Re: It's that time of year -- firewire drive dies in middle of project! - 14 years agoThanks, Derek. I think you're right. It's letting me copy it, and I'm doing it in chunks. So far so good. At first the drive wasn't showing up at all, so I figured it was toast. But for the moment it's back. Ain't going to bed until I move, or attempt to move, the important stuff from it. I did get an error with one of the files and it stopped copying. Can't check out "hardware" for that drive, it doesn't come up as an option. But It did let me rebuild he directories and the files checked out okay. So I am in the midst of moving about 120 gigs from there over to another drive, and will move more stuff if that's successful. I am in the process of recapturing footage for a drive that died tonight... What is the biggest, baddest, most ass-kicking drive I can get for video editing? I want something fast, dependable and exterior. Last year on another project with a big deadline, I had a firewire die on me, and I spent most of the weekend recapturing and synching everything up. It's happened againby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: one more piece of info - 15 years agoYou wrote: >"capture audio to separate files" (it's in capture settings, under "scratch disk" Nope, still only captures Channel 1. Something definitely funky with FCP here. Not the cameras. It will NOT capture Mono 2, and won't capture when I click "stereo." I put the tape in another camera, can hear left/right playing in speakers just fine. 2. Tried capturing that tape in the other camera, same thing -- only captures Mono (a1) -- the left channel. No right channel captured, though I can hear right channel played back in right speaker while capturing. 3. Yes. That is, I hear Mic 1 through the left speaker, and Mic 2 through the right speaker. But if I turn off Channel 1 (and have Channel 2 on), I hear nothing. Nada, even though on my camera I can see that channel 2 has sound on it.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: audio capture problem - 15 years agoYes, I can hear both tracks through my speakers when playing back, and I can see on the camera (where I can also hear them) that they are both recorded and contain different sound. Regarding the mics, I had one that was recording the general room and one that was being worn by a person talking. I can't get that right channel which has their voice on it, though it's there on the tape. I am capturing HDV via firewire and I have it set to capture both left and right tracks, mono, but I only get the A1 Mono track. I shot with 2 mics and so I need both tracks, but can't get it to work. I trashed preferences, didn't help. Any suggestions of what to try to fix this problem? Thanks.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Multiclip problem - 15 years agoThanks. I seem to have gotten this working. Appreciate your help.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Multiclip problem - 15 years agoI put several multiclips into timelines in order to do edits. Now when I go back to edit, the left viewer area shows all three camera angles, but when I start to play, it only shows one angle. I have clicked "open" on the Canvas, so I'm not understanding why it's not showing all three angles in the viewer when I play, and not allowing me to make edits. Always appreciate the swift help here.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Multiclip question - 15 years agoYes, I'm using the numerical keypad. So I have to hold down Apple at the same time? Isn't there a way to do this where I'm just hitting the # and don't have to hold down anything? Thanks.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Multiclip question - 15 years agoI use multiclip once a year, which is just enough time to forget everything about it, and to have to re-learn it. The problem I'm having and can't find the answer to in the book: I think I have it all set up right, but when I play the multiclip and click between angles, I see it's making the cuts and putting markers on the timeline, but when I stop, the markers disappear and no actual cuts hby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Thanks to all! - 15 years agoWant to thank everyone for all the great advice and help here (and sorry if I inadvertantly spawned a drive flame war!). As I said, I ended up recapturing the reels using "capture now" (last time I'll use that...) and then although the length of the recaptures wasn't identical, when I reconnected the media to the offline ones I'd lost, everything was in perfect synch, so other thanby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 15 years ago> when I do a capture now, it comes to the end of the reel, the deck stops, but FCP is frozen, > with the last frame there and it says it's still capturing QuoteDerekAie-ie-ie. You're not supposed to capture the last second or two of tape, either. That's why there's also such a thing called "post-roll". After you're nearing the end of a tape, you're supposed to record some colby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 15 years agoThanks again to all who've helped out. I am having an issue using Capture Now on the same reels. I decided just to do that and try some of the suggestions I've gotten for using that, or else just do a manual re-do and then have to move forward and do the rest of the show. The problem is when I do a capture now, it comes to the end of the reel, the deck stops, but FCP is frozen, with the lasby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 15 years ago> Jeff - try using media manager to recapture just the clips you've used. Thanks, Jude. Trying to figure out how to do that now... I only see the full capture of the reel in the browser, not the individual clips in the timeline. Guess I need to spend some time with the manual tonight.