Re: Performance Issue? - 12 years agoi also tried it on the original single partition, but there is no difference. What I don't unnderstand is why the CPU is only running at half throttle and so little memory is utilised. The media is on a separate internal raid, so no issues there. In practical terms FCPX appears to have a time disadvantage when it come to rendering, not what is expected. I would be interested if others could cby Geoff Addis - Café LA - X Performance Issue? - 12 years agoCan this be true? I have just compared the relative performance of FCPX and FCP7 when rendering a vignette filter applied to a clip from an EX1r. Tests were made using both native XDCAM and ProRes codecs. The FCP7 results are in parenthesis: Time taken - 1'40" (37 seconds), CPU utilisation - 53% (37%), Memory utilisation - 1.2GB (612MB) The above results are for the native XDCAby Geoff Addis - Café LA - X Re: FX based transitions and effects - 13 years agoNothing wrong with the drives - using internal SATA RAID zero and can run 4 layers in real time. No other FXs used, simply either a single fx plug transition or fx. Cheers, Geoffby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: FX based transitions and effects - 13 years agoHi Guys, Thanks for the quick responses - faster than FCP! To answer the points raised: 1) The EX1 footage is ingested via Log and Transfer, then placed on an HDCAM EX timeline with Rendering set to ProRes - all parameters are matched to the original camera capture settings. I have also converted all clips to ProRes before placing them on a matching ProRes timeline, but with the same end rby Geoff Addis - Café LA FX based transitions and effects - 13 years agoI have just downloaded a trial copy of the FXFactory plugins and as a consequence I've been looking at the performance of these and similar fx based transitions/effects in FCP. I was under the impression that the fx (GPU accelerated) transitions and effects are more efficient than others within FCP, but I find that I have to render every single fx transition/effect before being able to preview itby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: New MacPro? - 14 years agoHi Andy, Your understanding of my problem is correct! I am presently running two internal SATA drives in RAID 0. I have also tried 3 drives in RAID 0, but didn't perceive any great improvement; the current read data rate is 120MB/s, so this should not be the cause of the problem. I have also converted the XDCAM EX footage to ProRes before placing them on the timeline, but again I didn'tby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: New MacPro? - 14 years agoMy thanks for all answers so far. My main criticsm is that in order to get a high quality impression of what many effects or transitions will be like it is necessary to render them and this can take quite some time. In some instances it is possible to play the effect at full frame rate, but using the medium quality setting and this results in a poor display. Although I have never had need toby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: New MacPro? - 14 years agoThanks guys. I didn't know at the time that there the two lower end GPU cards were in the machine otherwise I would have asked for the higher end one to be tried, you have confirmed my suspicion. I was also told the a new ProAps software revision, due in the near future, will enable all cores to be utilised in FCP, have you heard anything along these line. If correct, then this may have quiby Geoff Addis - Café LA New MacPro? - 14 years agoFor some time I have been critical of the frequent need to render transitions or FX in the timeline in order to get a decent quality preview. In my case I am using EX1 footage ingested using Log and Transfer and placed on a Prores time line. Even a gaussian blur or soft focus filter requires rendering in order to see it at full frame rate, high quality; however it will play at full frame rate, mby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: Thank you for the nice 6.5 upgrade - 14 years agoI agree that rendering is not FCP's greatest strength. Using the same 1920 x 1089 50i footage from an EX1 on FCP and Edius timelines, and using the same MacPro I get much better real time preview and rendering from Edius. Typical example: 29 minute program with only a 'Y Curve' filter applied (Natress filter in the case of FCP and Edius' own in the case of Edius) resulted in the following renby Geoff Addis - Café LA FCP on new MacPro 2.93GHz Quad Core - 14 years agoHas anyone used this with FCP? I'm just interested to learn what any improvement in rendering and real time performance will be compared to my 2007 Dual 2.66G MacPro. Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance, Geoffby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: Capture cards, pro res 422 and HDV compression questions - 16 years agoUsing Black Magic Intensity Pro here to convert HDV to proRes on capture. Input to Intensity Pro may be either HDMI or component. The card also provides HDMI and component output from timeline. Good value for money, about £230 here inthe UK. Geoffby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: M/s decoder plugin for FCP? - 16 years agoI'm new to FCP and STP so I cannot be sure if this is possible, but this method will work using a hardware or suitable software mixer: 1) Assign the M channel to one input channel of you mixer and pan to center. 2) Assign the S channel to two channelso of the mixer, pan one to the Left and one to the right - if possible gang the two channels faders together 3) Reverse the phase on one of theby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: Best program for manipulating stills outside of FCP? - 16 years agoImaginnate from Canopus/Grass Valley is very good for this type of work.by Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: got my FCS2 upgrade box today - 16 years agoMine arrived this morning, as promissed, direct from Apple. As a newcomer to the MAC, can someone advise me if it is necessary to remove FCP5.1 from the computer before installing the latesr version or does the u/g simply overwrite the existing installation? Geoffby Geoff Addis - Café LA Re: FCS2 Full ships 3-5 days while FCS2 UG ships 2-3 weeks??? - 16 years agoApple advised me today, 17th May, that my U/G should arrive tomorrow - perhaps things are faster in the UK!
