Re: Recreate digital TV noise? - 13 years agoThanks Andy, that may be close to what I need; will have to download the trial to see if it works. Too bad it's only included in the whole suite ($300)by John K - Café LA Re: Final Cut Pro Updating Old Sequences on it's own. - 13 years agoWeird. Are either of the other machines working on the same FCP project file that's on the main Mac?by John K - Café LA Recreate digital TV noise? - 13 years agoWorking with a client on a music video project and they want to incorporate the kind of digital blips, hits and hiccups you see sometimes on digital cable or satellite. Anyone know of any plugins that can replicate that, either for FCP/Motion or AE? I could create the stuff manually but I'd rather save time if there's something already available. At work I back up all my internal drives to an eSATA RAID via Time Machine, as well as a chunk of the files on my main RAID (graphics, Motion files, audio -- anything that's not captured media). At home I have a Tiby John K - Café LA Re: Creating a still image from video in FCP - 13 years agoI don't think there's space here to delve into the specifics of DPI and what it means to go from video to print, but suffice it to say that video stills -- even ones pulled from HD -- will never equal the quality of a nice large photograph (whether film or a high-megapixel image). In print production we always went by the rule that all of our images had to be 300 dpi (sometimes 400, depends onby John K - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 13 years agoI gotta say, the MXO2 line is looking pretty good. It mirrors some of the best features of the competitors, plus it has the portability option. I get why the K3 is important to bigger shops who need 2K but I don't think I would be doing enough of that kind of work to justify it. Plus, the littl features like RCA I/O really make a difference in smaller setups like mine... JKby John K - Café LA Re: exporting file with alpha from chroma-key in FCP? - 13 years agoHey strypes, doesn't the new ProRes 4444 support an alpha too? Supposedly less overhead than the old Animation codec I thought... JKby John K - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 13 years agoThanks Peter! That's a great article, lots of info. JKby John K - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 13 years agoThanks all, great comments so far. OK, I'll take a stab at the specs of what I think I need and maybe you guys can steer me towards a couple options: The formats I've been editing in, and will probably continue to edit in are DV, DVCProHD, XDCAM EX. I'll be in the market for a new I/O device next year and would love a good soup to nuts comparison (if it exists). JKby John K - Café LA Re: Jagged red text in web video, any solutions? - 13 years agoThanks man. I actually found a shade of red that holds together after compression; not as bright as I would like (a little on the pink side) but at least it doesn't fall apart. Ugggh, what a pain. JKby John K - Motion Re: Client review on web site - 13 years agoQuotestrypesYou can always write a simple blank/black HTML page with nothing but the links to the videos. Sure could, but again that's more maintenance; would have to manually update the html every time a new file was placed in the folder. And thanks for the head's up on Safari breaking QT download -- I thought something weird was going on. I'm certainly able to upload Quicktime files now, the problem I have is logistics. I have to copy and paste the urls of those QT files into emails, which is fine for 1-offs but when I have multiple cuts or edits I'd like to just tell them to "look in your folder" andby John K - Café LA Client review on web site - 13 years agoHey all, I'd like to find a more streamlined way to get video clips to my clients, both for review as well as just downloading files. I do have a password-protected area on my site (so that each client has their own folder) but when they log in it's just a bare bones /index page. A LOT of people have no idea what to do on an /index page, as it's not intuitive to click on a video file to view iby John K - Café LA Jagged red text in web video, any solutions? - 13 years agoI know this situation has come up before (as in ) where red-colored text looks jagged in FCP and when compressed for the web. Wondering if anyone has a solution for this? I know that you need to look at text on a broadcast monitor -- however, in my case I'm producing content solely for the web and encoding to H.264 and Flash. Codec, bitrate, etc. 2) Make a new setting in Compressor with those specs 3) Export a SCQT from Final Cut Pro and drop into Compressor; use the setting you madby John K - Café LA Re: Apple New Releases - 13 years agoStill rocking a 15" 2.8 MBPro with removable battery and EC slot, last one they made in this config. This is how page-layout programs like InDesign and Quark work too, and it's very powerful. If I decide down the road that say, all the sub-heads in an article need to be 1-point larger in type size or a new font then I just change the style sheet and it updates all the text boxes in the document that have that style applied. I'm watching the processors work while I render a big project , and they're all over the place. When I send a file through Compressor and my Virtual Cluster the core performance is pegged close to 100%. Rather than imrove them, Apple has thrown in other apps or plugins (Livetype, Motion, Boris) that force us to round-trip just to get the right typeface. I might do my titles in those others apps, or even Photoshop+AE, but it's so frustrating that I can't even make a quick lower-third in FCP with say, Franklin Gothic - Medium. Craigslist may still be his best bet though; I haven't seen any consumer HDV cams at all in stores. Everything at that price point has moved to solid state storage. JKby John K - Café LA Re: HD DVD Camcorder/What to BUY - 13 years agoThere are HDV decks out there, that's probably the "Sony tape transfer" thing you mentioned. Expensive. Search a place like the B+H website for HDV camcorders to check the pricing: HDV Camcorders on B+H. Under $500? More like $800. So it might be cheaper to have someone else do it. $50/hour is actually a pretty good rate. That's the file that would update when you make changes in Motion. Otherwise, just drag your Motion project into your browser and add it to the timeline. However.
