4:3 to 16:9 sequence setting? - 12 years agoI've got an old 4:3 Standard Definition project and I'm unclear what sequence settings would be best for taking it to 16:9, with FCP7? Should I just click the "Anamorphic 16:9" box in Sequence settings and then either let it autoscale or do my stretching/zooming/panning/distorting/crying or is there a better choice? I know of Andy's Elastic Aspect, and Smart Anamorphic (I think thby wordsworth - Café LA Re: How long does it take to cut a feature? - 12 years agoIt depends entirely on the project, genre, format, and variables involved in that. Are you syncing, double system? Will there be assistants? It also depends on you as an editor. Do you like to make long rough cuts, and then cut down from there? If it's your first feature, and I'm guessing it is, if you need a time estimate - then finding out the length of time it takes for a top notch eby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 12 years agoA tape input workflow is a must. Too many projects outlast tape formats, and updates. It's not uncommon in documentaries to work with every antiquated format under the sun and take 10 years to complete. Sure, once FCP 7 loses compatibility, there will be secondary software for archiving off tape, but this is counterproductive to Apple's current methodology of incorporating those secondaryby wordsworth - Café LA - X Re: Final Cut Pro X - still Pro - 12 years agoI do remember when FCP first came out, wishing it had some of the clutter free thinking of Imovie, and wondering if I could offline on Imovie in combination. It seemed silly that Apple made that transition difficult with incompatible formats between the two. Seeing them finally incorporate some of those ideas into the pro software seems long overdue, but there are many styles of cutting that requby wordsworth - Café LA - X Re: Multiclip fine cutting? - 12 years ago"I hope if you're nesting that you're not doing that "traditional edit" on the nest containers themselves? " That is unfortunately what I'm doing. Better workflow suggestions, much appreciated though! CPU wise, everything is cool ... but it doesn't feel stable in terms of avoiding the creation of brand new sync issues, every time I do anything. The rough cut is so inby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Multiclip fine cutting? - 12 years agoEssentially, we tried to do multiclip editing....there was some slippage issues we didn't catch, and some camera breaks. We have a rough cut that falls out of sync in places...then back in sync. The offset isn't predictable.by wordsworth - Café LA Multiclip fine cutting? - 12 years agoHi, I'm wondering what the best method is for fixing, and fine cutting a long messy multiclip project with sync issues galore? My initial approach was to nest the multiclip in a timeline with each camera angle placed on it's own track. That worked pretty good, and brought me back into traditional editing, but I'm nervous cutting/adding dissolves into the problematic multiclip track when correcby wordsworth - Café LA QT files = "Exec" files - 14 years agoAnyone know the scoop on Exec files? I know I can rename them as .mov files again, but I'm concerned some compression or quality hits may have occurred. I'm seeing more jaggies on footage then I remember. Am I just paranoid? The media in question had gone through a data recovery process. It's a large amount of media, so I doubt they were all corrupted files. At least not originally.by wordsworth - Café LA Re: Sequence setting for upscaling - 14 years agoOkay, I'm certainly confused but I think part of it is I'm not explaining myself right. What I would like to do is end up with a 16 x9 frame size - 1280x720 or 1920x1080. I figured I could shrink my Standard DV 4:3 image to 70-80% to get the side by side picture, with the picture in picture. If I were to do a picture in picture with 2 boxes in a 720x480 screen, I would have to shrink itby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Sequence setting for upscaling - 14 years agoI'd like a 16:9 shaped frame for my final product though.by wordsworth - Café LA Sequence setting for upscaling - 14 years agoHi, I'm wondering what would be the best 16:9 frame size for SD 4:3 clips using a picture in picture effect. I'm technically not upscaling, or uprezing the format, at all.... just a little resizing the 4:3 to use the 16:9 real estate. I'll be outputting for dvd, and also web streaming on Vimeo, etc. Does it matter which frame size I pick? It looks like whatever I do, it will involve lotsby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Effects for removing blemishes and pimples on actors? - 15 years agoYou can over expose the image slightly, or apply a silk, or beauty filter effect that will soften the image. Most of the plugins out for this use are designed to soften up lines on the face, not blemishes, and all they're really doing is some targeted color correction. Depending on your use, you can also try a more extreme film look that may blow out the details, but it would need to work for theby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Reconnect = wrong clips - 15 years agoWill try that test before exporting.... there's a lot of other strangeness going on, even with stills, where it's switching up stills, showing me another still filtered with the color pink....I double click on it and the correct image shows up in the viewer anyway. Then it was leaving lines on the timeline wherever I hit playback...but that stopped. Any easy remedies here aside from trashinby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Reconnect = wrong clips - 15 years agoThis is the latest update (6.0.5 I think?), and I'm cutting DV format. Luckily I did find an old project file that's still linking to the right clips, so I'll try