OT: Migration Assistant - Words of Wisdom? - 16 years agoI'm about ready to transfer all my programs/settings from my older iMac to new iMac. I planning on using the Migration Assistant to move everything, particularly FCP, etc., to the new iMac (4gb ram, 1TB internal HD). I couldn't resist. It looked so darned cool!! Besides, the sales clerk told me I had to buy it after I licked the screen and drooled on the keyboard...... Any warnings or words oby CyWar - Café LA Re: MacJanitor and Leopard - 16 years agoThanks, Scott I've been running the most current version of MacJanitor and I do the daily when I first start my iMac (before I do anything else). I was just wondering about it. I can see your point: it deals with the Unix operating system, not the OS.xx running on top of it.by CyWar - Café LA Re: Phony FireWire event - 16 years agoPersonally, I use the tinfoil as a little hat I wear...... you never know who's listening to your thoughts... Maybe the "American Community Survey" group?...by CyWar - Café LA MacJanitor and Leopard - 16 years agoAny concerns about using the current release of MacJanitor on Mac's running Leopard? I've been running it regularly using the "Daily" function, but am just wonder if it fully understands Leopard (or does that really not matter).by CyWar - Café LA Re: Scratch Disk Setup Question - 16 years agoTo Jude: Thanks for your suggestions. I ran 2 tests today of a 10 minute video. 1 with the 500GB drive directly attached via firewire 800 and 1 with the 500GB daisy-chained off the 1TB drive (attached directly to the FW800 port). My Auto Save Vault is on my boot drive. All my media files are on the 500GB drive, along with the project file (neat for ez backup). I did not notice any apprecby CyWar - Café LA Re: Scratch Disk Setup Question - 16 years agoThank you all for your comments. This new setup appears to perform better (faster) than my previous setup. All the media I'll be using for any project will all be on the 500GB drive. I'll keep the project files on my boot drive and also have set the Auto Save Vault to the boot drive. I've currently got about 150GB left on it from the original 250GB. I'll give it a good test sometime later thisby CyWar - Café LA Re: Scratch Disk Setup Question - 16 years agoThank you so much, Scott, for your suggestion. I just tried an small experiment with just the 500GB drive attached (not daisy-chained) and it appears that the render and export process is much faster. Since I don't work on FCP projects all the time, this seems the most viable solution. One other question: Is it OK to keep the FCP project file on the same drive as the scratch disk and media.by CyWar - Café LA Re: Scratch Disk Setup Question - 16 years agoScott Taylor Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- "You could keep the 1TB out of the chain while editing, only hooking it up for archiving, if it concerns you. Are you referring to just the original clips/footage I am editing or are you also considering all the render files, etc., on the scratch disk as "media"? The 500GB drive is exclusively used as my scratch disk only. Is the fact that it is daisy-chained to the 1TB drive problematic? Does this hold true for FCP? I have a 1TB G-RAID on my iMac FW800 port and then have a 500GB G-RAID daisy-chained to the 1TB drive. I use the 500GB strictly as the scratch disk for FCP and the 1TB as location for stored clips. I am using a Sony HD-SR1 to capture HD footage which I log and transfer via FCP from the camera to ProRes422 1920x1080 30p 48 kHz. I just put a splitter on my TV cable, put one end into the EyeTV unit, stuck in a USB port in the back of my iMac and I have channels 2 through 99 that I can view and RECORD! Then I use it to output the recorded video into the format I want. I believe it also has a way of hooking to your VCR and/or DVD player and can also handle HiDef (apparently from a HiDef anteby CyWar - Café LA Re: OT - soft rant... new chicklet keyboard - a few days forward - 16 years agoI dumped the Apple keyboard and "mighty mouse" and installed a LogiTech S350 Laser Wireless keyboard with 2-button mouse (able to right-click without darned Control Key+click of the Mighty M). Am much happier with this keyboard, the feel and touch of it. Just my humble opinion, of course.by CyWar - Café LA Re: Got Leopard? Post your problems/joys/thoughts here - 16 years agoInstalled Leopard last night; had absolutely no install problems (took less than an hour). So far everything seems to working as should be. My projects are minimal, so storage is not a problem. After Leopard was installed, I turned on TimeMachine and backed up my entire 250GB internal system disk (had about 82GB and took about 45 minutes) to the G-Raid external on FireWire 400. Thanks goodnessby CyWar - Café LA Re: Who is jumping into leapord?? - 16 years agoApple just sent me an email telling me my upgrade was shipped today. If the Gods really like me, FedEx may deliver it tomorrow at my office. Then I can spend a happy weekend upgrading (and, hopefully, not upchucking!). If all goes well, will report. If all goes wrong, I'll report anyway...by CyWar - Café LA Re: Importing from hard drive type camera - 17 years agoHope this helps. I have a Sony HDR-SR1 30GB hard drive. If you plug the USB cable from the camera to the Mac, you should get a drive called "No Name" on your desktop. You can open that and drag the MPEG files directly to the desktop. The audio is buried in thte "transport stream". I use MPEG Streamclip to convert to a .mov file with audio which I can then import into FCP. Thisby CyWar - Café LA Re: Migration to new iMac - 17 years agoThanks all. Will try the "Migration Assistant" first. If that dosen't work correctly, I'll restore the new iMac to its original condition and then manually copy/move my files and reinstall all the applications.by CyWar - Café LA Migration to new iMac - 17 years agoCouldn't resist. Bought the new iMac, 4GB RAM, 1TB harddrive, etc., etc. Apple's home office must love me! (Well, at least my credit card!) Am wondering if the "Migration Assistant" will move my current install of Final Cut Pro Studio to the new iMac or will I need to reinstall from the program disks? Somehow something changed the audio drivers to another setting for a driver I don't have. Sometimes Windows Update makes odd changes to my configuration. Oy! I think I need an upgrade for my brain instead..... Thanks everyone.by CyWar - Café LA Re: Quicktime clip audio on Mac but not on PC - 17 years agoOK everyone, now I know I'm an idiot.....!!! Was just reading some other post about a client that was driving them nuts, claiming there was no audio on any of the PC's in her office when playing the DVD.
