Re: Storage -- need something big for a documentary. Suggestions? - 11 years agoI have the Caldigit HDOne...8TB. But Raid 5 so effectively 6TB. You'd need 2TB drives in there (8 of them) for 16TB...effective 14TB. There's also the MaxxDigital Raids.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: FREELANCING & BIDDING ON WORK @ $20??! - 11 years agoI'm from America...born in Montana, grew up throughout the west. I prefer to be called "Shane." Calling people by their last names is a very...jock thing to do. Only really done in sports, where you might have 15 David's or Michael's, and last names are on the uniform. Ross is my family name...my personal name is Shane. If I am called by my last name, I prefer having a "Mr.&qby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: What encoding software are folks using for broadcast delivery? - 11 years agoTelestream Episode is recommended for outlets that want things encodes exactly as they broadcast them. I rarely get asked for that, I'm either asked for a tape (HDCAM, HDCAM SR) or a ProRes or DNxHD Qt that they then encode to their needs on their end. But I know a lot of people who deliver broadcast MPEG for clients, and they use Episode.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Excessive Changes. How would you charge? - 11 years agoI bill hourly. I give estimates for the projects based on that, but then when they come back with notes, and notes, and changes...each of those add up. And I let the client know an estimate of time it will take to finish those notes, and give an estimated cost. Knowing that they have to pay for all the time needed to address their notes will curb this behavior. At least it will make sure they eby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Agree or Disagree: Cutting w/ Media Composer will provide more jobs and higher pay? - 11 years ago"How is the job market going for editors not cutting w/ Media Composer?" If you want to cut broadcast TV or commercials, possibly features (but that's a VERY hard nut to crack), you need to learn Avid Media Composer. Adobe Premiere is still in the lower rank jobs at the moment...but it might soon take over in places that are still holding out with FCP 7. So if you know FCP...you caby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Converting 23.98 times to 29.97i - 11 years agoHee...righto! This workflow is not needed on the Avid, as it has the option to show you both the NDF timing, and the DF timing. Built in. LOVE that. It also mixes 23.98 and 29.97 and 59.94 very well. It does a lot more than FCP 7 can...for sure.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: migration from FCP7 to AVID Media Composer - 11 years agoI second that...by Shane Ross - Avid Media Composer Re: No video on monitor - 11 years agoMake sure you have a DV/NTSC Easy Setup chosen...by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Converting 23.98 times to 29.97i - 11 years agoEither use a timecode calculator...or here's my trick The Timecode Calculator I have on my iPhone shows that 28:30 NDF equals 28:31:22 in DF timecode. So if you want your show to time out to 28:30;00 DF...your NDF timing needs to be 28:28:06 NDF Test this with my SLUG method.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Wacked audio - drifting and cut off, any advice? - 12 years agoWhen you have an audio glitch like that...audio cutting out or going off sync...you need to go into the L&T preferences, uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN, and re-import the footage.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Import avchd without transcoding - 12 years agoIt won't play back smoothly...I've tried it. It barely plays back smoothly in Quicktime. And this is with a 2012 MacBook Pro. Dunno why Panasonic even made this. It's useless. Even re-wrapping the AVCHD into a QT wrapper and going native...FCP dislikes that. Gotta transcode. Even FCX requests "hey, you want to optimize your media?" Meaning...make it easier to edit. The bonus with tby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: try to convert MXF files to .mov for use in FCP 7 - 12 years agoDid you try LOG AND TRANSFER? MXF files can be from a Panasonic P2 camera, or Canon XF or C300 camera. You REALLY need to know what camera these were shot with if you want to import them.