dragging them into my screwy sequence as a fix.by wordsworth - Café LA Reconnect = wrong clips - 15 years agoI have clips playing back with wrong in/out points. Only thing I can think of is I recently had to copy over a large amount of media, and do a messy Reconnect after a hard drive failure....and now some of my clips aren't matching up....oddly enough it's with media which was never moved, on drives I haven't altered (same directory, name, etc.). instead. If I open old project files (both inby wordsworth - Café LA QT 7.5.5. resolution weirdness? - 15 years agoAnyone else experiencing a loss of resolution and all around darker image on footage since updating to QT 7.5.5 ? I've got straight DV, NTSC which was transfered several versions back, but I'm just noticing some degradation now. If I'm not imagining it, there's something going on I need to fix. Transferring all my footage into the new QT is not an option for this project.by wordsworth - Café LA Re: CGM Text ... crappy? - 15 years agoThanks. I've tried a many different fonts (Helvetica, Lucinda) and messed a bit with the controls. I may not be following what you mean by moving it a pixel or 2 though? Do you mean size? The plugin itself is proving super useful to me formatting wise. I'm just creating a simple black box backdrop sized to the title, so it's nice to let this size it automatically depending on the lengthby wordsworth - Café LA CGM Text ... crappy? - 15 years agoI was trying to us the CGM DVE Text plugin to do my lower 3rds, and everything's coming out blurry and after rendering they inherit a drastic flicker. Changing the font, or size doesn't help. Is it just the limitations of an outdated plugin?by wordsworth - Café LA Re: USB editing ...still a no-no? - 15 years agoOh wow, both those options were ones I wasn't aware of. Thanks Wayne, and Joe. (oh wait, that's because they're not options for a macbook. no pci slot. using a macbook, not a macbook pro)by wordsworth - Café LA Re: USB editing ...still a no-no? - 15 years agoI wish, but I'm cutting on a Macbook for the time being.by wordsworth - Café LA USB editing ...still a no-no? - 15 years agoIs USB2 still a no-no even for just editing standard DV? I've always used FW Oxford chipsets, but the cheap cases are drying up, and my mac doesn't have SATA or even eSata capabilities so I wouldn't mind being able to use USB2 cases to juggle material. I get the sense that it's workable for editing/archiving DV, but not direct capture, and I'm wondering if that matches the experiences withby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Exporting QT looks crummy - 15 years agoOkay back on track! Thanks so much for the help. I'll actually make my deadline thanks to you guys! Not entirely sure what was going on but I trashed preferences using FCP Rescue, and also took Derek's suggestion and found that Use High Quality box was unchecked in Quicktime preferences. The stand alone .mov file looks clean again. Hopefully everything will go smoothly into DVDland now .by wordsworth - Café LA Re: Exporting QT looks crummy - 15 years agoYup, regular export, settings at current, and recompress is unchecked. I'm absolutely puzzled. The 8-bit uncompressed file ran out of disc space on a drive with 60gigs open. That doesn't sound right either.by wordsworth - Café LA Exporting QT looks crummy - 15 years agoI'm exporting a self contained QT file to make a dvd in either DVDStudio or Toast and while that system has always worked great for me, it's suddenly looking crummy. The degraded picture is visible in my .mov file so it's obviously my export settings. The results are heavy artifacting, noisy and brighter picture which is washed out in places, and ghosting on the titles. The curious thing is,by wordsworth - Café LA QT for mix - 15 years agoWhat's the easiest way to create a low res version of my 30gb full quality QT file, and what would be the best settings to convert the file for a Protools sound mix? H.264? Mpeg4? I've been trying to do it in MpegStreamclip.by wordsworth - Café LA Re: OMF workflow question - 16 years agoThanks for the feedback. I'm not shocked to hear the warnings, and it's nothing I would have considered before FCP, but it was actually my audio teams idea to start work now. My only expectation is for a scratch mix. I know they I value the audio aspect of post too much to try and do it in a rush, and would love to accommodate their request so they can start cleaning up audio. I wasby wordsworth - Café LA OMF workflow question - 16 years agoI know in a perfect world there should be a picture lock before mixing audio but I'm wondering what strategies I can use (or problems I can expect) in handing off an OMF film do my audio team can start mixing, before I've finished fine cutting the project? Is there a safe workflow to go back and forth and have all the time code conform? I know Soundtrack listed this as a feature, right? I woulby wordsworth - Café LA Re: Upgrading project file error - 16 years agoOh that worked, thank you! All I had to do was add the .fcp suffix. My brain isn't working so well! Thanks for the help. I have everything else I need on my firewire, so I'm all set now.by wordsworth - Café LA Upgrading project file error - 16 years agoI emailed myself a project file so I could edit while on holiday, but I'm unable to open it now. Once I download it off Gmail, it shows up as a Quicktime file, or Text file instead. Opening these in FCP, gives the File Error: wrong type message. To add to the fun, the project file was created in 4.5 under Tiger, and I'm hoping to upgrade the file to 6.0 under Leopard. Is there anyway Iby wordsworth - Café LA Re: imac 20" 2400XT limitations? - 16 years agoThanks again. I'm still really having a difficult time with this 2400XT vs 2600XT choice....by wordsworth - Café LA |
