Re: Best Codec for Windows? - 17 years agoI will second Flip4mac. Really great software, worth the money. No complaints from my Windows-based clients. JKby John K - Café LA Re: "Mosquito Noise"/ still image problems in timeline- I've tried everything - 17 years agoWhat QT format are you exporting to? Have you tried compressing it for viewing it on the web or a non-interlaced format for viewing on the computer, like Mpeg-4 or Sorensen? If you're just making a DV QT file it will still look as bad as it did in the FCP Canvas.by John K - Café LA Re: still frame DVD - 17 years agoWhy don't you just drop the still image in to DVDSP as the background menu image? If there are no effects on the logo (lens flare, motion, etc.) and it's just sitting there then forget the step of making it a movie file first. Set the menu duration to maximum; I don't think you would even see a glitch at the looping point . JKby John K - Café LA Re: Ripping Google Video footage? - 17 years agoSnapz Pro X may work for you. You can capture any window of moving footage on your screen; but processing time is long and intensive, and you may not get the frame rate you want. JKby John K - Café LA Re: FCP 5 timeline settings & HVX 200 - 17 years agoThere are plug-ins for FCP that allow your over- or under-cranked to play at their true speed, so you do not need to apply a speed change. Also, I wouldn't edit 720p from a FW400 drive, it's bound to give you problems. Do a search for that camera in this forum; there were some posts after the last meeting (where they spoke abou the camera) and somebody had listed a good article that covered theby John K - Café LA Re: macbook pro/FW800 - 17 years agoThat setup was possible on the previous Powerbooks, and yes you need a separate FW 800 PC card. If you're working in HD or Uncompressed off a G-Raid then wait for that new card to come out. But for DV, we've been able to daisy chain a FW drive and a camera/deck off the single FW400 port on a 1.6ghz Powerbook with no capturing problems (YMMV).by John K - Café LA Re: OT: Leasing a new Mac - 17 years agoI suppose it makes sense for medium/large businesses, if they have to buy lots of machines and are constantly upgrading to new equipment. But for a small shop I suppose it's better just to buy them outright -- it's not like they don't pay for themselves, eh? JKby John K - Café LA Re: macbook pro - 17 years agoInteresting. Apple has been pretty vague about what the "minimum reqs" are, most of us assumed that meant none of the apps would run at all. Makes sense though that Motion would be off the table with the Minis graohics card. I stand corrected.by John K - Café LA Re: Sync - 17 years agoI'm not familiar with BWF at all, but did you see the article on lafcpug's home page?by John K - Café LA OT: Leasing a new Mac - 17 years agoJust got the $0 interest offer from Apple for leasing a new Mac. 2-year lease with option to upgrade after 1 year. Just wondering if any of you are leasing your G5s right now and/or what you guys think of leasing versus owning. I'm generally not a fan of leasing; I own my car outright and all my gear so far, but I have to say I'm a lot pickier about my computers than what I drive! I'm not planninby John K - Café LA Re: macbook pro - 17 years agoThe Mac Book Pro has had other problems though, including high heat, fan noise and screen issues. Apple is aware of these and hopefully the latest models have corrected some of the issues. Also, you may be thinking of the Intel Mac Mini which does NOT run FCS at all. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Update to 10.4 - 17 years agoJust curious, are a lot of you running 10.4.5 and QT 7.04? There seemed to be a few problems with the lastest updates so I've stayed at 10.4.3 and 7.03 for awhile. But I'm between projects now and I'd like to upgrade -- if they're stable.by John K - Café LA Re: I-tunes import to FCP - 18 years agoSomething that we did on our last job (where we needed a lot of popular music to use for quickie corporate videos) was to use an app called Audio Hijack. It can capture the sound output from any application on your machine; just set it up to hijack iTunes and hit Record, then play your purchased song. You can set the recording to default to a 48khz AIFF file. You have to listen to the whole songby John K - Café LA Re: capture problem - 18 years agoHave you tried setting your device control to "non-controllable device" and using Capture Now? As long as your camera is passing through the video from the VCR, you should be able to see it in FCP this way.by John K - Café LA Re: universal - schmuniversal??? - 18 years agoI've been wondering when the Intel Powermacs would come out, since Apple already announced the UB version of FCP Suite. Maybe they're just trying to get UB versions of all their software out the door with no relation to hardware sales; but then again, would they release FCP 6 at NAB with nothing to run it on but MacBooks, iMacs and Minis? In any case, I'm waiting to see what's announced and theby John K - Café LA Re: EMERGENCY!! On location, forgot to bring filter - 18 years agoThere was another filter I forgot, one from the 55mm set. FCP really hated that it was missing, would not let me render or export (big red offline 'Missing Plug-in' message). But it wasn't really needed so I ditched it. FCP was flakey without the CGM Film LE installed, but I did get a preview of the final effect...by John K - Café LA Re: EMERGENCY!! On location, forgot to bring filter - 18 years agoHey all, Does anyone have a copy of that free plug-in from the FCP 3 upgrade, CGM Film LE? I'm on the road with a project that I used the filter on, FORGOT to load the filter into my laptop FCP. The job won't render. HELP, Please! I only have 2 hours til it plays! (7PM EST, it's 5PM now) If you have it, please email it to lefty1at mac.com. Do you just have the standard version?by John K - Café LA Re: My own spoof news - 18 years agoIf you have After Effects, here is a good tutorial for making a "glass" globe with a rotating logo, just like on the news:by John K - Café LA Re: importing mp3's - 18 years agoJust came off a large corporate presentation project, one of our editors used mp3s in his final output. The clicking and popping from the compression was very audible ? played back through huge speakers in a big room full of our clients. SO not cool. Don't ever use MP3s in the final output.by John K - Café LA Re: OT: Upgrade to Final Cut Studio for $99.00 - 18 years agoWait a sec... So Final Cut Studio is the same as the old Production Suite ? same box but much lower price, and the apps are no longer available separately. And the upgrade to Studio from FCP ? that I just paid $618 for right before Xmas ? is now only $199??? Apple has some hush-hush return policy for when you order something right before they upgrade or price drop, right? Would that applby John K - Café LA Re: need 4 digibetas captured to my HD-$ - 18 years agoI've used Alpha Dogs in Burbank for Digibeta before; it's DIY unless you want to pay extra $$ for a tech to capture it so you don't have to be there.by John K - Café LA OT: what have you done with the older versions? - 18 years agoJust upgraded to FCP Suite, trying to clear some room for that black suitcase on the shelf... Just curious, what have you all done with previous versions? Those boxes take up a lot of space and it seems silly to keep them around. But also a waste to chuck out all that material, no? I'll keep the previous version as a backup but what to do with 3.0? eBay? Recycle? Doorstop?by John K - Café LA Re: older superdrives and burning speeds - 18 years agoCheck to see if your drive is listed; they may have info on patches or flashes to upgrade the drive. BTW, the Pioneer 16x Superdrives (109 model or better) are really cheap now and they work fine in the older G4s, at least the Quicksilvers on up. I dropped one in my dual 1ghz and used the Patchburn utility to get the drive to work under Panther (I think it's native under Tiger). JKby John K - Café LA PBook drive OK for DV edit? - 18 years agoTo any of you Powerbook editors... I'm about to go on the road with a rented PBook 15" (1.5 ghz, I hope) that I'll load up with FCPHD and a DV project that I'm working on (from my G4 tower). Problem is my travel FW drive is only 4200rpm so if I load the clips on it I'll probably get dropped frames up the waz. Have any of you had any luck with just using the boot drive to hold all of your DVby John K - Café LA |