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: MXF to Apple ProRes 422 - 12 years agoMXF...from? P2 Camera? Canon XF or C300 camera? XDCAM? Avid media? Depending on where it comes from, we can give you the appropriate workflow for dealing with it. (BTW, Calibrated MXF software allows your computer to see the MXF files natively, and then convert via Compressor or QT Pro to the format you need.)by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Editing sizzle reel with various formats and aspet ratios as source material. What is the best format to use in FCP7? What are the best compressor settings? How do I handle the work flow? - 12 years agoWhen it comes to THAT many formats, I opt to use Adobe Premiere Pro. It works with them natively. Depending on the time too. I mean, if you are going to use FCP, you need to convert all of those formats to editable ones in FCP...preferrably all the same codec. And bumping SD to HD...you need to enable frame controls, turn things to BEST, and go see a movie, or a few...or wait a full day as itby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: SLIMMING EFFECTS ??? - 12 years agoThey do this all the time in music videos...make the talent (typically females) a little thinner. But you know what they do it with? A Flame. not fire...but the hugely expensive compositing and effects system. And it takes a talented artist days to do this. There is no easy Slim Fast button.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: SDXC Cards and older MACs - 12 years agoThe computers won't even mount the cards? Or they can't see the format it records?by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Sony HDV and Snow Leopard...HELP! - 12 years agoI captured HDV from that EXACT deck using Snow Leopard just fine. Connected via Firewire? Have HDV Easy Setup chosen in FCP?by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Recommendations for capturing HDV thru component - 12 years agoOh...well, there's good news and bad news about your model of MacBook Pro. Good news, your machine has Express34. All 17" models do. Bad news is that the processor is too slow to capture 1080i HDV as ProRes. The machine needs to do the encoding, and that encoding requires fast processors. Your laptop, like mine (that is a 2008) is too slow. Only newer i5 and i7 processors are fast enougby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Recommendations for capturing HDV thru component - 12 years agoDoes said MacBook Pro have an Express34 slot? If so, the Matrox MXO2 Mini. Does it have Thunderbolt? Then the Mini with thunderbolt adapter. THere's also the Decklink Intensity with Thunderbolt. If you lack Express34 or Thunderbolt...then you are outta luck.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Output to DVCProHD - 13 years agoOH, there is no way to do insert edits of any kind with this deck. Even over Rs422. This is really a player deck only. YOu can record to it, but not in any sort of mastering way...can't have program start at 1:00:00:00 and all that. Nope, you need the 1400 for that.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Output to DVCProHD - 13 years agoYOu can only PRINT TO VIDEO with that deck...or crash record. That deck doesn't do Edit to Tape. The update did...the 1400by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Output to DVCProHD - 13 years agoWhat deck? Are you using the DVCPRO HD 1080i60 Easy Setup?by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Beauty Box - 13 years agoI have both, but only use the FAST version now. It's as good, but 2-3 times faster.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: 5D MK2 and t2i (550d) into FCP... where is that link? - 13 years agoLog and Transfer doesn't work with the 550...T2i...without a hack. Found here:by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: fundamental question re: media manager - 13 years agoIt will COPY the media, and only use the portions used in the sequence, with handles you tell it. The original files are left alone.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Beauty Box - 13 years agoI use FAST EMA and DIGITAL COVERUP from sheffieldsoftworks.com. They do as good, are cheaper, and render a WHOLE LOT faster. A 15 second shot will take 20-30 min with BeautyBox. With Fast EMA...like 4 minutes. And when you have a lot of interviews to fix, that's time savings!by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: uncompressed 4:4:4 codecs - 13 years agoDOn't know about those codecs. As for other codecs, I don't think you can install others and have FCP work fine with them. DNxHD, when installed, allows for editing of DNxHD Qt files, but no external video via capture cards, and no RT effects. Exporting can give odd results too. FCP is designed to be used with FCP codecs.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Time code in Log and Transfer - 13 years agoThe NXCAM footage is only fully compatible with FCP 7. The format that camera employs is an offshoot of AVCHD...slightly different than normal. I had a TON of issues with that format until I updated to FCP 7.0.3. Even 7.0.1 had issues. ClipWrap2 solved those issues before FCP 7.0.3 did...try that.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: uncompressed 4:4:4 codecs - 13 years agoDon't think there is such a thing. At least not in FCP. The only 4444 codecs I know of are Animation and ProRes 4444. Animation isn't a playable codec in FCP, and ProRes 4444 is Compressed...but compressed well. The UNCOMPRESSED options in FCP are 4:2:2. What do you need this for? (Please don't say for your Canon 5D footage...)by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: OT: Working in Premiere - this is hilarious... - 13 years agoIt is.
