Re: transcoding XF-AVC to ProRes - 8 years agoEditReady by divergentmedia.com will deal with this footage. As will Resolve Lite. Compressor won't know what to do with these files.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: recommend places that transfer Mini DV tapes to FCP? - 9 years agoIn Los Angeles? Clonetown, on the Cahuenga Pass.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Compressor 4 and FCP 6? - 9 years agoWell...you can't SEND TO with that version. But you can export a QT reference file, or self contained file, and bring that into Compressor. Is FCP 6 working fully? That OS doesn't support it....by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Need to provide client with an FCP file small enough to email' - 9 years agoEMAIL?!? at 1440x1080? Many email programs have an attachement file size limit of 10MB...some 20MB. That won't get you very much time, at that size. Might be able to do :30 or 1:00by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: What format to use? - 9 years agoFCP doesn't work with MP4 on the timeline...nor M4V. Meaning it might SEEM like it's working...you can edit and stuff. But when it comes time to export...you either lose sync or get crappy results. You have MANY strikes against you. First off, MP4 in the timeline...converted from M4V...which was converted from who knows what. Then you used an HDV sequence setting...that's a Long GOP format reby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Canon C300 ingest lesson - 9 years agoHeresy I say! And that's EXACTLY what you do. This is what you did with P2, that also had a CONTENTS folder. This is what you do with ALL tapeless media. Make a folder and give it a unique REEL name, and then drop the full card contents into that. Never rename anything...let the camera guy know that. Make unique folder names, and then archive the full card into those new folders. That's just aby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: .m4v files, best workflow - 9 years ago1. Yes...gotta convert. ProRes 422 or ProRes LT are your best options. 2. Why not do the whole edit in Premiere if you have it? No converting necessary. 3. See #2.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Upgrading SL to ML , Mavericks or Yosemite - 9 years agoHackintosh's need to run special hacked MacOS installs. Well, most of them. Some of them can get by with the main installs. BUT, you need to keep them with the supported OS, otherwise the computer won't even boot. This is the drawback to having a cheaper Hackintosh...by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: 2.5inch Raids & 4k - 9 years agoWhat is a "7K" 2.5" 4 Bay RAID solution? What's the 7K? 2.5" eSATA RAID? In today's market? Good luck. eSATA is long in the tooth....and 2.5" Raid 5 solutions are newer. Here's a Thunderbolt option: Plenty of eSATA RAID options for full sized drives, but laptop sized? Not that I know of. I don't even think there are FW800 versions of those.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Lots of photographs - looking for a good approach - 9 years agoI use Quicklook. Click on a still, press the space bar, they are viewable pretty large. UP and DOWN arrow between the shotsby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: What is the last version of MAC oS X which works with FCP7? - 9 years agoLAST SUPPORTED version...10.6.8. Although it works just fine on 10.7 but starting on 10.8 to 10.10 you are getting into murky waters as those OS versions were written without support for FCP 7 taken into consideration. The later the OS version, the less reliable FCP 7 will become. 10.6 to 10.8 all installed QT7 as part of the OS. 10.9 and 10.0 only install QTX player..and that is a very strippby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: What is the best package for the money on an MC bundle - 9 years agoThere really is no Avid bundle. Previous versions had add ons like Script Sync or Phrase Find, but those don't work with later versions due to contract negotiations. Avid used to be bundled with Avid DVD software (PC ONLY), Sorenson Squeeze, a couple audio apps...and phrasefind and script sync. But that was when it cost $5000. To lower the price, they did away with the bundle, so now it's onlyby Shane Ross - Avid Media Composer Re: It's that time again. Reviving this topic started in 2008 - 9 years agoThe point of that topic has been driven into the ground. Not much new to say on it. Some tech changes, some does not. That's the "."by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Registering Editing Work - 9 years agoSorry...there's no way to do that. As for your situation...it wouldn't come into play if it was a thing. Because you were hired to do a task...edit a film. You did that. And then you handed your cut to the producer director...and they are making their small changes, and if they cut it themselves...the get and deserve co-editing credit. Hopefully they list themselves AFTER you, as you did the bulkby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Importing Media - 9 years agoFCP doesn't work with MP4 files. You need to convert the file to ProRes 422. If Compressor won't do it...MPEG STREAMCLIP will. It's free.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Bringing in jpeg, looks blurry - 9 years agoWhat are your sequence settings? If your sequence is DV, no matter what the DPI is, the photo will not look all that sharp. Once rendered, it's now 72DPI and DV.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: FCP 7 on a PPC 11.2 (2.3 Ghz) 10.5.8 ? - 10 years agoIf I were you, I'd avoid the REALLY old hardware. PowerPC is so old...so under powered...just isn't worth it. Really only good if you are working with DV (standard def), HDV or DVCPRO HD. ProRes and PowerPC don't really mix. First off, you can't log and transfer anything to ProRes...FCP simply won't do it. And converting with an outside app will take FOREVER. Trust me...forever. At least gby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: EX-3 footage in FCP 7. - 10 years ago1) VBR...Variable Bit Rate. 2) XDCAM only comes in one way...as XDCAM. L&T simply re-wraps them as QT. So there's nothing really to change. Some formats allow you to convert to ProRes upon import...XDCAM does not. Like DVCPRO HD...it only comes in one way.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Avid MC 6.0.5 Problem with generating duplicate frames - 10 years agoHow are you exporting...just EXPORT TO QT? Are you changing the frame rate at all?by Shane Ross - Avid Media Composer Re: another 'get FCP onto a new Mac' question... - 10 years agoYou install the last version...FCP 7. If it's an upgrade disk, it'll ask for the original SN for the first full version you bought...and then ask for the SN for FCP 7. Migrating never works...too many files are installed throughout the system. Always install from the original install DVDs.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Logging P2 Footage without FCP? - 10 years agoYes. Get an app called EDIT READY by divergentmedia.com. Drop the entire CONTENTS folder into the drop zone, and all the clips will pop up. If you shot DVCPRO HD...select PASSTHROUGH. If you shot AVCIntra...choose ProRes 422. flag all the footage you want converted, and then convert all flagged...or convert all. GREAT app.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: down converting 2k file to work in FCP 5 Pre-Intel - 10 years agoI find it odd that you say that....because I've shot and cut many projects 720p 23.98. Some shot on DVCPRO HD tape, and pulldown was removed. And a lot shot on P2 at 720p 24pN...that shoots 23.98. And there are sequence settings for 23.98...so...by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: down converting 2k file to work in FCP 5 Pre-Intel - 10 years agoNot if you want to match back to the masters. Apple Intermediate doesn't have timecode...it won't bring over the source timecode. DVCPRO HD is what you want to use. And you really need to think about updating...your system is very limited, and over a decade old.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: down converting 2k file to work in FCP 5 Pre-Intel - 10 years agoHave someone else do it for you on a newer computer. If that is the only computer you have, you are stuck with the long conversion time.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: How do uninstall FCP 6.06 to install FCP 7? What are the steps? - 10 years agoFCP 7 gave you more ProRes codecs, and some more under the hood stability such as compatibility with later model cameras, but not much else. I concur, stick with FCP 6 and finish with FCP 6. Don't go to FCX for a "film finish." FCX is not designed with that in mind at all. FCX is for web and other tapeless finishing options, and doesn't even GO to "film out."
