Yes, you can. 23.98 sequences can be outputted via FW with a standard 3:2 pulldown. Check your playback prefs for the pulldown pattern. When you turn on your external video, FCP will add the pulldown on the way out thru your FW. I don't know if this pulldown is added for print to video or edit to tape, but I would imagine so. check the manual for that. Otherwise, you can crash it out on plaby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Select the edit point in V1 first, then the up/down arrows will only stay within that track. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Do you have an HDTV? If so, then get them to buy Blackmagic HDMI card with HDMI output. It costs $300. Then you can look at the footage on at least a HDTV. If they're serious about their film, $300 is a no brainer. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Boris Titles sluggish in this version? - 16 years ago
Is it just me or do you guys find this version of Boris 3D and Title Crawl really sluggish? I get the beach ball for about 1/2 second on very long scrolls inside the Boris UI just by making simple carriage returns and deleting extra spaces. I also get the beach ball once shadows and outlines are turned on as well. I think I'm finally at the point where I think FCP should have a robust tby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Indeed $495 upgrade price is a steal! And $295 student discount is probably the smartest thing they've done in a long while. I'll upgrade my copy of Xpro as well. Like Shane said, the hardware side is another issue and I don't see that changing. That's where they make the serious money. I agree with Tom. You've always had to render in the past to make the bars go away. You can do a crash edit and on a fast machine, it'll prob look fine. But you'll always have the render bars when the formats don't match ie 16x9 inside 4x3 sequence. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA
Working with upside down footage! - 16 years ago
So here's an interesting finding. I'm cutting a short film where they used a film adapter on the HVX and the result is that all the source footage is upside down. I lay all the clips in a sequence and applied the flop filter to every clip and then drag the clips back into the browser. Doesn't seem to be an issue. Although as I found out, viewing as Icons - the clips are back to upside down.by Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Tom and others, Basically what Marcus what is JKL Dynamic trimming in the timeline (not only in trim window) like the Avid. Select the proper tracks, decide on single or double rollers, then J or L to the right frame then hit K to make the trim. You can do it on the Avid and it's damn handy. Use it on the Avid everyday. That's a great deal. If you're doing mostly editorial work, it'll work just fine! The only issue that I can see is if you're pushing uncompressed HD around. But there's even a Kona3 for PCI-X slots. Are you REALLY going to use Color in a real world situation? Are you REALLY going to use Motion in a real world client situation? Macsales.com has a similar device from Newertech that does the samething. It's a little bit more money - $30 but Macsales caters to mac users directly so I always feel safe buying these quirky gadgets from them. Their customer service is also great! Just an alternative.... Closed Caption is a file that is different than a sub-title track. To be able to see captioning, you need a DVD player with closed captioning feature as well as a tv with that feature. I authored a DVD for the government that required CC and to my surprise there are many DVD players out there that does not support CC. I too am almost sure that you can use Log & Transfer from a HVX directly and transfer from the camera like a drive and should be able to pull the 24pN footage as native. Is this just wishful thinking? CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA
Close Captioning in HD - 16 years ago
Hey Folks, Anyone had any experience with CC with HD? I have a friend who needs to repackage promos and shows with existing CC on the HD sources/masters. I believe Color requires the resolution of the 17" MBP. People were asking about hooking up a second monitor with enough screen res to support Color but I don't recall if anyone confirmed whether that worked or not...? CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

This is a NEW procedure so you'd want to test it throughly before you proceed. Anything with ProRes is new and requires testing. However if you're going to color correct this feature, which I presume you will. Almost every show will have some tweaking to be done, so you'll end up rendering every shot in Pro Res even if you edit in native HDV. I would transcode to ProRes or DVCPro HD before I edit. I would never edit in HDV natively if I can find a way. A couple TB for a feature is not a big deal in my mind - par for the course. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

SATA Raid may be overkill. Here is the bandwidth: DVCPRO HD for 720p24 8 bit 4:2:2- 1280x720 (really 960x720 stretched) - 5.4 MB/sec Looks any firewire drive should be able to handle that. I wouldn't screen straight from FCP. I would make a QT movie at native res and screen from QT player since all your layers and effects would now be one stream in QT player vs. multiple streams of viby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Yes, Motion uses the video card to do the heavy lifting. Get a card with at least 256meg of VRam. I've been an ATI card user myself. I have a pulled ATI Radeon 9800 PCI-X card with 256 VRam that came with my G5. I've since upgraded to an X800 card. Depending on the percentage of speed changes, it may cause you to render. I've found percentage over 300% needs to be rendered on my machine (dual 2 G5). I would use the multicam feature to rough out an assembly first and then go back and fine cut with effects and trimming. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA

Is this a system drive or a media drive? If media, just copy all the files that are left on it to a temp location and reformat the drive and then copy the files back from the temp location. If it's a system drive, clone the drive via SuperDuper to a temp drive and reformat and then clone back. The best thing you can do for a drive is to reformat it to give it a clean slate. A lot of DVD replicators ask for DLTs. They don't like to replicate from DVD-R due to the potential errors that a DVD-R may present. However, most replicators will accept DVD-R these days but they prefer DLT. CHLby Chi-Ho Lee - Café LA
