha - Café LA - X WOW! Now CONAN O'BRIEN piles on FCPX! - 12 years agoThis has officially become a major, mainstream embarrassment to Apple... Granted, at this point, it's starting to become an excuse by non-editors to just bash Apple... but if it forces Steve Jobs' hand in fixing this situation, I'm for it.by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: "Background Rendering" - 12 years agoSo if you're doing ANYTHING in the application it stops rendering?! Are you serious? The word "background" means you can do something in the "foreground". If that's not the case, this "feature" is just an out-and-out lie. It's just "render when idle". That is literally NO better than what currently happens in FCP7. Is this true?!by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: OH . . . MY . . . GOD - 12 years agoApple just put out a statement. Via David Pogue of the New York Times. Well, they won't admit it's them talking, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out who it really is... So now David Pogue is like Deep Throat in the Watergate scandal? This all just gets more and more bizarre...by Flabasha - Café LA - X Fascinating: Is Apple responding through David Pogue? - 12 years agoMany of you are aware of David Pogue's New York Times piece endlessly praising Final Cut Pro X. And it seemed to make sense... for him, as he admitted he's "not an editor" and was just playing with the program. But now, Pogue has posted a huge list of "innacuracies" about complaints regarding the new FCP. Two things grab me... 1. It does clear up some falsehoodby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Randy U says... - 12 years agoI love how they're basically derogating these complaints as 'pros b-tching' Could you imagine a version of Microsoft Word that couldn't OPEN old Word files? Sorry, everything you've ever written simply won't open, and we're no longer selling the program that WILL open them. Oh, and you can't save different versions of your document, only ONE. And don't try sharing your document, it can onlyby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: OH . . . MY . . . GOD - 12 years agoAre you sure? Because Philip Hodgetts who is THE FCPX guru, and the only one saying FCPX is great, tweeted that this way of working will not fly in FCPX. In his words... "that paradigm is gone".by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: The Real Question... - 12 years agoOh, and more to your question... The reason to move now is one simple word: Rendering. I waste probably 30-35% of my time in FCP7 rendering. But as the admittedly crazy-awesome engine beneath FCPX shows, and Premiere's Mercury Engine show, there's no reason nowadays to be wasting such a huge amount of creative time waiting. Until we all move from 1080 to 4K, that isby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: The Real Question... - 12 years agoWell, I posted this in another thread. But this is my answer. (By the way, I'm an editor at one of the four big TV networks, whose entire trailer/tv spot dept. moved to FCP 2 years ago. I've also cut on FCP for movie trailer houses for many years, after initially learning on Avid...) Why am I leaving? The app is not written for me. The final straw for me was finding out you can't assembby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: OH . . . MY . . . GOD - 12 years agoYep. How's that New Coke taste? The final straw for me was finding out you can't assemble a palette of clips at the end of your timeline. It'll all "magnetically" snap into my sequence. This utterly destroys my whole way of working. This whole thing is fascinating from a business perspective, like the New Coke launch. Rarely, if ever, has the market leader in a business compleby Flabasha - Café LA - X The Real Question... - 12 years agoI think we can (almost) all agree that Final Cut is dead. Maybe in 5 years it'll be usable again, but what's the point? SO... the BIG question... Moving forward, which way do I go, Premiere or Avid? I know Avid, but an old Media Composer version, way before 5.5. I know NOTHING of Premiere, except the fact that the Mercury Engine is fantastic for realtime playback. But all in all, heby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: X is here (also new Motion and Compressor) - 12 years agoUnfortunately, I think the key here is to never again make your LIVING off Apple-branded programs. They've made the strategic decision to be a consumer company. For serious stuff, it's time to go back to Adobe, Avid, Discreet, etc... companies whose business model is purely for professionals. I'm kind of bummed, but this move really makes sense for Apple as a company. Can't fault 'em.by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Motion 5 pics - Apple Insider - 12 years agoIt does clearly show that all the processing ingest features like automatic color balance, etc. are disable-able options, in case anyone was doubtingby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Motion 5 pics - Apple Insider - 12 years agoMmmm... looks good! In FCP, I'm liking the advanced level of the display channels. VERY pro. Over my head, to be honest. That guy (EXCUSE me... girl!) needs to keep 'em coming! P.S. They're almost certainly legit, as they've been pulled from the Twitter page. Apple Lawyers move very quickly...by Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 13 years agoYes, it is prosumer pricing, but I think that's the way the whole industry is headed. Apple's taking it on the chin from editors for lowering their price into the reach of regular people (I can't believe I'm writing that), but everybody's doing it - look at DaVinci and Smoke. They used to be 200K+ with a proprietary hardware install. Now they're available on laptops for a thousand bucks. Boby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Let's play... Guess The UI Element! - 13 years agoWell, it looks like we finally have more than 4 choices for track height... in fact, it looks almost infinite! Progress!by Flabasha - Café LA Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 13 years agoI think we may be losing sight of reality in some ways... $300 is NOT consumer pricing. No casual consumer I know would spend more than $70-$80 on a piece of software, max. That has always been the consumer price point, since I was shoveling software for Electronics Boutique in my youth. I don't think the price point (which is similar to what it was as a quarter piece of the Studio) is aby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 13 years agoYeah, it's interesting, if Apple had played it safe, they probably would've finished Avid off (not that I'd like that). But by being bold, they've opened up a huge window of opportunity for Avid, a complete second chance at life. For Media Composer 6, Avid should just knock-off a few of the coolest features of Final Cut X, and they'll be king of the hill again, because they're not asking peopleby Flabasha - Café LA - X Re: Let's play... Guess The UI Element! - 13 years agoI'd bet the "2" is the drop-down for countdown leader, generators, etc., like FCP has under the current source window. The two text boxes, hmm. Intriguing... And how about the "speedometer" pulldown next to the "magic wand" (which I assume is quick n' dirty color correction)...by Flabasha - Café LA Re: Let's play... Guess The UI Element! - 13 years agoAlso looks like EQ drop down menus on the upper left corner of each audio clip. Cool!by Flabasha - Café LA |
