Re: Richard Townhill discusses latest update to X - 12 years agoI like the fact that I can fact that we can now by asigning Roles bring our sound tracks into Soundtrack Pro as a Multitrack project. This is a big help to me & allows me to be more patient with Apple compleating their work on FCPX.by Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: OPPORTUNITY - WHO THE PRO'S ARE!!!! - 12 years agoSome think being Apple Certified maks one a pro. Belt & suspenders.by Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: OPPORTUNITY - WHO THE PRO'S ARE!!!! - 12 years agoThe pros get on with the job of editing because they know they can do the job done with whatever equip. is available. Sure it makes the job easier to top of the line gear. However I don't think I became a better editor when I got to use upright moviolas & flatbed Steenbecks. I suspect I was better when I edited using a Moviescop, a pair of Moviola rewinds a tape splicer & a sync block.by Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: Moving Forward - 12 years agoI'm regarding this software as Final Cut Express 5 & am expecting by this time next year there will be a pro version. I think Apple can get the egg off its face by rebranding the software as Express 5. They can then state that they are re-releasing FCP 7 as the official Pro version & state that anyone who purchase Express 5 while it was labeled FCP X can if they wish get a full refund. Thby Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Is a decent manual forthcomming from Apple - 12 years agoThe online HTML docs are too painfully awkward to work with we need a proper pdf manual that we can load into Preview & annotate. I keep checking Apple Manuals & when you click on the FCP X icon the latest set of manuals that come up are FCP 7's.by Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: OT: An Editor's Lament - 12 years agoWOMAN AT BAR: So, what do you do? ME: Uh, I'm the guy who creates the emotional experience for the audience watching the film. WOMAN AT BAR: Oh so you're a film director. ME: Nah, I'm the guy who convinces the director that he needn't commit suicide after he's viewed the dailies & fears he'll never be able to work again. I convince him that there's gold nuggets buried in the pile ofby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 12 years agoI agree Andy, I will reserve my judgement on FCPX in my hands. I play around with the features in IMovie that will be in FCPX in my spare time. The kind of footage that Randy used for editing at the demo would be easy to edit with IMovie but it would be a bitch to try to cut drama footage with iMovie. When we get the new tool we will see its something we want to use. I edited most of my 16mmby Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: Spent the Evening with iMovie 11 - 12 years agoiMovie is not FCP. Certain aspects of the interface have been ported from iMovie & you can gain a leg up on gaining some experience with a lot of tools. However FCPX is not iMovie Pro. Initially I didn't think the magnetic timeline worked in iMovie, but it does exactly what was shown in the demo at the Supermeet. On the other hand the color corrector in iMove is ported from iPhoto whereas theby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 12 years agoMy feeling is that Apple wanted to reassure us that they really were doing some development on a new version of FCP. If another NAB came & went with just Steve Job's statement that it was going to be awesome, they would lose a substantial number of fop users to AVID and Adobe. Unfortunately they fumbled the opportunity. The other hour should have been spent with Q & A. They need to post aby Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 12 years agoNo reason you shouldn't be able to switch sequence even better than in FCP7. Have a look at how the current version of iMovie lets you radially switch between projects no reason why sequences should behave differently. Don't try to use iMovie as an editing software however, it will assume that it knows better than you do what you want to do. But for $15 you can get a preview of how some of functby Dave Hardy - Café LA - X Re: LAFCPUG - Don't fail me now! - 14 years agoAs Shane has pointed out, the important back up while editing is the project file. You need to make at least one duplicate copy of this file on separate media at least at the end of each editing session & preferably periodically during the day. USB flash memory drives are cheep. It's not worth the time money & effort trying to retrieve the files from a dead hard drive. Once again render in background. Some user customization of the look of the interface interface. Improved support for control surfaces.by Dave Hardy - FCP Feature Requests Re: FCP7 Share takes WAY too long to export RED camera footage. - 14 years agoOpen up a new sequence ProRes 422 8 bit. No need to go 10 bit or ProRes HQ for this footage as the original is 8 bit & you're not bringing in fancy graphics. Copy your present sequence into the new 422 sequence. It will need a render, but the Share function should not take very long to do after the render in the ProRes 422 sequence. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: NEW FCP SOFTWARE - 14 years agoYou should be fine with 4G of 1066 DDR3 ram in the iMac. DDR3 ram at the moment is fairly expensive & ram is always far more expensive at an apple dealer especially apple themselves. Unless you have so much money that you don't know what to do with it, buy these items where you get the best price. Installing RAM in an iMac is easier than tying your shoelaces, so don't make the mistake of payiby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: OT what happened to the "download video" function on all Youtube videos? - 14 years agoIf the movie doesn't have a means for downloading, go to the Safari menu & select Window/Activity. In the Activity window double click on the largest file (it's usually MB's) The movie will download either as an mp4 or an flv file. You can then double click on the flv file & MpegStreamclip will open up & you can convert it to a H264 file or whatever else you like. All the best.by Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio (2009): Frakking Documentation... - 14 years agoThis along with the corrupt sound loops in Soundtrack Pro are the 2 most distressing aspects I discovered about the upgrade so far. I did the install last night & these were among the 1st things I checked. Went to bed rather dejected. It did my heart good to see that I am not alone in detesting this horrible documentation which requires far too much time to read than is practical. With the Pby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Tascam FW-1082 with FCS2? - 14 years agoYes it has to be set to Control for both Input & Output. Having the Cubase drivers selected just give you control of all the pan pots. Otherwise it functions the same as the Mackie emulation. Using Mackie emulation you only have control of the pan for channels 1 & 2. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Tascam FW-1082 with FCS2? - 14 years agoYou install the Cubase LE software that comes with the Tascam FW-1082. Actually the version of Cubase LE that ships with the 1082 does not work with Tiger or Leopard as Tascam states plainly on their site. You can get a replacement disk from Tascam that works by phoning or sending them an email. You will be asked to provide proof of purchase of the FW-1082. of course the full Cubace program willby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Contour Shuttle Pro - 14 years agoStrange I've had both Shuttle Pro 1 & the newer Shuttle Pro 2. Never had any lag on either. I haven't discovered any advantages to the new update. I think updates from Contour are rather useless. All they seem to do is add a set of very basic commands to the buttons for various programs, which any end user can come up with a more useful set of commands in any case. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Audio mixing on the fly - 15 years agoI use the 1082 with FCP STP & Motion. Make sure you install the Cubase LE software to be able to control the pan pots on all tracks from the control surface. Use the Cubase drivers, not the sugessted Mackie drivers. If it had happened while walking on the street it would have possibly given more warning that something was wrong. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Scary Audio instruction - 15 years agoIt's Cmd+F5. Definitely scary! Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: AVCCAM easy set up settings - 15 years agoUntil the next major upgrade FCS 3 you have the option of transcoding to either DVC Pro HD or Apple Pro Res 422. Which option you opt for will depend on whether you are using a Raid or not. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: Lookout Soundtrack Pro, Songsmith is here! - 15 years agoWrong forum. Soundtrack Pro is a tool for film & video editors to build a dialogue effects & to some extent music mix for their productions, not a tool for singers to put together a scratch music backing track. This tool might have appeal to Garageband users however. Daveby Dave Hardy - Soundtrack Pro Could be related to next FCS - 15 years agoApple patent for script based storyboards. Daveby Dave Hardy - Café LA Re: iMovie vs. Final Cut Express vs. Final Cut Pro - 15 years agoThe Mac & FCP have been my editing machine of choice for the past 9 years. I've bought every upgrade since 1.2 as soon as it became available. I also bought FCE when it first came out to see who this version might be suitable for. Likewise I bought a final cut keyboard long after I knew many times more shortcuts that the than the keyboard revealed.
