Hey all, I've been cutting a few projects in Premiere Pro lately (very impressed BTW) and I'd still like to do my color correction in COLOR, so I'm trying to go PPro>FCP7>Color. The FCP XML export function from PPro works really well, but since I'm cutting native Canon 7D files in PPro I wind up with a sequence full of H.264 clips in FCP and a lot of angry, red render bars. In the middle of editing a project in Premiere Pro CS6, and I can't figure out how to invoke the "+" and "-" commands for moving clips on the timeline on my laptop keyboard. On my desktop it's no problem because I have a full-sized keyboard with dedicated plus and minus keys; on the Macbook Pro, holding down Shift and clicking "=" or clicking "-" has no effby John K - Adobe Premiere Pro CC

FWIW, I pulled the trigger and it's been pretty smooth sailing. I've downloaded all of the Production apps and I'm using PPro on a couple projects now, not as hard to learn as I feared. I've already upgraded to the new Acrobat Pro, so having access to the latest versions is a really nice perk. The installer is a click away in my Dock and I haven't found myself missing the rigamarole of installingby John K - Adobe Premiere Pro CC

Thanks Kevin. Are you hip to how various apps handle backwards compatibility? I know apps like Photoshop aren't usually a problem, but how hard is it to open Premiere or AE files in previous versions? Hey all, With the promotional pricing about to expire, I'm on the fence about upgrading to Adobe Cloud to get CS6 (I'm still on CS5). Pricing wise it makes good sense - for the next two years, the cost of the cloud would be less than the upgrade for my Master Collection ($1,049) so I'd be saving a few bucks and won't have to skip any of the .5 releases or even CS7 if it's out during that perioby John K - Adobe Premiere Pro CC

Hey all, I realize this may not be a strictly FCP-related question but I'm hoping some of the tech-gurus here can chime in and point the way. I'm in post on my feature film (which was shot Super 16) and my visual effects house is working on several effect shots for me. They were originally provided as 2K DPX files from the lab, which were then worked on in Nuke and then output as ProRes 4444 Hby John K - Café LA

Those of you using Toast, have you had stuttering issues on playback in certain players? My editor has been burning BR discs for approval on my feature, and though they played well in his machine (a Samsung?) they did not look great on my Playstation 3. Normally the PS3 is rock solid on playback of commercial discs, but the ones burned in Toast had a stuttering frame rate that was extremely irritby John K - Café LA

Casey, I can't really add much more to the expert opinions here, these guys all know their stuff. I just to want to reiterate though, since I'm also a Canon HDSLR shooter (7D) that the "look" you're going for is probably 24p (actually 23.98 or 23.976 fps, but I'll say 24p for now), which has a filmic quality that mimics the frame rate that actual film is shot and projected at (a truby John K - Café LA

Hi Jude, I doubt there can ever be a TRUE reference for web-only work, but I at least try to start from the best possible setup. Good monitor with decent specs, calibrated with a colorimeter and set to the same gamma settings as the client. Now that Macs have finally switched over to 2.2 I'm hoping that there will be some amount of parity across the various PCs and monitors, but yeah there areby John K - Café LA

Are you saying that you've hooked up the external HD monitor to your Mac Pro's graphics card (the second port)? And you're seeing a duplicate image of your FCP interface (essentially, your Macs main screen)? If that's the case, I think you have mirroring turned on. Go to your System Preferences>Displays and uncheck the mirroring option. Your second monitor should now have it's own image onby John K - Café LA

Delivering some color-critical work for the web this week, and the whole H.264/QT7/QTX gamma bug is really biting me in the ass. It doesn't help that my client is on PC and I don't have an easy way of knowing what they're seeing when they view these (plus they're getting re-encoded to Flash on the back end). I've gone back through previous posts and I've seen the complaints, just wondering if theby John K - Café LA

In terms of DVDSP, I've always used Compressor to make my MPEG-2s and AC3 files. I know DVDSP will compress a Quicktime file internally but I prefer bringing in files ready to go so the actual burn time is relatively short. FCPX will allow you to export to DVD but can it just export to MPEG-2+AC3 files without burning a disc? Also, don't forget that Compressor will allow you to batch files, anby John K - Café LA - X

I was there; great seminar from Larry, good to hear his honest opinion on the software. There are some really cool features in X and great improvements in speed and productivity. That's a good point about adding a new license, I forgot that Apple was no longer selling the FCS3 boxes anymore; here's hoping that resellers don't start hoarding the remaining copies and selling them at outrageous prices (glad I upgraded when I did instead of waiting it out for X). I see a lot of folks already talking about moving on, can't tell if it's a matter of spite and disappointment or legitimate concerns over the future of the software. I was shocked to see Walter Bascardi, a long-time FCP evangelist, dump it publicly over on the Cow. But... is there any major compelling reason to quit FCP right now? Is it in the dialogue box that appears when you create a new project? I saw that in a screencast earlier today. Still, it sounds like you can't share Project files between editors as easily as before; there's no way to reconnect media and even if you share the same media folder the project files doesn't retain the same folder/organization structure.by John K - Café LA - X