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 15 years agoThanks, Jude. None of the takes I'm using in the show are at or near the head of the tape. If there were a way just to capture the clips in my timeline and get those, that would be helpful. I guess my problem is that I did a "capture now" for the full tapes, and even though my selected takes are nowhere near the head of the tape, I can't recapture because it wants 5 seconds of pre-rollby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 15 years agoMore lessons learned (the hard way). Thanks, Derek. So even using capture now again, there's no way to automate any of this or to try to substitute the new clip into the old, right?by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoHey Derek: One more question. When I originally captured these reels, I just started it running and hit "capture now." So the clip started just a few seconds into the reel. When I got back on some of these to recapture, there doesnt' seem to be enough pre-roll that the system wants. It rolls it back before 0:00:00 and then stalls, never rolls to start recapturing. Any suggestionby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoThanks for the lesson in terminology, Derek. I'm recapturing the reels as I write, about 10 hours to go. I think the meltdown to prevent will be to have a raid backup system for my footage, in the form of a few G-raid 1TB drives. Otherwise, I'm sticking to what works best -- shoot, edit, cash the check. Cheers and thanks again for your help.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoAha! Okay, you wrote: QuotederekmokYou may be doing something wrong. You should not be redoing the logging; you should just be capturing using the same offline clips you were using for the edit. That way you will be able to reconnect the edits to the media file, which would be identical to the one you had initially used to create the edit. So I should NOT just recapture the files? How do Iby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoThe drive seems to be totally dead now, doesn't come up at all. I was able to move smaller files from it, slowly, but anything big, I got an error message that it had a problem, and stopped. Shows a problem with the file after about a gig of transfer, which took a half hour. You said that recapture alone may not do the trick. Why no? Won't I be able to somehow import the recaptured footageby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Re: Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoThanks for the quick response. To answer your questions: Yes, I have a copy of the project file, after disconnecting the problem drive, it shows the media is offline. So I guess I can recapture the 11 hours, giving the same file names, and then when I open the project I simply click "reconnect" and connect to the reels in the new location, and the show comes back online? No, theby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Drive went south, now wha -- help! - 16 years agoStarted editing a few days ago, the 1TB external firewire maxtor seems to have bitten the dust. I have a copy of the show on another drive, but it references the footage, which is on the Maxtor. Is there a way I can re-capture the footage and have it magically appear in the timeline, since I have the timeline? Any suggestions, short of just starting back from scratch? The maxtor externalby Jeff Nelson - Café LA Slideshow problem with dissolves - 16 years agoI created a slideshow, added dissolves/fade downs/ups between shots. Looked fine, burned to DVD, when I play on a DVD player, there is a weird artifact at the end of each dissolve, it's like the picture fades up, then freezes with some slight distortion, then is smooth again as a still, fades down, next one fades up, then freezes with some weird distortion for a sec, then is okay. Any thoughts?by Jeff Nelson - DVD Studio Pro Re: Backup suggestions? What do people use? - 16 years agoThanks. What kind of esata raid would you recommend? What's the pricing like here? I buy the raid setup, then the drives to swap out? Links to recommended systems? Thanks.by Jeff Nelson - Café LA Backup suggestions? What do people use? - 16 years agoI have backup in place for documents, preferences and so forth, even have the family photos backed up. But what do people do when it comes to backing up projects and footage? Do most folks do that? I may have up to a terrabyte or two of footage on my system at any time, projects I'm working on, stuff I've captured to work on later. Does anyone actually back up all their footage in use?
